Use Linode Longview to watch the server’s CPU, memory, and network trends, and YouTube Live Control Room to check whether YouTube is receiving a healthy feed. The two views cover different parts of the livestream path: a Linode can appear healthy while YouTube reports an ingest problem, or YouTube can receive video while the server is under strain.
What to monitor—and what each view tells you

For a livestream problem, check the host and the ingest separately. A graph of outbound traffic is useful context, but it is not a substitute for YouTube’s stream-health messages; likewise, a healthy-looking YouTube feed does not explain CPU spikes on the Linode.
Set up a useful monitoring routine
1. Watch Linode resource trends with Longview
Use Longview for ongoing CPU, memory, and network graphs. Linode staff describes a Linux client and says Longview is free for up to ten clients; because these details come from community responses and service terms can change, verify the current Longview documentation for installation steps, client limits, and availability before relying on those specifics.
During a broadcast, compare changes in CPU and outbound network activity with the time of any interruption. Look for trends rather than assuming one universal CPU percentage means a stream is safe or unsafe: the required capacity depends on the encoder workload, bitrate, and stream setup.

2. Check YouTube’s incoming feed in Live Control Room
Open YouTube Live Control Room while the event is active and inspect stream health and status messages. YouTube says these messages can include specific errors and instructions. Its guidance says: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.”
3. Compare bitrate with actual upload capacity
Use the encoder’s configured bitrate and include any backup feed when estimating total outbound demand. YouTube Help advises that the total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Test upload capacity; download speed does not tell you how much data the Linode can reliably send out.

There is no universal bitrate target for every broadcast. Choose the recommendation for the stream’s codec, resolution, and frame rate in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance. For example, the guidance lists 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended for H.264 at 1080p/60 fps; its AV1/H.265 row lists 4 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommended. These are encoder-setting recommendations, not guaranteed CPU or network requirements for a Linode.
Diagnose whether the issue is host load or the network path
When CPU or memory trends change
- Correlate Longview’s CPU and memory graphs with the timing of YouTube warnings and stream interruptions.
- Check whether the encoder or other processes are consuming resources at the same time. Do not infer a workload-independent CPU threshold from a single graph.
- Do not treat Cloud Manager’s running status as proof that the livestream process is healthy.
When network graphs look normal but delivery is poor
Bandwidth capacity and observed throughput are different. A nominal capacity does not guarantee that a particular route can sustain it at the time of a stream. Linode staff recommends iPerf testing between the Linode and another machine to measure throughput; results depend on both endpoints and the network path between them.

Linode troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking CPU steal and using bidirectional MTR to assess connectivity. These tests investigate different failure modes: Longview shows host trends, iPerf measures endpoint-to-endpoint throughput, and MTR helps examine route quality. None alone proves that YouTube ingest is healthy, so continue to check Live Control Room.
When YouTube reports an ingest warning
- Read the exact status message and follow its instructions; do not assume every warning is caused by the Linode.
- Compare the configured total bitrate, including a backup stream if used, with tested outbound upload capacity and retain YouTube’s recommended headroom.
- Check Longview for concurrent CPU, memory, or network changes, then use end-to-end network tests if local graphs do not explain the problem.
Monitoring options beyond Longview
Linode staff points to Prometheus and Grafana as an alternative system-monitoring approach. That stack can suit readers who need a configurable monitoring setup, but the needed exporters, collection, dashboards, and alerting depend on the system being monitored. Linode API statistics are another possible view: a Linode staff answer describes CPU, disk I/O, and IPv4/IPv6 network statistics over the prior 24 hours. Verify current API fields and availability in Linode’s platform documentation before building an integration; the community explanation does not establish the current schema or retention behavior.
