Choose between a cloud VM and a managed service
A self-managed setup gives you control over the cloud machine, encoder, media files and restart process, but you are responsible for configuring and maintaining them. A managed service reduces that server work. Check YouTube Live eligibility and create an event
- Confirm the channel is verified and has not had a live-stream restriction during the previous 90 days. YouTube’s cited guidance also states that streamers must be at least 16.
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a scheduled or current stream. Choose the event settings appropriate to the channel and intended audience.
- Locate the event’s stream URL and stream key in Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to that event. Store it securely and do not publish it in a script, screenshot or public repository.

Select an India cloud region and plan the machine
Choose the cloud provider and region based on where your media is stored, the network path to YouTube ingest, availability of a machine that can encode your chosen format, and the provider’s compute and outbound-data charges. An India region can reduce the distance between the VM and locally stored source files, but it does not by itself guarantee a particular route or stream quality to YouTube.

- Google Cloud lists Mumbai (
asia-south1) for its Live Stream API and documents Mumbai and Delhi for Compute Engine. This does not mean every machine type or product is available in every region. - AWS identifies Mumbai and Hyderabad as India regions. Confirm that the required instance type and any encoding capabilities are available in the chosen region and zone.
Check the current region and product availability in the providers’ documentation: Google Cloud Live Stream API locations, Google Compute Engine regions and zones and AWS global infrastructure.
There is no universally correct VM size or reliable single monthly price for this setup. The needed machine depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, encoding method and whether hardware acceleration is used. Estimate costs using your selected region and machine, operating hours, storage and outbound transfer; consult Google Cloud pricing and the selected provider’s applicable pricing pages rather than assuming compute is the only recurring charge.

Prepare and store the ambient video and audio
Use media you have permission to stream. Ambient footage and sound may still be protected by copyright; a video being relaxing, freely viewable or already online does not establish permission to rebroadcast it. Keep the files available to the cloud encoder, either on storage attached to the VM or another storage service. The storage product and suitable retention arrangement depend on your workflow.
Before starting a long stream, confirm that the encoder can read the complete playlist or source file and that the audio is present, at a usable level and free of unintended gaps or abrupt changes. Test the actual files rather than relying only on a local preview.

Configure the encoder for YouTube
YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection. Use an encoder that can play or loop the source and send the chosen output continuously. Configure output resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate to match both the source and what the VM can sustain.
- Bitrate: YouTube’s recommendation for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps is 10 Mbps. Other resolutions, frame rates and codecs have their own recommendations; consult the current YouTube encoder settings table rather than applying 10 Mbps to every stream.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed 4 seconds.
- Protocol: Select RTMPS when supported by the encoder and the event’s ingest endpoint.
- Looping: Configure the media or playlist to repeat, and verify the transition between the end and beginning of a loop. A cloud VM does not automatically create a continuous playlist; this behavior comes from the encoder or playback workflow you configure.
The encoder’s bitrate and processing load both matter. A VM that cannot sustain the selected encoding workload or upload rate may produce dropped frames, interruptions or poor stream health. Start with a configuration supported by the chosen machine and test it before relying on it.

Connect the encoder, test, and start the stream
- In the encoder, enter the stream URL and stream key shown for the YouTube event. Keep the key private.
- Start playback and encoding. In Live Control Room, wait for YouTube to receive the feed and inspect the preview and stream-health messages.
- Check both picture and sound: confirm the intended resolution and frame rate, listen for audio, and watch for dropped frames, silence or playlist gaps.
- When the preview and health information are satisfactory, start the event in Live Control Room if it is not already live.
- Keep a monitoring and recovery plan for the VM, encoder and network connection. A continuous stream needs a way to detect a stopped process or lost ingest and restore it; the exact supervisor and failover design depends on your provider and encoder.
YouTube recommends testing the encoder before the stream and checking stream health. Its encoder guidance covers settings and stream checks.
Plan for archives, rights and long-running operation
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is not a promise that one continuous 24-hour session will produce a complete archive: the cited guidance does not specify the full archival outcome for a stream longer than 12 hours. If a complete replay matters, do not assume a single day-long event will create one; consider how shorter sessions fit your schedule and test the current behavior.
Keep the channel’s rights and monetization obligations in view as well as technical stability. A stream that stays online is not necessarily eligible for monetization: you still need rights to the video and audio, and the channel remains subject to YouTube’s policies, including its rules for reused content. Check YouTube’s current channel monetization policies and resolve rights for every asset before broadcasting.
Common problems and fixes
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that the encoder is running, the event’s stream URL and key were copied correctly, and the selected ingest protocol matches the endpoint. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Stream health reports dropped frames or unstable delivery: Check the VM’s available encoding capacity and sustained outbound connection. Lower the output workload or select a machine and configuration that can sustain it; verify with another test.
- Video arrives but sound is absent or wrong: Confirm the source file’s audio track and the encoder’s audio input and output settings, then check the Live Control Room preview with sound.
- The playlist stops or has a gap: Verify that looping is enabled in the playback workflow and that the cloud encoder can still access each file. Test the transition before leaving the stream unattended.
- The VM or encoder stops: Check provider and process logs, restore the encoder and verify that YouTube receives the feed again. For an always-on service, configure monitoring and a restart/recovery path rather than assuming a process will run indefinitely.
- No complete 24-hour archive appears: YouTube’s stated automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed complete 24-hour session. Plan around that limit instead of treating the missing archive as proof of an encoder fault.
