What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To keep a YouTube channel streaming around the clock, first make sure the channel is eligible, then send a continuous video feed from an encoder to YouTube’s Live Control Room. You can run that encoder on your own computer or let a cloud service loop uploaded videos. YouTube documents encoder workflows and recurring broadcasts, but that is not a guarantee that one live event will run indefinitely or remain available as a single archive.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its getting-started guidance also says livestreamers must be at least 16. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A video source and an encoder. The source may be a camera or other live production, or pre-recorded material played by an encoder. YouTube supports software encoders; dedicated hardware is optional, though YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your selected stream bitrate, plus headroom for any backup feed.
- A stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send content to your stream.
For a documentary channel, settle the programme and rights before going live. You are responsible for having the necessary rights to the video, music, archival footage, and other material you broadcast. A continuous loop does not make copyrighted or otherwise unauthorized content safe to stream. Review YouTube’s current policies and use material you own, have licensed, or are otherwise entitled to use.
Set up a continuous stream with your own encoder
1. Create or select the YouTube stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go Live.
- Choose the Stream workflow. Create a new stream or select a scheduled one, then open its stream settings.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Keep the key private; if it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings before continuing.
2. Configure the encoder
In your encoder, paste YouTube’s server URL into the server or destination field and the stream key into the key field. Select a protocol the encoder supports. YouTube recommends preparing encoders at least two hours before an event and starting them at least 15 minutes before a scheduled start; for a 24/7 channel, treat these as launch or maintenance-window guidance, not a recurring restart schedule.
Start the encoder and wait for the incoming feed preview to appear in Live Control Room. Confirm the picture and sound, then select Go live. To finish a broadcast, end it in Live Control Room and stop the encoder.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Choose RTMPS or HLS
| Protocol | When it fits | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | Your encoder supports RTMPS and you want the familiar RTMP workflow with encryption. | RTMPS is RTMP delivered over TLS/SSL. Reveal the RTMPS server URL in Live Control Room and enter it, with the stream key, in the encoder. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions. |
| HLS | Your encoder supports YouTube’s HLS ingest workflow and its segment requirements suit your production. | HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency than RTMP. YouTube specifies TS segments, 1–4 second segment duration, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions. |
4. Set video quality and keyframes
Choose a resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate that your encoder and measured upload connection can sustain. YouTube publishes recommended H.264 bitrate ranges and minimum-to-maximum ranges for AV1 and H.265; use the current table in YouTube’s encoder settings guide rather than assuming one bitrate suits every format. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
Higher resolution and frame rate require more bandwidth. A 24/7 stream also runs for long periods, so test the actual programme at the intended settings rather than choosing the highest available quality by default.

Plan bandwidth, testing, and recovery
Allow upload headroom
YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom beyond the combined bitrate of the primary and backup streams. Measure the connection where the encoder will operate and compare its sustained upload capacity—not just a brief peak—to the total bitrate you intend to send. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream.
Test the full programme and monitoring path
- Test audio and motion similar to the real broadcast; a static test screen will not reveal all issues in a documentary with music, narration, or scene changes.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before going live.
- Confirm viewers can access the stream on the channel page, watch page, and mobile devices.
- Monitor audio and picture after launch, and keep a written recovery procedure available to whoever operates the stream.
YouTube recommends testing the backup-encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable. Test your own recovery path before relying on it; a backup arrangement is not itself a guarantee against interruption. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Understand recurring broadcasts and archive limits
YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes creating a channel’s liveStream resource and binding broadcast resources to it so recurring events can reuse stream settings. That API model allows only one event live at a time; it describes broadcast management, not an indefinitely running event. See Google’s explanation of broadcasts and streams.
YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” The statement applies to streams under 12 hours; it does not promise a single automatic archive for a longer continuous stream. If preserving the complete programme matters, arrange and test a separate local or external recording strategy, and check YouTube’s current limits before planning long-run restarts or archive handling. The archive guidance is in YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No preview appears in Live Control Room | The encoder has not started sending, or the destination URL or stream key is incorrect. | Confirm the selected stream, protocol, server URL, and key match YouTube’s settings. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder. |
| The stream drops or becomes unstable | Available upload bandwidth is insufficient or the connection is disrupted. | Check the actual upload capacity against the primary-plus-backup bitrate and YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Lower the bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it; test the revised stream. |
| The viewer experiences a noticeable delay | The selected ingest path may have higher latency. | If using HLS, account for its segmented delivery and higher latency than RTMP. Check whether an encoder-supported RTMPS workflow better suits the production. |
| A long-running broadcast is missing a complete archive | The stream exceeded the documented under-12-hour automatic-archive condition. | Do not assume YouTube will create one complete archive for an over-12-hour stream. Use a tested separate recording plan if a full copy is essential. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube loop of uploaded videos rather than a camera-led live production, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 24/7 looping and playlists, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode and one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers. The first day is free with no card, once per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
StreamNeo is for uploaded video playback to YouTube, not camera-based live production or streaming to other platforms. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
