You can use VLC to stream media over a network, but that alone does not confirm that your installed Ubuntu version of VLC can publish reliably to YouTube over RTMPS. Check your exact VLC build for a compatible RTMPS output path before designing a 24/7 broadcast around it. If it is unavailable, use an encoder that documents support for YouTube ingest. In either case, test the complete setup in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it.
What you need to verify before choosing VLC
YouTube receives a live feed from an encoder at a stream URL, authenticated with a stream key. VideoLAN describes VLC as able to stream media it can read, but its cited overview does not provide a YouTube-specific RTMPS publishing recipe. These are different capabilities: VLC’s general network-streaming feature does not by itself prove that your installed build can send a compatible feed to YouTube.
- Your VLC build: Check the stream-output options in the VLC version installed on your Ubuntu system. Confirm that a current RTMPS output path is actually available; do not assume it from VLC’s general streaming support.
- Your source: Decide which recording or media source you intend to send and how it will repeat. Confirm the full playback-and-output chain in a test rather than assuming that a local loop will remain connected to YouTube.
- Your connection and power: The Ubuntu computer, network equipment, and internet connection all need to remain available. A UPS can help with local power interruptions if it is sized for the combined load and required runtime; it cannot fix an ISP or routing failure.
The available official guidance does not establish a release-specific Ubuntu VLC command, India-specific ISP performance, or automatic recovery behavior for your particular VLC build. No direct VLC-to-YouTube RTMPS configuration should be treated as confirmed until it passes a controlled test on your system.
Get a YouTube stream URL and protect the key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key provided for that stream. Enter these only in the encoder you have chosen.
- Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
- If you think the key has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement.
YouTube’s setup guidance describes an encoder sending its feed to the stream URL with the key. Keep the distinction clear: VLC can read and stream media, but your installed build still needs a verified YouTube-compatible publishing path.

Check whether your Ubuntu VLC build can publish to YouTube
- Open the VLC version installed on the Ubuntu machine that would run the broadcast.
- Inspect its streaming or output configuration for a usable RTMPS output option. YouTube supports RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP, but that does not establish that every VLC build exposes an RTMPS output suitable for YouTube.
- Confirm that the output lets you configure YouTube’s destination URL and stream key without exposing the key in a public location.
- If the output is missing, unclear, or cannot be validated, do not build the 24/7 plan around direct VLC publishing. Choose an encoder whose documentation explicitly covers YouTube ingest, then configure it to YouTube’s published settings below.
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test broadcast and inspect the preview and stream health in Live Control Room before scheduling a long session.
The cited VideoLAN overview establishes VLC’s general streaming role, not a tested Ubuntu-specific RTMPS procedure. There is therefore no verified VLC command or set of menu selections to copy here; the available output modules vary by installed build and must be checked locally.
Match YouTube’s ingest settings to the video you will send
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. Use the bitrate row in YouTube’s guidance that matches your codec, resolution, and frame rate. Do not treat a bitrate for one configuration as a universal setting.

Measure your actual upload performance and leave capacity for variation; a stream that consumes all available upload bandwidth is vulnerable to drops. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health. Use footage with representative motion and audio in the test, since a static image alone may not reveal problems that appear during a documentary with movement, transitions, or a continuous soundtrack.
Test the whole broadcast and plan for interruptions
- Start a test using the same computer, network, source material, encoder settings, and stream key arrangement you plan to use for the real broadcast.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Confirm the picture, audio, and connection remain acceptable for a meaningful test period.
- Test your intended playback loop, not just a short opening clip. Confirm that the source resumes as expected and that the encoder continues to send a feed.
- Consider the failure points separately: power loss, home internet interruption, encoder or VLC process failure, and a YouTube-side disconnect require different recovery paths.
- If you use a UPS, size it for the combined computer and network-equipment load and the runtime you need. It may bridge a local power interruption, but it does not provide internet redundancy or guarantee continuous delivery.
- Decide whether you need an archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same automatic archive treatment for a single broadcast lasting longer than 12 hours. Check current platform behavior and use a suitable recording or rotation plan if longer-session archives matter.
A 24/7 broadcast is a continuity plan, not just a playback setting. Confirm how your chosen encoder behaves after losing its process, connection, or YouTube ingest, and test the recovery procedure rather than assuming it will reconnect automatically.

Copyright and the content you loop
Before looping a documentary, soundtrack, or other recording, make sure you have the rights and permissions needed to broadcast it on YouTube. A successful encoder test only confirms the technical path; it does not establish that the content is cleared for a live broadcast. Review the applicable YouTube rules and the rights for every video and audio element in the loop before going live.
