You can run a YouTube live stream from an Ubuntu VPS by installing and running OBS in a persistent graphical session, connecting OBS to a YouTube stream URL and key, and keeping the VPS, encoder and network monitored. First enable live streaming on your channel; YouTube says initial enablement may take up to 24 hours. A VPS and OBS do not guarantee uninterrupted service, and YouTube may not capture an archive of a stream longer than 12 hours.
Before you start: check the channel and the VPS
Enable YouTube Live ahead of time
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and enable live streaming if it is not already enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so complete this step well before the intended start. Create or schedule an encoder stream there; YouTube provides the ingest URL and stream key for OBS. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
Treat the stream key like a password. Do not include it in a public script, screenshot, shared configuration or log. If it is exposed, replace it using YouTube’s stream-key controls and update OBS with the new key.
Confirm the VPS can run a graphical encoder
OBS is not simply a background command-line encoder: on Linux/Unix, its published requirements include OpenGL 3.3 and an X Window System or Wayland display environment. OBS cautions that a compatible system is not necessarily capable of streaming or recording well; CPU demand varies with the encoder, output resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. Check the VPS provider’s graphics/display support, CPU, memory, sustained outbound bandwidth and transfer limits against your planned workload. The cited official documentation does not establish a universal minimum VPS size.

A headless VPS without a usable display environment is not ready for a normal OBS desktop session. Decide how the graphical session will persist through remote disconnections and reboots, and how OBS will be restarted and monitored if it exits. A persistent desktop session, process supervision and monitoring are sensible operational measures, but the official guidance cited here does not certify a particular remote desktop, service manager or watchdog setup. Test your actual VPS and scene for an extended period before relying on it.
Install and prepare OBS on Ubuntu
The official sources cited here establish OBS’s Linux display requirements and YouTube’s encoder settings, but do not provide a complete, current Ubuntu VPS installation recipe. Ubuntu VPS images and desktop support vary by provider, so follow the current OBS installation instructions for your Ubuntu release and confirm that the chosen install method supports the graphics session available on the server. Do not assume that installing OBS alone supplies a working display server or makes a headless instance stream-ready.

- Set up a supported graphical environment. Verify that the VPS provides X Window System or Wayland and OpenGL 3.3, then start a desktop session that remains available when your remote login disconnects.
- Install OBS using current project instructions. Launch it inside that graphical session and confirm it opens reliably after a session restart. The OBS system requirements page lists the Linux/Unix baseline and warns that performance still depends on the workload.
- Build the intended scene. Add only the video, audio and visual elements the broadcast needs. Scene complexity affects encoding load, so test with the real content rather than an empty scene.
- Plan restart and observation. Decide how you will notice an OBS exit, VPS reboot, failed connection or unhealthy stream, and how you will restore service. Do not treat a persistent desktop session as a guarantee of automatic recovery.
Connect OBS to YouTube
- Copy the ingest details. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, open the encoder stream and copy its stream URL and key. Keep the key private.
- Enter the connection in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose YouTube if the service is available, or select the custom server option and enter YouTube’s URL and stream key. Use the URL and key shown for that stream, not values from an unrelated setup.
- Set and save output settings. Use the settings below as a starting point, then reduce resolution, frame rate or bitrate if the VPS cannot sustain them without encoder overload or dropped frames.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube. Click Start Streaming in OBS. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room and click Go live as YouTube’s workflow directs.
- Verify the public output. Open the watch page from another device or network and check both picture and sound. Keep the Live Control Room and OBS status visible during the test.
Choose YouTube-compatible settings the VPS can sustain
YouTube’s published RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance supports H.264 video, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table when choosing an output profile.
| Setting | Starting point or requirement | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 | Use a YouTube-supported encoder and verify the VPS can encode the selected resolution and frame rate. |
| Rate control | CBR | Set a constant bitrate the VPS’s sustained upload can maintain; a speed test is not a substitute for a live preflight. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds | Set the interval in OBS output/encoder options when available. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 | Check the stream from the watch page for clear, continuous audio. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps supported | Use only a frame rate your encoder can sustain with the intended scene. |
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended by YouTube | These are YouTube’s platform figures, not a tested VPS capability or a guarantee of a stable stream. |
For an initial 1080p30 H.264 test, the YouTube table gives 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate. That recommendation does not mean every VPS can encode or upload at that rate reliably. YouTube recommends running an upload speed test; also conduct a preflight with representative motion and audio, then monitor stream health while live. If the connection indicator turns yellow or red or OBS’s dropped-frame count rises, the connection may be unstable or the bitrate may exceed what the connection can sustain. Lower the bitrate or output demands and test again. OBS’s Help Portal explains dropped-frame and connection-status indicators.

Plan continuity and recordings separately
A continuous broadcast and a complete YouTube archive are separate goals. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording backup if the archive matters. Its DVR guidance also warns that rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours.
If you need a complete recording, plan a separate local archive or shorter broadcast sessions, and test how your chosen workflow handles transitions. Local recording adds storage and operational demands on the VPS; confirm available disk space and monitor recording status. Do not assume that a 24-hour YouTube broadcast will produce a complete replay.

The official guidance emphasizes testing and monitoring; it does not promise an indefinite connection or automatic recovery after a host failure, reboot, network interruption or OBS crash. Test failure and restart behavior on your own setup. Monitor the public output and stream health, and check any local recording independently.

| Symptom | Likely issue | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube will not let the channel start a live stream | Live streaming has not been enabled, or first-time enablement is still processing. | Enable it in advance; YouTube says initial enablement may take up to 24 hours. |
| OBS cannot connect to the ingest server | Wrong stream URL or key, a changed key, or an unstable outbound connection. | Copy the current URL and key from the Live Control Room, update OBS, check the VPS network, then start the encoder again. |
| OBS opens but cannot show or render a scene | The VPS lacks a usable X/Wayland display session or compatible graphics support. | Verify the display environment and OpenGL 3.3 baseline; check provider capabilities rather than assuming a headless image is sufficient. |
| Dropped frames rise or connection status becomes yellow/red | The network path is unstable or the configured bitrate is too high for sustained upload. | Run an upload speed test, lower bitrate or output demands, and repeat a representative preflight. |
| Encoder overload or stuttering video | Encoding demand exceeds available CPU/graphics capacity, potentially due to resolution, frame rate or scene complexity. | Simplify the scene or reduce resolution/frame rate, then run a sustained test on the actual VPS. |
| The public watch page has no sound or unexpected picture | Audio/video sources or the selected scene are misconfigured. | Inspect the OBS meters and scene, then verify both picture and sound from another device before relying on the stream. |
| A very long stream has no complete replay or limited rewind | YouTube’s archive and DVR behavior for streams over 12 hours. | Maintain a separate local backup or use shorter sessions; do not rely on YouTube to archive a stream exceeding 12 hours. |
