You can use a Raspberry Pi and FFmpeg to send a Malayalam camera feed or prerecorded program to YouTube Live, but there is no universal command that works on every Pi. First choose the input, then configure YouTube’s stream URL and secret key, select compatible video and audio settings, and test sustained operation on your specific board. A genuine 24/7 setup also needs a plan for YouTube’s under-12-hour archive behavior and for failures that a running FFmpeg process may not recover from.
Choose what the Raspberry Pi will stream
The right FFmpeg workflow depends on whether the source is live capture or an existing video. In either case, use Malayalam material you have the right to broadcast. Technical setup does not grant music, film, documentary, performance, or other content rights.
Live camera or other capture
For a camera feed, the Pi must capture the camera and any intended audio before FFmpeg can encode or relay them. Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation describes network streaming and FFmpeg/libav-based output options, but the capture device, camera stack, audio source, installed libraries, and FFmpeg build determine the usable input and command. Check the documentation for the specific camera stack and inspect inputs available on your own system rather than assuming a generic camera-device path.
Prerecorded Malayalam program
For a prerecorded program, FFmpeg can read a local media file and send it as a live encoder input. Confirm that the file contains the intended video and audio streams, and decide how it should repeat. A file loop is not necessarily seamless, and a process that is reading a file does not automatically handle every input, network, or YouTube failure.

Encode or relay
If the source is already encoded in a format and settings YouTube accepts, a stream-copy or relay workflow may avoid encoding it again. That depends on compatibility between the input streams and the output path. If the Pi must encode, its capacity depends on the board, source, resolution, frame rate, filters, codecs, and workload. Raspberry Pi’s H.264 performance note discusses Pi 5-series software encoding and includes a Pi 4 hardware-encoding comparison; it does not establish that every Pi can sustain every quality setting. Measure the chosen board under the real workload before relying on it.
Get YouTube’s ingest details and protect the stream key
- Create or schedule the live stream: In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance recommends configuring at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes beforehand so there is time to check the preview.
- Copy the ingest URL and key: Use the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Prefer the RTMPS URL when it is offered and supported by your encoder; YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. The stream key acts as a password and address for the stream. Keep it out of articles, screenshots, public repositories, and logs you share. Reset it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Keep the key out of the command you share: Supply your own current URL and key to FFmpeg locally. Do not paste a working key into a tutorial, shared script, or public support request.

Match FFmpeg output to YouTube’s requirements
YouTube’s published encoder guidance lists H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval recommendation, with four seconds as the maximum. Its recommended bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate. Select the row for the output you actually intend to send; the examples below are platform recommendations, not guarantees of picture quality or network capacity.

These figures are from YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance. That page includes additional resolution and frame-rate combinations. Your available upload capacity must sustain the selected stream with headroom; test from the actual network connection, rather than treating the recommended bitrate as proof that the connection or Pi can handle it. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream for viewers, so the encoder’s incoming settings are not a promise that each viewer will receive an identical rendition.

Check which encoders your installed FFmpeg build supports and which inputs your capture hardware exposes. Explicitly map the intended video and audio streams; verify that audio exists if the command expects it. Pixel format, frame rate, codec availability, and RTMPS support can all differ between installations. FFmpeg’s documentation is the reference for options supported by the installed build. Avoid copying a command built for a different Pi, camera, or FFmpeg installation without checking those assumptions.
Test a working setup before treating it as 24/7
- Run a short private or unlisted test: Start FFmpeg with the correct input and YouTube ingest details. Watch FFmpeg’s output for input, encoding, and connection errors.
- Check YouTube’s preview: Confirm that both picture and sound arrive in Live Control Room before making the stream public. Verify the result on the devices and connection types your intended viewers use.
- Check sustained load and upload headroom: Observe the Pi during the actual intended resolution, frame rate, encoding, filters, and audio workload. A brief successful test does not prove sustained performance. Check for dropped frames, overheating, power or storage issues, and network instability.
- Plan sessions around YouTube’s archive behavior: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume one encoder session will run indefinitely or that a session at or beyond that duration will be archived the same way. Plan and test how you will end and restart sessions, and what viewers will see during any interruption.
- Choose and test recovery: Decide how the installation will respond to an FFmpeg exit, input loss, network interruption, or YouTube disconnect. Service supervision, restart policy, cooling, stable power, wired networking, storage, and remote monitoring are engineering choices to test on the particular installation, not guarantees of unattended recovery.
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before an event, previewing before launch, checking accessibility, and monitoring audio and video quality. For a continuous channel, keep a practical way to monitor stream health and intervene when recovery does not happen as expected.

Troubleshoot common setup failures
