For Indian creators, Hetzner’s Singapore location is one option to test—not a proven lowest-latency choice. Continuous operation is an aim, not an end-to-end uptime guarantee.
How do I set up a 24/7 YouTube live stream on a VPS?
The VPS reads your media source and sends an encoded feed to YouTube Live. YouTube still controls stream creation, ingest credentials, and the public broadcast; the VPS does not replace those steps. This guide describes the workflow and settings to configure, but the commands and server sizing are not presented as tested configurations.
1. Enable live streaming and create a YouTube stream
- Enable live streaming for your YouTube channel in YouTube Studio. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do this before the planned broadcast.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select a stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Enter them in the encoder’s connection settings. Treat the key like a password: do not place it in public scripts, screenshots, repositories, or logs. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio.

2. Choose and provision a Hetzner Cloud location
Hetzner lists Cloud locations in Falkenstein, Nuremberg, Helsinki, Ashburn, Hillsboro, and Singapore. Singapore is a plausible region for creators in India to evaluate, and Hetzner’s Singapore page explicitly addresses creators in India and nearby markets. That does not establish that Singapore will have the best route for your particular ISP or to YouTube’s ingest edge; compare actual connection quality before committing to a continuous stream.

Choose a server based on the encoder workload, not just its location. The cited provider information does not establish a minimum server size or compare encoding performance among plans, so test the selected instance with your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. Compare route quality, CPU architecture and encoder performance, included outbound traffic, recurring cost, and your backup and recovery needs.
3. Estimate outbound traffic before selecting a plan
At YouTube’s recommended 4 Mbps H.264 bitrate for 720p at 30 fps, a continuous 30-day stream sends about 1.3 TB of video payload by arithmetic. This is a planning estimate, not a provider quote; protocol overhead, reconnects, other server traffic, and bitrate variation can raise consumption.

Hetzner’s traffic documentation lists 0.5–5 TB/month of included traffic for Singapore CX and CPX Cloud Servers, varying by plan. The cited table was last changed on 2024-05-21, so verify the allowance and current price for the exact plan when ordering. Details: Hetzner Cloud traffic documentation.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 options; supports up to 60 fps; recommends constant bitrate (CBR); and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. Follow the current settings shown in YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance and RTMPS ingestion documentation.

These figures are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Hetzner server can encode the chosen output. Confirm the current guidance before going live, and ensure the server can sustain the selected settings without CPU saturation or missed frames.
5. Keep the encoder running and observable
Use a process supervisor or equivalent service management to restart the encoder after a process failure, and set up health checks and alerts. These are implementation measures, not a tested service file or a guarantee of end-to-end availability. Monitor the encoder process, CPU and memory, disk space, outbound traffic, YouTube’s preview and stream status, and alerts for disconnections. Maintain a way to inspect logs without recording or exposing the stream key.

Hetzner says Cloud Firewalls block inbound traffic unless a rule allows it and allow outbound traffic by default when no outbound rules are configured. Keep only the management access you need and restrict SSH appropriately. This is security guidance inferred from the documented firewall behavior, not a provider-mandated configuration. 6. Test before relying on continuous operation
- Start the encoder and check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream status.
- Confirm stable output at the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate before making the broadcast public.
- Test your recovery procedure by checking how the supervisor behaves after an encoder process failure. Do not assume that a process restart also resolves a network, server, or YouTube ingest problem.
- Watch traffic and system-resource use during a representative run, then adjust the plan or output settings if the server or allowance is insufficient.
Can I run a YouTube live stream continuously from Hetzner Cloud?
You can configure a VPS encoder to send a continuous feed, but “24/7” describes the intended operation—not a promise that every part of the broadcast chain stays available. Hetzner’s Cloud and vServer service agreement describes commercially reasonable efforts toward 99.9% monthly availability for each Cloud Server, subject to agreement conditions. That statement is about the Cloud Server, not the media source, encoder, network route, YouTube ingestion, or public watch page. Read the Hetzner Cloud and vServer service agreement.
Keep recovery plans for failures outside the VPS itself, and monitor both the server and the YouTube broadcast. No India-to-server or server-to-ingest latency measurements establish a universally best region, and the available provider material does not establish a server size that will encode every format or resolution.
What should Indian creators know about cost and traffic?
Traffic allowance is a material part of a continuous-stream budget. Compare the bitrate-derived estimate with the exact plan’s current included outbound traffic; do not assume that the full listed range applies to every Singapore plan. Hetzner says a Cloud Server is billed while it exists, including when powered off. Outbound traffic beyond the included amount is charged in 100 MB blocks, and the 75% and 100% usage notices do not stop traffic. Check current terms and prices in the Hetzner billing FAQ before provisioning.

For India, test the route from the network you expect to use for management and evaluate the onward stream path in practice. Singapore is an option to assess, not a latency finding. Plan for recurring server charges, possible traffic overages, and any monitoring, backup, or recovery resources you decide to use; current machine prices are not established here.
How do YouTube archives work for a continuous stream?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when sending stops. Do not assume one uninterrupted stream running longer than 12 hours will produce a complete permanent archive. If the archive matters, plan deliberate stream segments and verify the channel’s current behavior in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s encoder setup and archiving guidance.
