To run a 4K 60fps YouTube Live loop from Ubuntu, create an OBS scene with a looping media source, set the canvas and output to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, configure a supported encoder and YouTube’s bitrate and keyframe settings, then test the feed in YouTube Live Control Room before going public. Your Ubuntu system, graphics drivers, encoder, and upload connection must all sustain the workload; basic OBS compatibility does not guarantee 4K60 performance.
Before you start
You need a YouTube channel eligible to stream, a local video or playlist, OBS Studio installed on Ubuntu, and enough stable upload bandwidth for the encoder settings you choose. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Check YouTube’s current [live encoder settings](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2853702) and OBS Project’s [Ubuntu installation guidance](https://obsproject.com/kb/linux-installation) for your versions and release.
OBS lists an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X window system or Wayland among its Linux system requirements. These are baseline compatibility requirements, not proof that a machine can render and encode 4K at 60 fps. OBS notes that performance depends substantially on encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; use the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then rehearse on the actual system.
Prepare the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or select an encoder stream.
- Copy the stream key and server information, or plan to select YouTube RTMPS directly in OBS if the option is available. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may send a feed to the stream.
- For a scheduled event, YouTube advises preparing the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Preview the incoming feed in Live Control Room before making it public.
Create the looping source in OBS
Loop one video with Media Source
- In OBS, create a scene and add a Media Source.
- Select the local video file and enable Loop in the source properties.
- Fit or scale the source to the canvas. If the source is smaller than 3840Ă—2160, scaling can fill the canvas but cannot create detail that is not in the original.
Loop a playlist with VLC Video
For multiple files, add a VLC Video source and build a playlist. VLC must be installed so its libraries are available. The source’s Loop Playlist option is enabled by default. OBS documents the repeat controls, but they do not guarantee a gapless transition for every file or system. Check the last and first frames and the audio transition, then play a full cycle before relying on the loop.

Set resolution, frame rate, and encoder
- Open Settings → Video. Set both the base (canvas) resolution and output (scaled) resolution to 3840×2160, and set the common FPS value to 60.
- Open Settings → Output and choose Advanced mode if needed to expose encoder controls. Select an encoder actually available and stable in your Ubuntu OBS installation.
- Set rate control to CBR, keyframe interval to 2 seconds, and configure the codec and bitrate using the YouTube recommendations below. Do not set a keyframe interval over four seconds.
- Use progressive scan, square pixels, and Rec. 709 with 8-bit color for SDR. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends AAC or MP3, 128 kbps, and a 44.1 kHz sample rate.
YouTube’s current 2160p at 60 fps guidance, checked October 3, 2026, varies by ingest codec:
| Ingest codec | YouTube-listed minimum bitrate | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s settings guidance, not a promise that OBS exposes every codec on every GPU, driver, or Ubuntu build. Check the encoder list in your installed OBS and confirm the selected codec is accepted for the ingest protocol. For SDR 4K60, AV1 or HEVC has a lower recommended bitrate than H.264 when the required encoder is available and stable. If it is not, H.264 is the documented fallback. At 4K, YouTube optimizes for normal latency; its low-latency optimization option is unavailable.

Hardware encoding can shift work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component, but availability is system-dependent. OBS documents Intel Quick Sync on Linux for compatible Intel HD Graphics hardware. Support for other vendor encoders depends on the OBS build, drivers, GPU, and codec; a GPU brand or marketing label alone does not establish that a suitable encoder will appear or perform reliably.
Connect OBS and check the stream
- In OBS, select YouTube RTMPS where available, or enter the server and key copied from Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data sent to its servers.
- Start streaming in OBS. Wait for the incoming feed and preview to appear in Live Control Room, and review stream-health warnings before making the stream public.
- Test representative motion and audio, confirm the loop repeats, check audio/video sync, and watch OBS rendering and encoding lag as well as YouTube stream health.
- Run an upload speed test on the same connection you will use for the stream. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom over the total outgoing bitrate and warns that other use of a shared network can reduce available capacity.
Applying that 20% headroom guideline means planning for at least 60 Mbps of available upload for H.264 at the recommended 50 Mbps, or 42 Mbps for AV1/HEVC at 35 Mbps. Those totals are arithmetic applications of YouTube’s guidance, not separate published bitrate recommendations. Allow more capacity if other devices or services use the connection, and use the stream-health preview to catch problems before the public start.

Plan for long-running loops and archives
YouTube can automatically archive a live stream under 12 hours, including 1440p and 2160p streams. YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need an archive for an extended loop, enable local recording as a backup, confirm the recording file is growing, and plan a controlled stop and restart before the stream exceeds 12 hours.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The stream does not appear in Live Control Room: Confirm OBS is streaming to the selected YouTube RTMPS destination or the correct server, and recheck the stream key. If you regenerate a key, update OBS with the new one.
- YouTube reports an unstable or low-bitrate feed: Check the actual upload capacity on the live connection, reduce competing network traffic, and verify the bitrate and CBR settings. Keep the 20% headroom target in mind.
- OBS shows rendering or encoding lag: A compatible system can still be too slow for the chosen scene and settings. Check whether the selected encoder is supported and stable on the installed drivers, simplify the scene, or test a lower workload before scheduling the stream. No universal CPU or GPU model can be guaranteed to sustain 4K60 across configurations.
- The encoder option you expect is missing: Codec support depends on the installed OBS build, GPU, drivers, and encoder. Select an option OBS actually exposes and YouTube accepts; do not assume a codec is available just because the GPU vendor advertises it.
- The loop has a visible or audible jump: Inspect the file’s endpoints and test a complete cycle. The repeat setting restarts playback, but the source file and system determine whether the transition looks seamless.
- The YouTube archive is incomplete or absent: Check stream duration. A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured, so retain a local recording if the archive matters.
