You can use a spare PC to keep a YouTube live stream running by connecting an encoder to YouTube Live Control Room, choosing settings the computer and internet connection can sustain, and preventing the machine from sleeping or losing power. YouTube handles the live ingest; your PC, encoder, network, and power supply must keep working for the broadcast to stay online.
Before you start: confirm the channel is eligible
Verify the YouTube channel and make sure it has no live-streaming restrictions from the preceding 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned broadcast. Its general eligibility guidance sets a minimum age of 16 for live streaming. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Set up the broadcast in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room.
- Create a new stream or schedule one. Encoder streaming is suitable for broadcasts using screen capture, overlays, external audio or video equipment, and other production elements. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup steps.
- In the stream’s settings, locate the stream URL and stream key. The key links your encoder to the broadcast; treat it like a password. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room before streaming again. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guide.
Install an encoder and connect the spare PC
Install an encoder on the spare PC, or connect a standalone hardware encoder if that is your chosen setup. In the encoder, enter the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Select an RTMPS destination or preset when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery; its RTMPS instructions explain how to find the secure ingest address.
Never publish a screenshot or recording that reveals the stream key. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. If the key might have been shared, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement.

Choose video and audio settings the PC can sustain
Use the lowest resolution and frame rate that meet the broadcast’s needs and remain stable on both the computer and its upload connection. The figures below are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates, not a guarantee that a variable home connection can deliver them reliably. YouTube’s settings page, accessed in 2026, lists these 1080p recommendations:

YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video. Its current guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and no more than 4 seconds between keyframes. For stereo audio, it lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 kbps; for SDR video, it recommends Rec. 709. Review YouTube’s complete encoder settings and bitrate recommendations for other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs. The page also recommends testing upload speed and choosing a quality your connection can reliably sustain.

Test the complete stream before leaving it unattended
- Run a representative test with audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast. YouTube specifically recommends testing both before going live.
- Check the Live Control Room preview for picture, sound, and error messages.
- Start the stream and verify playback on its YouTube watch page. Check stream-health indicators and messages in Live Control Room.
- If you are recording a local archive, confirm that the file continues to grow during the test.
- Test the spare PC’s actual unattended behavior: confirm it does not sleep, stays connected after a restart, and behaves as intended after updates or a power interruption.
YouTube’s live-streaming tips cover preflight checks, playback verification, and monitoring. They do not specify operating-system sleep settings or how to recover a particular PC after a crash or power cut; those depend on your hardware and operating system.
Keep the spare PC and connection running
A continuous stream depends on more than encoder settings. Configure the computer for unattended operation using the controls available for its operating system and model. Set sleep behavior deliberately, check what happens after a restart or power loss, and keep the machine in a ventilated location. These are device-specific precautions, not YouTube requirements; do not assume a setting works until you have tested it on the actual PC.

For a stationary PC, Ethernet is a practical option when available. What matters is a connection that can reliably sustain the chosen bitrate. Test at the PC’s location and monitor stream health rather than relying on a single speed result. A UPS may help prevent a brief power interruption from ending the broadcast, but choose and test one for the computer and networking equipment you intend to keep running; YouTube does not prescribe a capacity.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The stream cannot start: Confirm the channel is verified, eligible, and not restricted from live streaming. If this is the first stream, activation may still be pending for up to 24 hours.
- YouTube receives no signal: Check that the encoder uses the current stream URL and key from Live Control Room and that it is set to stream. If the key was reset, replace the old one in the encoder.
- Video or audio is unstable: Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a level the PC and upload connection can sustain. Check the encoder’s output and YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- The PC stops streaming while unattended: Check sleep and restart behavior, power interruptions, and whether the encoder resumes after a reboot. These settings vary by operating system and hardware; verify recovery with a supervised test.
- The broadcast looks or sounds wrong: Check the Live Control Room preview and watch-page playback, then test again with representative movement and audio before relying on the setup.
Choose a spare-PC setup or cloud streaming
A spare PC keeps the encoder and source under your control, which can suit a live camera, screen capture, overlays, or other production needs. It also means the PC, power, and home connection have to remain available, and you must monitor or arrange recovery. YouTube describes both software and standalone hardware encoders, but its guidance does not benchmark their cost, power use, or reliability.

For prerecorded video, a cloud service is another option if you do not want a home computer to run continuously. YouTube’s encoder page lists Gyre for 24/7 prerecorded streams; that listing does not establish its current pricing or terms.
