Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To run an acoustic guitar radio stream on YouTube around the clock with FFmpeg, you need music you have the rights to stream, a continuing audio-and-video input, an FFmpeg command that publishes to YouTube Live, and a host that stays online and restarts the process when it fails. YouTube Live expects video as well as audio, so even a radio-style stream needs a still image or moving visual. Test the complete setup privately or unlisted before announcing it.
1. Clear the music rights before building the stream
Use recordings you made or music whose rights explicitly cover the intended live-stream use, platform, territories and duration. Keep the license or permission documentation accessible, and ask whether the rights owner must add your YouTube channel to a Content ID allowlist. YouTube’s livestream terms say streamers represent that they hold the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of live content, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers and other participants. The rights you need in practice can depend on where the stream is available and the agreements in force.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can trigger a warning or placeholder, and an unresolved match can interrupt or terminate the stream. A license alone may not prevent that interruption: the rights owner may also need to allowlist your channel. YouTube says Creator Music tracks—both licensed and revenue-sharing—are for long-form videos, not live streams, so do not use a Creator Music track as the soundtrack for this live radio stream. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and Creator Music usage details.
Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate. YouTube’s channel monetization policies assess reused content at the channel level; permission to use music does not by itself guarantee that a channel will qualify for monetization.

2. Prepare a continuous audio source and visual
Choose and check the audio
Prepare local audio files or a lawful audio feed that can play continuously on the machine running FFmpeg. Normalize formats and sample rates if needed to avoid inconsistent playback. For a playlist, decide how it will repeat and listen through the transitions: a loop can have gaps, clicks or abrupt changes even when the files themselves play correctly. Confirm that the entire playlist is cleared for live use.
Provide video as well as sound
YouTube Live is an audio-video workflow. Use a stable visual such as cover art, a branded still or a looped scene, and ensure the outgoing stream keeps sending video frames rather than audio alone. A horizontal frame and a modest resolution and frame rate are usually a sensible fit for a static radio visual. YouTube does not specify a special minimum resolution for a static acoustic-radio image in its encoder guidance.

Choose an output bitrate your host’s sustained upload can reliably maintain, leaving headroom for network variation. A higher video bitrate is not useful if the connection cannot sustain it; instability can be more damaging than a modest, consistent picture.
3. Create the YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the broadcast/stream you intend to use.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it can publish to your channel. Store it in a protected environment variable or a file with restricted permissions rather than posting it in public logs or sharing it.
- Use RTMP or, preferably, RTMPS for the standard encoder workflow. YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the connection to Google’s servers. Its encoder guidance also describes H.264 video, AAC audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
For a basic stereo music stream, YouTube’s recommended audio baseline is AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. Select a video bitrate from the range YouTube lists for your chosen resolution and frame rate, then ensure the connection can sustain it. The guidance supports up to 60 fps, but an acoustic radio still or slow visual may not benefit from a high frame rate. Confirm the settings available for your channel and the actual outgoing stream rather than assuming that a preset matches them.

YouTube transcodes incoming live video into output formats for viewers. Your upload settings therefore describe the stream you send, not every quality option viewers may see.
4. Publish with FFmpeg
FFmpeg needs an input that supplies both audio and video, then an output directed to YouTube’s ingest server. The exact input syntax depends on how you make the visual and audio available, so there is no single command that fits every machine. For example, the audio might be a playlist or feed while the video comes from a still image or loop; combine them into one audio-video output before publishing.

- Encode video as H.264 and audio as AAC stereo, with the audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps as the basic YouTube-recommended music setting.
- Set video to CBR and use a keyframe interval of two seconds, never more than four seconds. Match the bitrate to the selected resolution and frame rate in YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
- Use the stream key only in the output destination required by your ingest workflow; avoid exposing it in shared scripts or logs.
- Make sure the audio and visual inputs continue for the full intended run. An exhausted file, ended playlist or frozen visual can leave the broadcast without the behavior you expect.
For ingest, RTMP/RTMPS is the straightforward choice for a standard H.264/AAC FFmpeg stream. HLS is a special alternative for workflows that require it: YouTube’s HLS setup requires a supported configuration including HTTPS, transport-stream segments and a rolling playlist, and YouTube notes that segmented delivery has higher latency. Unless you have a specific HLS requirement, use RTMPS. Details are in YouTube’s HLS setup guide.

FFmpeg does not make a stream immortal. If you run it on a home computer, that machine, its network and its power must remain available. A remote VPS or an always-on computer are possible hosting choices; whichever you use, arrange for the FFmpeg process to start at boot, restart after a failure and leave useful logs for diagnosis. A service supervisor such as systemd is one common implementation pattern, not a YouTube requirement.

Plan for two distinct failure points: an input may disconnect, or FFmpeg itself may stop. FFmpeg’s protocol options include reconnect behavior for network errors and EOF in applicable cases, but the right options depend on the input protocol and installed build. Input reconnection does not necessarily restart a failed publishing process. Use a supervisor for process restarts, choose deliberate retry delays or limits, and retain logs. Consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation for the relevant input protocol’s reconnect options.
YouTube’s API distinguishes a broadcast—the watchable event—from a stream—the transmission configuration. For a continuous broadcast, the transmission must keep running, and the event and transmission need to be managed as related but distinct parts. See Google’s explanation of YouTube Live broadcasts and streams.
6. Test, monitor and troubleshoot
Run a realistic test first
Before promoting the radio, run a private or unlisted test with the actual playlist, visual, expected duration and host. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Check audio level and clipping, aspect ratio, stable video frames, encoding load, upload headroom, loop seams and how the process behaves after a restart. While it is live, review stream health and messages in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s testing and encoder guidance.
Common failure symptoms and fixes
- YouTube receives no video: Confirm the output includes a video stream and that a still-image input is configured to keep producing frames. A radio stream still needs video.
- Stream health degrades or publishing drops: Check sustained upload capacity, bitrate, host network stability and FFmpeg logs. Reduce the video bitrate or output demands to a level the connection can consistently deliver, then test again.
- FFmpeg stops after a file or feed ends: Check whether the input is actually endless and whether the playlist repeats as intended. Configure an appropriate loop or feed, and use a process supervisor to restart FFmpeg if the process exits.
- Input reconnects but YouTube remains offline: Input reconnect handling and output-process recovery are different. Check whether FFmpeg is still running and publishing; configure the supervisor to restart an exited process, then verify the broadcast in YouTube Studio.
- Audio has gaps, clicks or unexpected silence: Inspect the source files, playlist order, repeat behavior and transitions. Normalize mismatched formats or sample rates where appropriate and listen through the loop boundary.
- YouTube warns about or interrupts the stream for copyright: Review the matched content and rights documentation. If you are licensed, contact the rights owner about allowlisting your channel; a license does not necessarily prevent automated matching.
- The stream key may have been exposed: Replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the protected configuration used by FFmpeg.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep a machine and home connection running, StreamNeo is a cloud option for keeping uploaded videos live on YouTube. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer can be off. Each slot supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not live camera input. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
