How to Show a Logo and Ticker Over a VLC Playlist on YouTube Live

Use OBS to layer a logo and ticker over a VLC playlist, then send the finished scene to YouTube Live with the right stream key and encoder settings.

Use OBS Studio to combine a VLC playlist with a logo and ticker, then send the finished scene to YouTube Live. Add the playlist as an OBS VLC Video source, place an Image source for the logo and a Text or Browser source for the ticker above it, and stream OBS using the URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room.

What you need

  • OBS Studio to compose and stream the scene.
  • VLC media player for OBS’s VLC Video source. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC too.
  • Your playlist’s media files, a logo image, and ticker text. A web page shown through an OBS Browser source is an option for more flexible or animated ticker content.
  • YouTube live-stream access and the stream URL and key for the stream you intend to use.

YouTube says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to live stream. Check access in YouTube Studio before scheduling your broadcast. YouTube live streaming tips

Build the playlist and overlay in OBS

  1. Open OBS and add a VLC Video source. Add the files you want in the playlist. OBS requires VLC to be installed for this source; if VLC Video is missing, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
  2. If you are playing one supported local file rather than a playlist, you can use an OBS Media Source instead. OBS documents support for common video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. For a playlist, use VLC Video.
  3. Add an OBS Image source and select your logo file. Resize and position it in the preview.
  4. Add a Text source for a straightforward ticker. Enter the text and position it where it will remain legible without obscuring important parts of the video. If the ticker needs animation or content from a web page, add a Browser source and configure its page.
  5. In the Sources list, keep the logo and ticker above the VLC Video source. OBS renders sources higher in the list above those below them. Use the preview to adjust size, placement, and visibility. The OBS Sources Guide explains source ordering and visibility.

Before going live, play the playlist in OBS and check the composition at the output size you plan to use. Confirm that the logo and ticker are visible over the video and that the playlist’s audio is present.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover creating a live stream with an encoder.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into OBS’s streaming settings. The key tells YouTube where to accept the encoder feed; treat it as a credential and do not share or display it.
  3. Configure OBS’s output to match your chosen resolution and frame rate, then start streaming from OBS. Check the YouTube preview before the broadcast and monitor stream health while live.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP. Its published encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you select.

Choose encoder settings and test the stream

For one specific reference point, YouTube’s published table lists H.264 at 1080p30 with a 5 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended bitrate. Those are ingest recommendations, not a promise of quality on every connection. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain reliably and test it before the broadcast.

Setting Guidance
Protocol RTMPS recommended by YouTube.
Video codec H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 are listed in YouTube’s encoder guidance; check the current table for your chosen output.
Rate control CBR.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds.
Frame rate Up to 60 fps.
H.264 at 1080p30 5 Mbps minimum; 10 Mbps recommended in YouTube’s published table.
Stereo audio AAC or MP3 supported; 128 Kbps is the listed advanced setting.

These settings come from YouTube’s encoder settings guidance. The exact bitrate target depends on the output resolution and frame rate; consult the current YouTube table rather than applying the 1080p30 figure to every stream.

Start a test stream or use YouTube’s preview before the real broadcast. Verify the video, overlay placement, ticker readability, and audio in the YouTube preview, then watch stream health during the live stream. YouTube also provides live stream settings guidance.

When VLC alone can add the logo

VLC has a built-in logo overlay if you only need to attach an image to its video output: open Tools → Effects and Filters → Video Effects → Overlay, choose an image, and adjust its position and opacity. VideoLAN also documents command-line logo options in its logo instructions. For a separate ticker and easier control over the playlist, logo, and text as independent elements, compose the scene in OBS.

Fix common problems

  • VLC Video is missing in OBS: Install VLC, then check that its architecture matches OBS. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
  • The playlist plays but the logo or ticker is invisible: Check that each source is visible and positioned above VLC Video in the Sources list.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: Recheck the stream URL and key in Live Control Room and OBS. Keep the key private.
  • The preview is present but the stream is unstable: Check YouTube’s stream-health feedback, choose a bitrate your upload can sustain, and test again. Confirm CBR and the recommended keyframe interval.
  • The channel cannot start a live stream: Check verification and live-stream access in YouTube Studio, including whether restrictions have applied within the previous 90 days.

Copyright and playlist rights

Before streaming a playlist, make sure you have the rights and permissions needed for the video, music, images, and any ticker content. Adding a logo or ticker does not itself grant permission to rebroadcast material. YouTube’s live-stream eligibility and stream-health guidance does not establish that a particular playlist is cleared for use; review the rights for each item before broadcasting.
