How to Set Up a 24/7 YouTube Stream in Streamlabs Desktop

Streamlabs Desktop can encode a YouTube broadcast, but a 24/7 local stream also depends on a working source, computer, power and internet. Here’s how to set it up and test it.

You can use Streamlabs Desktop to send a live video feed to YouTube, but the app alone does not make a stream reliably 24/7. For a local setup, your computer, Streamlabs, video source, power and internet connection all need to keep working. This guide covers the YouTube and Streamlabs setup, the encoder settings to check, and the limits to plan around—especially for prerecorded documentaries.

Before you start: confirm YouTube live access

Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming access can take up to 24 hours to enable, so check eligibility before your planned launch. See YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance.

Install Streamlabs Desktop and connect the YouTube account you intend to use. Streamlabs’ quick-start guide lists Windows 11 or macOS 12 as minimum operating systems; requirements can change, so check its current quick-start guide before installing.

Prepare the documentary scene in Streamlabs Desktop

Choose and check your scene

Create or select a scene, then use the Sources panel to add the visual and audio sources you need. Check the preview and audio mixer before broadcasting. For a documentary stream, verify that the picture, soundtrack, captions or other intended materials are present and that no unintended desktop, notification or private information is visible.

A scene that displays a video is not, by itself, proof that Streamlabs will loop that local file continuously. The current Streamlabs guidance cited here covers general source setup, but does not establish a current local-file loop control or its exact behavior. Check the current app before relying on a looping option; do not assume the source will restart indefinitely.

Check rights before broadcasting

Make sure you have the rights or permission needed to stream every documentary, clip, soundtrack, photograph and other element. A video being publicly available or previously uploaded does not automatically give you permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube may restrict or remove a stream when content violates its policies or rights holders’ claims. Read YouTube’s Community Guidelines and review the relevant rights and permissions for your material before scheduling a continuous broadcast.

Create or schedule the YouTube live event

Set up the event in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
  2. Create a new stream or schedule one for later.
  3. Enter the event details, including title, description, thumbnail, category and privacy setting. Review any available stream settings, including auto-start and auto-stop, for the behavior you want.
  4. Save the event, then confirm that you can select it from Streamlabs Desktop’s Go Live flow.

You can also create or schedule an event from Streamlabs Desktop; its scheduling guide describes that integration, though its interface details may have changed. Scheduling lets you share the event in advance, and YouTube says viewers can opt into reminders. Auto-start and auto-stop are event controls; they do not establish that your video source loops or that a failed encoder reconnects automatically. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.

Connect Streamlabs Desktop to the right stream

Streamlabs documents two ways to connect: sign in to YouTube in Desktop and create a new event from the app, or create the event in YouTube Studio first and select it in Desktop’s Go Live flow. Make sure the chosen event is the one you intend to broadcast and that its privacy setting is correct.

If you configure an encoder manually, YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key. YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private; if it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio. The YouTube stream settings page explains where these settings fit into the event setup. Streamlabs’ troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the key for connection problems.

Set encoder output and test the stream

YouTube’s general encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS, H.264 video and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Use the bitrate table in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance to choose a target appropriate for your resolution and frame rate; there is no single bitrate that suits every connection or computer.

  • Prefer RTMPS when supported. YouTube describes it as the secure extension of RTMP.
  • Check upload headroom. YouTube recommends keeping the sum of stream bitrates below available upload capacity with about 20% headroom. Measure upload capacity, account for other household or office traffic, and include both primary and backup bitrates if you use both.

Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before relying on the broadcast. YouTube recommends configuring the encoder in advance and monitoring quality; network disruptions can interrupt a stream. Its encoder setup and troubleshooting guidance includes the relevant settings and checks.

Go live—and understand what 24/7 requires

  1. Confirm the correct YouTube event and privacy setting in Streamlabs Desktop.
  2. Start the encoder and wait for the Live Control Room preview to appear.
  3. When required by the event settings, start the broadcast in Live Control Room.
  4. Monitor stream health, picture, sound and network stability. Check local recording or archive growth separately if you need a copy.

A local Streamlabs setup only sends a feed while its source, app, computer, power and internet connection remain available. Account for sleep settings, operating-system restarts, application crashes and network interruptions. The cited Streamlabs material does not establish automatic recovery after a computer, app or connection failure, so do not treat a successful initial launch as an unattended uptime guarantee. YouTube also warns that network disruptions can break a stream; wired Ethernet can help avoid an unreliable Wi-Fi link, but it is optional and cannot prevent a power or ISP outage. See YouTube’s guidance on stream stability.

Plan for archives separately

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not promise that one continuous 24-hour broadcast will produce a complete archive as a single file. If you need a full copy, plan a separate recording or archive workflow and verify the current YouTube behavior for your event. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers its archive statement.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

Symptom What to check Next step
Streamlabs does not connect to YouTube Confirm the selected event, stream URL and stream key. Check that the key belongs to the intended event. Sign out and back in, restart Streamlabs Desktop, and recheck the key. For applicable connection errors, refresh the custom ingest/server selection. Follow the current Streamlabs troubleshooting steps.
Preview is missing or shows the wrong content Confirm the selected scene and its sources; inspect the scene preview before going live. Correct the scene or source selection, then check the Live Control Room preview again.
Video or audio is unstable Check stream health, available upload capacity and competing network traffic. Compare total stream bitrate with upload capacity. Reduce output bitrate, resolution or frame rate to a sustainable setting, then test again. Keep YouTube’s recommended approximately 20% upload headroom.
A prerecorded video stops or does not repeat Do not assume a local source is looping; the cited Streamlabs guidance does not verify a current loop control. Check the current source settings and test repeated playback before using it for a continuous broadcast. A scene preview or one successful playback does not confirm unattended looping.
A stream ends after the computer or network fails The local encoder depends on the computer, power and connection remaining available. Restore the failed component, reconnect to the intended event and check the preview before resuming. The cited Streamlabs material does not establish automatic recovery from these failures.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you need an unattended prerecorded YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. Its cloud service keeps looping uploaded videos without a computer or home connection staying on. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not a camera-based live broadcast.

  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free, with no card required.
