1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo create a custom module for Wowza Streaming Engine, write a Java class that extends ModuleBase, compile and package it as a JAR, place the JAR in the Engine installation’s lib directory, register the class in the target application’s Modules tab, and restart that application. Here, “module” means a Wowza server-side extension—not a Java Platform module declared in module-info.java.
What a Wowza module is—and when to use one
Wowza describes server-side modules as Java classes loaded when a Streaming Engine application starts. A module is configured for an application and can extend or control streaming behavior, including workflows involving HLS, MPEG-DASH, and RTSP/RTP. The documented base class for server-side modules is ModuleBase.
This is different from a Java Platform named module. A Java Platform module declares dependencies and package exports or opens, typically in module-info.java. That mechanism is not part of Wowza’s documented custom-module procedure, which uses a Java class, a JAR, the Engine installation’s lib directory, and application registration.
Check the extension point before coding
A module is a fit when the behavior belongs to a particular application and can be implemented through its server-side APIs. If your requirement is instead tied to broader server lifecycle events or needs an HTTP interface, compare Wowza’s listener and HTTP-provider approaches before choosing a module. The best choice depends on scope and lifecycle, interaction surface, target Engine/API version, dependency packaging, and the operational impact of restarts.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Wowza’s module examples cover tasks such as automatic stream recording, pre-roll looping, stream scheduling, transcoder controls, moving recorded files, authentication integration, stream packetization control, and geographic locking. An example can indicate what is possible, but first check whether a built-in feature or existing utility already meets the requirement.
Create the module class
Start with a Java class that extends ModuleBase. Wowza’s example uses imports from its module, client, AMF, and request APIs and declares a class such as MyModule. It shows both an application-start event method and a custom method:

public class MyModule extends ModuleBase {
public void onAppStart(IApplicationInstance appInstance) {
// Application-start logic goes here.
}
public void doSomething(IClient client, RequestFunction function,
AMFDataList params) {
// Custom method logic goes here.
}
}
This illustrates the shape of a module, not a complete production implementation. onAppStart is an application-start event hook; doSomething is a custom method, not an event that runs automatically merely because it exists. Add only the methods and dependencies the use case requires, and verify method signatures against the API version used by the target Engine installation.
Wowza’s API reference describes ModuleBase as the base class all server-side modules should extend. It also provides support for function parameters, return data, and simplified logging.

Compile and package a JAR
- Use the development route appropriate to your installation. Wowza’s API guidance identifies the Wowza IDE and a Gradle/Docker Compose guide as development options. Check the current documentation and target Engine release for the applicable setup.
- Compile against compatible APIs and dependencies. The documentation does not establish one universal current
javacor Gradle command, dependency coordinate set, or Java-version matrix for every Engine installation. Do not assume a sample build command or Java version will work across releases. - Package the compiled class and required dependencies appropriately. Wowza’s documented deployment route is to package the custom module in a
.jarfile. Confirm how your selected development workflow handles dependencies and that the resulting artifact is compatible with the target server. - Install the JAR. Copy it to
[install-dir]/libin the Wowza Streaming Engine installation.
Register the module with the target application
- Open Wowza Streaming Engine Manager and select the application that should load the module.
- Open that application’s Modules tab and add a module entry.
- Enter a unique module name and, if helpful, an informational description.
- Enter the implementation’s fully qualified Java class name—the package name followed by the class name. This is how Wowza identifies which class to load.
- Save the configuration and restart the application so the newly added module takes effect.
Adding a module to an application while it is running requires an application restart. If you modify an installed module, Wowza’s instructions say to restart Wowza Streaming Engine. Check the relevant application or server logs for startup evidence, then test the module’s intended behavior; configuration alone does not establish that it works at runtime.
Compatibility and troubleshooting
Class does not load or the application fails at startup
- Check that the JAR is in the target installation’s
libdirectory and that the configured class name is fully qualified and spelled correctly. - Confirm the application was restarted after registration. If the JAR changed, follow Wowza’s instruction to restart the Engine service.
- Review logs for class-loading, missing-dependency, or API-signature errors. Recheck the module against the API and Engine release actually installed rather than assuming a sample targets every release.
External web-service calls fail with an SSL handshake error
Wowza warns that custom code calling external web services on Streaming Engine 4.7.8 or later can encounter SSL handshake failures if the required certificates are absent from the Java installation’s trust store. Verify the remote service’s certificate chain and identify the Java installation actually used by Engine before changing trust configuration. Wowza’s documentation describes importing service certificates into that Java installation’s cacerts keystore and restarting the service; do not copy an old example path without adapting it to the current installation.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Build setup or API signatures are unclear
Use Wowza’s API guidance and the documentation for the installed release to verify available development tooling, dependencies, Java compatibility, and signatures. The API introduction was updated July 16, 2026, and the API reference is marked v4.11.0; those labels do not establish that a particular Engine-and-Java pairing has been tested for your project.
