How to Set Up a 24/7 YouTube Livestream on Linode with OBS

Akamai documents a Linode RTMP relay fed by local OBS, not a validated headless OBS encoder on a VM. Here’s how the relay workflow works, what YouTube requires and what to test before relying on a 24/7 stream.

Short answer: Akamai’s published Linode guidance documents a cloud-hosted RTMP relay that receives a stream from OBS running on your own computer and forwards it to YouTube. It does not verify that OBS can run unattended on a generic Linode VM as a reliable 24/7 encoder. If you need OBS itself to run on the VM, treat that as an unvalidated setup: verify its graphics session, sustained encoding performance, restart behavior and costs before relying on it.

Choose the architecture before you configure OBS

“OBS on Linode” can mean two different things. In Akamai’s RTMP-server tutorial, OBS runs on the streamer’s computer and sends video to an RTMP relay hosted on Linode; the relay then pushes the stream to YouTube. That adds a server between OBS and YouTube, but the computer running OBS still has to stay on and connected.

Running OBS directly on a Linode VM would move the encoder into the cloud and remove that local-computer dependency. The official Linode and OBS materials covered here do not establish a supported, unattended, headless setup for that arrangement or specify an instance size for continuous encoding. Do not treat the relay tutorial’s sizing example as an OBS-encoding recommendation.

Setup What runs where What to account for
OBS directly to YouTube OBS encodes on your computer and sends the stream to YouTube. Your computer, power and network connection must remain available.
OBS to a Linode relay, then YouTube OBS runs locally; a Linode-hosted RTMP server forwards the feed to YouTube. The relay adds a server to configure and maintain, but does not remove the local encoder requirement. This is the architecture shown in Akamai’s RTMP tutorial.
OBS directly on a Linode VM The VM would encode and send the stream to YouTube. The reviewed official guides do not establish the required unattended display/session arrangement, suitable sustained encoding capacity or recovery procedure. Validate those before deployment.

Akamai’s separate LiveKit guide also places OBS on the local streaming machine rather than establishing an OBS-on-VM recipe. The guides are useful for understanding documented cloud architectures, not as proof that a headless Linode encoder will stay healthy indefinitely.

Check that your YouTube channel can go live

Before setting up an encoder, confirm that your channel is verified, has no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and meets YouTube’s stated minimum age requirement of 16 for live streaming. Create or schedule the event in YouTube Live Control Room. The stream URL and stream key for that event are shown in its stream settings.

Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put it in screenshots, public configuration examples, shared logs or command history. If it is exposed, replace it in Live Control Room and update the encoder or relay that uses it.

Set the documented OBS-to-Linode-relay workflow up

This procedure describes the architecture documented in Akamai’s RTMP-server tutorial: OBS runs on your computer, while a Linode Compute Instance hosts the relay. It is not a procedure for running OBS headlessly on the VM.

  1. Create and prepare the Linode relay. Follow Akamai’s RTMP-server tutorial for its Ubuntu 20.04-based relay example. Its statement that a 1 GB Linode can suffice applies to that tutorial’s single-stream relay workload only. It does not establish the capacity needed to encode video with OBS on the VM.
  2. Get the YouTube destination details. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the event’s stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key. Prefer the RTMPS endpoint where supported. YouTube may show the standard RTMP URL by default; its RTMPS guidance explains that the secure URL can be revealed with the lock control. Use the URL shown for your own event rather than hard-coding an endpoint from an example.
  3. Configure the relay’s YouTube destination. Set the relay to forward its incoming stream to the event’s YouTube server URL and key, following the tutorial’s configuration process. Keep the key private in the relay configuration and restrict access to the server and its logs.
  4. Configure OBS to send to the relay. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose a custom service if the YouTube preset does not match the relay workflow, and enter the relay’s ingest address and stream key. The key OBS uses here is the one configured for the relay’s incoming stream; YouTube’s destination credentials belong on the relay’s outgoing connection.
  5. Start a test before the public broadcast. Start the event or test stream in Live Control Room, then start streaming in OBS. Confirm that YouTube receives a preview and reports healthy stream status. Check playback from the public watch page and a mobile device before treating the setup as ready.
  6. Test failure and recovery behavior. Deliberately test the restart procedure and, if you have a backup encoder, YouTube recommends checking it by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network. A relay does not by itself prove the encoder or the full chain will recover after a failure.

Set OBS output to match the stream

Use YouTube’s encoder recommendations for the resolution, frame rate and codec you actually plan to send. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists a 5 Mbps minimum and recommends 10 Mbps. That figure is not a universal setting for every resolution or frame rate.

  • Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS; choose RTMPS when the encoder and relay support it.
  • Rate control: CBR.
  • Keyframes: two-second interval recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Frame rate: YouTube’s listed encoder settings allow up to 60 fps; choose a frame rate your content and system can sustain.
  • Bitrate: set it for the selected resolution, frame rate and codec using YouTube’s encoder settings. Do not copy the 1080p30 figure to a different profile without checking its recommendation.

Measure the upload capacity available to the machine sending the feed. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom; its guidance also says the total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth. For a relay setup, check the outbound capacity where OBS sends to the relay and the relay’s capacity toward YouTube. A generic Compute Instance description does not promise a particular throughput for your VM.

Plan for continuous operation and YouTube archives

A test preview proves that a feed reaches YouTube at that moment; it does not establish that an encoder, relay or internet connection will run without interruption. For a 24/7 plan, decide which component will be monitored, how you will restart it after a crash or reboot, and how you will confirm that the public stream has resumed. The official materials covered here do not provide a validated system-service or restart recipe for unattended OBS on a Linode.

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous 24-hour broadcast exceeds that stated window, so do not assume YouTube will preserve the entire run as one complete video. The cited guidance does not specify how every longer stream is handled.

Costs and operational trade-offs

A Linode relay involves the Compute Instance plus the time to configure, secure and maintain the relay. If you are considering OBS directly on the VM instead, separately verify an instance suitable for sustained encoding, network capacity, display/session requirements and recovery behavior. The cited materials do not establish a current price or a generally suitable VM size for that use.

A local OBS encoder avoids the extra relay server, but still depends on the local machine and connection. The relay pattern can provide a cloud forwarding layer; it is not a substitute for a continuously running encoder. Choose based on which part of the stream you need to host and operate.

Troubleshoot the stream by its failure point

  • YouTube receives no preview: Check that the event is active, the encoder is sending to the intended destination, and the server URL and key match the current event settings. In the relay architecture, check both the OBS-to-relay connection and the relay-to-YouTube destination.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health or the feed buffers: Check the sending machine’s available upload bandwidth, reduce the selected bitrate if it exceeds stable capacity, and preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom. Confirm that the output profile matches the intended resolution and frame rate.
  • The stream connects but disconnects later: Identify whether OBS, the local network, the relay or the YouTube connection stopped. Test the restart process for the component that failed; the presence of a Linode relay does not establish automatic recovery for the whole chain.
  • The stream key no longer works: Recheck the event’s current stream settings and update the relevant encoder or relay. If the key may have been exposed, replace it rather than continuing to use it.
  • OBS on a VM will not start or encode reliably: The reviewed sources do not specify a supported headless display/session configuration or sizing recipe. Verify the graphics environment, sustained encoder performance and behavior after reboot on the chosen instance instead of assuming the relay tutorial covers these requirements.
