In OBS on Windows, use the stream URL and stream key shown for your broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Prefer the RTMPS URL when available. In OBS, select a YouTube service preset if your installed version offers one; otherwise choose a custom service and enter the URL and key in their respective fields. Do not use a guessed server address: the URL displayed for your stream is the one to copy, including for channels in India.
Before you configure OBS
Make sure your channel is eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the person livestreaming must be at least 16. These are YouTube account requirements, not OBS settings. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
On a channel with earlier broadcasts, YouTube Studio may reopen a previous stream’s settings and key. Check that the stream you select is the one you intend to use before copying its details.
Find the YouTube stream URL and key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live to open Live Control Room.
- Open Stream, then create a stream or select the scheduled stream you plan to broadcast.
- Copy the displayed Stream URL and Stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private; anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream. See Manage live stream settings and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Enter the details in OBS on Windows
- Open OBS and go to its streaming configuration. Menu names can vary by OBS version.
- If the installed version offers a YouTube preset, select it and enter the stream key when prompted.
- If there is no suitable preset, select the custom service option. Paste YouTube’s copied Stream URL into the server field and the copied Stream key into the stream-key field.
- Save or apply the settings, then start streaming from OBS.
Never paste the stream key into a public message, screenshot, or recording. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in OBS before your next broadcast.

RTMPS or RTMP?
Prefer RTMPS if your encoder supports it. YouTube defines RTMPS as “RTMP over a Transport Layer Security (TLS/SSL) connection” and recommends it for streams to YouTube Live. In Live Control Room, use the lock icon beside Stream URL to reveal and copy the RTMPS address. If OBS offers a YouTube RTMPS preset, select it and enter the key. Otherwise, use the RTMPS URL YouTube displays in the custom server field. Do not substitute a server address found elsewhere. Details are in YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
The official YouTube instructions reviewed for this setup do not identify a separate India-only ingest URL. For an Indian channel, copy the actual URL shown in Live Control Room rather than hard-coding an address. Account eligibility and the stability of your internet connection still matter.

Start the broadcast and go live
- Start streaming in OBS so it begins sending video and audio to YouTube.
- For a scheduled event, wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. When the preview is ready, select Go live there; starting OBS alone does not necessarily publish the scheduled event.
- To finish, select End Stream in Live Control Room and stop sending from OBS. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
Choose video and audio settings that fit your connection
The server URL and stream key establish the connection; they do not determine whether your upload connection can sustain the chosen quality. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion, choosing a bitrate your reliable upload connection can handle, and monitoring stream health. Its encoder can detect settings and transcode for viewers on different devices and networks. The figures below are YouTube’s published H.264 guidance, accessed in 2026—not India-specific thresholds or guarantees.

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as video codec options, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds that should not exceed 4 seconds. For audio, it lists AAC or MP3, 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1 audio; its advanced guidance specifies 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1. For SDR, it lists Rec. 709. These are encoder recommendations and specifications, not changes required just to enter a server URL and key. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Fix common connection problems
- OBS will not connect: Copy the URL and key again from the intended stream in Live Control Room. Check for a changed stream or reset key, and update OBS if either has changed.
- RTMPS SSL error: Confirm that OBS is using the RTMPS URL, not an RTMP URL. YouTube suggests trying port 443 if the URL otherwise appears correct; use the URL YouTube provides and change the port only if needed.
- Connection timeout: Recheck the displayed server URL and confirm that your installed encoder supports RTMPS if you selected that protocol.
- No live preview: Make sure OBS is sending the stream, then wait for the preview in Live Control Room. For a scheduled event, select Go live there after the preview appears.
- Unstable video or dropped frames: Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to fit the stable upload capacity available to the streaming computer. Run a representative test and monitor YouTube’s stream health; its recommended bitrate does not guarantee that a particular connection can sustain it.
Protect or reset a stream key
Treat the key as a credential. A channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room: open Stream, find Stream key, select Reset, then copy the new key into OBS. Editors and viewers cannot reset the key. If you reset it, the old saved key in OBS must be replaced or the encoder will no longer authenticate. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
