To run a 24/7 synthwave radio channel on YouTube with OBS, first clear livestream and replay rights for every track, then have each rights holder add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Verify that YouTube Live is enabled, build the broadcast in YouTube Studio and OBS, test the complete setup privately, and monitor the stream so you can respond to interruptions. A working OBS scene does not grant music rights, and a license alone may not prevent YouTube from interrupting a stream.
1. Clear music rights and Content ID allowlisting first
Do this before you build a playlist or schedule a broadcast. YouTube says all live streams are scanned for third-party content, including copyrighted material. If its systems continue to detect such content, the live stream can be interrupted or terminated. YouTube also advises creators who have licensed third-party material to ask its owner to add the channel to the Content ID allowlist. Make a track-by-track rights plan
For every track, get written permission that covers the uses you actually intend: live broadcast, the countries where the stream will be available, and any archived or replay version. Confirm monetization terms and attribution requirements, and ask the rights owner or distributor to allowlist your YouTube channel through Content ID. Keep the permissions and confirmation records somewhere you can retrieve them if a claim or interruption occurs.
Do not treat a downloadable file or a “royalty-free” label as proof that a track is cleared for a YouTube livestream. Read the actual license and verify livestream, archive, territory, monetization, attribution, and allowlisting terms with the rights holder. YouTube’s platform guidance describes its detection and allowlisting process; it does not certify any third-party music catalog.

Clear the visuals too
A still image, animated loop, album artwork, or other graphic in your radio scene can also belong to someone else. Clear its use for the broadcast and any archive, or use visuals you have permission to use.
2. Enable YouTube Live before launch day
YouTube’s live-streaming requirements say the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s current help page also sets a minimum age of 16 for streaming. Check the current requirements at YouTube Help’s Get started with live streaming.
YouTube for Artists advises enabling live streaming at least 24 hours before your first planned broadcast. Do not leave verification and access checks until the hour you intend to go live; confirm in your account that you can create or start a live stream. 3. Prepare the broadcast and OBS scene
Use YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room or OBS’s YouTube integration to prepare the broadcast and connect the encoder. The OBS Project forum’s YouTube setup guide describes creating or selecting a broadcast, entering details such as title and description, and starting the encoder feed from OBS. It is a community-maintained guide, originally published in 2015 and updated later, so its exact button names may not match the current interface. Build a simple radio scene
- Add the cleared synthwave audio source or playlist and check that OBS is receiving it.
- Use a licensed still image or loop, channel branding, and, if useful, currently playing metadata.
- Set the broadcast title, description, category, and thumbnail in the broadcast setup.
- Confirm the intended YouTube broadcast is selected before sending the encoder feed.
These are production choices, not special YouTube requirements. The platform sources do not establish particular OBS bitrate, resolution, keyframe, or computer specifications for this workflow; use the current YouTube and OBS guidance applicable to your account and setup rather than relying on an unsupported preset.
4. Choose horizontal, vertical, or dual presentation
YouTube supports horizontal and vertical live experiences, and YouTube for Artists describes dual streaming in both formats when available. Vertical streams can appear in the Shorts feed on mobile; horizontal streams provide the traditional viewing layout and are suited to TV screens. YouTube’s help page also identifies differences in features such as Shorts-feed discovery, clickable links, and live ads. Availability and behavior can change, so check the options currently shown in Studio before designing around a feature.

For a persistent radio visual, horizontal is a straightforward default. Consider vertical or dual streaming if mobile discovery is important to your channel. Compare the current feature set in YouTube’s live-streaming help and YouTube for Artists.
5. Test the complete chain privately
Before a public launch, run a private or unlisted test. YouTube for Artists recommends an unlisted test, and Google’s Live Streaming Checklist recommends testing the full setup privately, including the connection and audio capture.
- Start the encoder feed from OBS and confirm that the expected broadcast receives it in YouTube Studio.
- Listen to the stream output, not just the local source. Check for gaps, clipping, silence, unexpected desktop sounds, and playlist-end behavior.
- Watch the visual output for layout problems and confirm that artwork or animation is cleared for use.
- Confirm how you will stop and restart the encoder, and how you will identify whether a problem is in OBS, the network, or the YouTube broadcast.
Google’s checklist supports private full-chain testing; the audio and visual checks above are practical preflight steps for a music channel.

6. Launch, monitor, and plan for recovery
Start the prepared broadcast and verify in Live Control Room that YouTube is receiving the encoder feed and that the audio and visual output are correct. Keep access to the OBS computer and YouTube Studio, and document the steps for restarting the encoder and broadcast if either disconnects. Schedule checks of playlist playback, system audio, network, and machine state rather than assuming a stream labeled “24/7” will remain uninterrupted.
A 24/7 schedule is an operating goal, not a YouTube uptime guarantee. The available official guidance does not establish a universal maximum duration for a single live broadcast, a specific archive-retention period, or guaranteed recovery behavior. Before relying on one uninterrupted broadcast or planning scheduled restarts, verify the current limits and archive behavior in YouTube Studio.

Choose deliberately whether to keep an archive. YouTube says Content ID claims on archived live streams may be made after the stream ends if you choose to archive it. A license for live transmission does not automatically establish permission for a replay: confirm archive and replay rights for each track, and check the resulting video and any claims in YouTube Studio after the broadcast.

8. Monetization and audience context
YouTube for Artists lists shopping features, Supers, and ads among live monetization options. Eligibility and availability depend on the channel and YouTube’s current rules; these features do not establish likely earnings. YouTube for Artists reported that, on average, over 30% of daily logged-in YouTube viewers watched live content in Q2 2025. That is a platform-wide audience observation, not a forecast for a new synthwave channel or evidence of its revenue. See YouTube for Artists.
