Vimeo Livestream’s documented 24/7 feature does not keep a YouTube stream running. Vimeo Extended streaming can keep a Vimeo RTMP event live continuously, but it is an Enterprise add-on and cannot simulcast to YouTube. To send a normal Vimeo event to YouTube, use Vimeo’s separate simulcast workflow; it is not compatible with Extended streaming.

Vimeo’s standard event plans have duration limits: Advanced and Premium allow streams of up to 12 hours each, and Enterprise also lists a 12-hour limit unless the Extended streaming add-on is enabled. Current plan terms can change, so confirm eligibility and limits with Vimeo before committing.
Run a continuous event on Vimeo with Extended streaming
This procedure creates a continuous Vimeo event, not a YouTube stream. Vimeo describes Extended streaming as available for RTMP streams, not Live production mode.

- Confirm eligibility. You need Vimeo Enterprise with the Extended streaming add-on. Vimeo says to contact your account manager or sales team to enable it.
- Create a Vimeo live event. Choose an RTMP encoder workflow for the event.
- Change the event settings. In the event settings, open Production. Turn off Record event and DVR, then turn on Extended stream.
- Configure and run your encoder. Keep it sending video to the event. Extended streaming keeps the event active while the encoder signal is incoming; an operator must end the event manually.
- Test the full chain before relying on it. Check picture, audio, network stability, and what happens if the encoder or connection stops. Extended streaming is not a substitute for a dependable encoder and internet connection.
Extended events cannot be recorded or saved in the Vimeo library, and DVR is unavailable. If you need an archive, arrange a separate local or external recording workflow and validate it independently.
Vimeo’s documented encoder limits
Vimeo lists these plan limits for encoder streams on its live-events help page. They are ceilings, not recommended settings for every stream.

These Vimeo values are the limits documented by Vimeo; they are not YouTube encoder recommendations. Check your account’s current plan details before configuring a production stream.

Send a regular Vimeo event to YouTube
Vimeo documents two ways to simulcast a normal event: connect a YouTube account in Vimeo, or configure YouTube as a custom RTMP destination. Vimeo says simulcasting requires Advanced or Premium, or Enterprise with Events. YouTube’s channel must be verified.
Option 1: Connect YouTube through Vimeo’s event destinations
- In Vimeo, open the event’s Destinations panel.
- Connect and authorize the YouTube account.
- Set the YouTube privacy option for the destination.
- Enable the YouTube destination toggle for the event.
Vimeo lists support for up to 10 integrated destinations. That limit applies to its ordinary simulcast feature, not Extended streaming.
Option 2: Add YouTube as a custom RTMP destination
- In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and copy its stream URL and stream key.
- In the Vimeo event, add a custom RTMP destination and enter the YouTube ingest URL and key in the corresponding fields.
- Start the Vimeo event and verify that video and audio reach YouTube.
- If the YouTube broadcast is scheduled, check YouTube Live Control Room: Vimeo notes that an RTMP-fed scheduled stream may still require you to press Go live there.
Vimeo lists up to 20 simultaneous custom RTMP destinations for its standard workflow. Neither the 10 integrated-destination limit nor the 20 custom-destination limit makes simulcasting available for Extended streams.

Check YouTube eligibility and encoder settings
Before starting
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so activate it and confirm access before your planned broadcast.
Encoder settings YouTube documents
- Ingest protocol: RTMP or RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest.
- Video codecs: H.264, H.265, or AV1.
- Audio codecs: AAC or MP3.
- Bitrate mode: Constant bitrate (CBR).
- Frame rate: Up to 60 fps.
- Keyframes: A two-second interval is recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
Use the ingest URL and stream key assigned in YouTube Studio for the destination you are configuring. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, and replace it if it is exposed. YouTube’s encoder settings page provides the applicable bitrate guidance for the resolution and frame rate you choose; do not assume Vimeo’s plan ceilings are suitable YouTube settings.

Extended streaming keeps a Vimeo RTMP event active while its encoder continues sending a signal. Vimeo explicitly says Extended streams cannot simulcast to other destinations. The ordinary Vimeo-to-YouTube feature is a different event workflow and cannot be turned on alongside Extended streaming.

If the same continuous program must reach both Vimeo and YouTube, you would need a separate output architecture that feeds the platforms independently. Before using one, verify each service’s current ingest, account eligibility, duration limits, and failure-recovery behavior. The available documentation does not establish a tested dual-output design or endorse a particular relay.

Do not count on a complete YouTube archive of an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that does not establish that a longer continuous stream will produce one complete archive. If you need recordings, plan a separate recording process and test it.
For documentary footage, music, or other third-party material, confirm that you have the rights needed to broadcast and archive it on each platform. A live-stream setup does not grant content rights. YouTube can restrict live access, and a channel’s eligibility depends on its account standing. Review YouTube’s current policies and use a rights-cleared playlist rather than assuming that material available online is cleared for rebroadcast.

Troubleshooting
- Extended streaming is missing from event settings: Confirm that the account has the Enterprise add-on and that the event uses an RTMP encoder workflow, not Live production mode. Contact the Vimeo account manager or sales team if the add-on should be available.
- The Vimeo event ends or stops showing video: Check whether the encoder is still sending a signal and whether the network connection is stable. Extended streaming depends on incoming encoder video; it does not repair an encoder or internet outage.
- YouTube does not receive the Vimeo event: Verify the destination is enabled, the YouTube account is authorized, and the stream URL and key are copied into the correct RTMP fields. For a scheduled RTMP stream, check whether YouTube Live Control Room is waiting for a manual Go live action.
- YouTube rejects the account or will not enable live streaming: Check channel verification and restrictions from the preceding 90 days. If this is the first enablement, allow up to 24 hours.
- The stream looks unstable or has audio/video issues: Confirm that the encoder uses a supported codec, CBR, and a keyframe interval within YouTube’s guidance. Check the chosen bitrate against YouTube’s settings for the selected resolution and frame rate, and test the full path before a long event.
- You expected an archive or DVR: Vimeo Extended streaming disables recording and DVR. YouTube’s stated automatic archive rule covers streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed complete archive of a longer continuous stream.
