Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, choose settings the computer can sustain, measure upload speed at the location, and monitor the Live Control Room. Keep a separate copy of the video: YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive.
What this setup can—and cannot—do
This is an encoder workflow: the desktop runs software that sends a prepared video feed to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key YouTube provides. The computer, encoder, power, internet connection and YouTube ingest are all potential failure points. A successful test confirms only that the setup worked during that test; it does not establish indefinite uptime.
For a stream intended to remain live continuously, keep the desktop and encoder running, monitor the broadcast, and have a recovery plan. If retaining a replay matters, plan separately for recording: staying live and preserving an archive are different requirements.
Check the channel and create the YouTube broadcast
- Confirm eligibility. YouTube’s published prerequisites include a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation of live streaming may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube live streaming tips and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule the broadcast and choose the encoder workflow. Follow Studio’s current prompts for the event and its visibility.
- Copy the connection details. Use the stream URL and stream key displayed for the broadcast in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. Reset it in Studio if it is exposed. YouTube explains stream settings at Manage live stream settings.
Choose settings the refurbished desktop can sustain
Start with the weakest link: the desktop’s sustained encoding capacity, the measured upload speed, and the quality viewers actually need. YouTube transcodes live streams for playback, so sending a higher-resolution feed than your computer and connection can reliably manage is not automatically beneficial. Test with the actual yoga footage, including its movement and audio; an idle desktop or static test image is not a meaningful load test.

| H.264 output profile | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube maximum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published H.264 settings, not a guarantee that a particular refurbished PC can encode them. YouTube also specifies constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Check the current guidance at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- If the encoder struggles, test 720p30 before increasing resolution or frame rate. Watch for dropped frames, encoder overload, audio problems and overheating over a sustained run.
- Set the video and audio bitrate to match the profile and keep the combined stream bitrate within the available upload capacity.
- Use RTMPS if the encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as the encrypted version of RTMP; details are at Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
Measure upload speed and reduce local-network risk
Measure upload—not just download—speed at the desktop’s actual location. Repeat at the time when household or office internet use is busiest, because other users and devices can reduce the bandwidth available to the stream. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom above the total streaming bitrate and warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. Read YouTube’s streaming tips.

- Prefer Ethernet when practical. A wired desktop-to-router connection can avoid some local Wi-Fi instability, but it cannot fix a provider outage or weak upstream service.
- Assess backup internet realistically. A second connection can help only if it is independently available and configured to take over. Check service and actual upload performance at your address; there is no basis here for recommending a particular Indian provider or plan.
- Plan for power interruptions. A UPS is an optional resilience measure, not a YouTube requirement or uptime guarantee. Size it for the combined desktop and router load and the outage duration you need to cover. Confirm that it supports the equipment and that its battery is serviceable.
Test the full broadcast before relying on it
- Connect the encoder using YouTube’s stream URL and key, select the intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval, and prepare the same yoga video and audio you plan to use.
- Start the encoder early enough to inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages before the planned public start.
- Check the watch page on the devices viewers are likely to use, including a phone. Confirm that the video plays, audio is audible and synchronized, and the intended visibility is correct.
- Run a sustained test long enough to reveal heat, encoding or connection problems. Keep an eye on the computer, encoder and Live Control Room; YouTube advises continuous quality monitoring.
- If you have configured a backup encoder, test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirm that the player rolls over. This tests a configured backup; it does not apply to a single-encoder setup.

Keep the video and any replay safe
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not rely on a single uninterrupted day-long broadcast for a replay. Keep the original yoga video, and if archive retention matters, make a local recording and verify that the recording file grows during a test. Check available disk space first; YouTube also recommends verifying local archive integrity. See Archive live streams.

Review the video’s music, footage and other material for copyright permission before broadcasting. YouTube’s live-stream tips and settings also cover broadcast controls. Set auto-start and auto-stop intentionally in Live Control Room and test their effect before relying on them. If you plan multiple broadcasts rather than one continuous session, check current Studio limits and settings and decide how to handle the transition; neither seamless transitions nor indefinite uptime are guaranteed. For platform errors, consult Live streaming error messages.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder will not connect | Stream URL or key, event configuration, or live-stream eligibility | Confirm the selected event and connection details in Studio, check channel eligibility, and replace the key if it may have been exposed. |
| Dropped frames or poor stream health | Upload capacity, competing network use, or an unstable connection | Recheck upload speed during busy hours, restore the recommended headroom, reduce the output bitrate if needed, and try Ethernet where practical. |
| Encoder overload, stutter or overheating | Desktop cannot sustain the chosen output | Test a lower resolution or frame rate, close unnecessary workloads, and repeat a sustained test while monitoring the machine. |
| Stream stops during a power or ISP interruption | Local power or internet service | Check whether the router and PC lost power or whether the connection failed. A properly sized UPS or independently available backup connection may reduce some local risks, but neither guarantees continuity. |
| No replay appears after a day-long stream | Broadcast exceeded YouTube’s archive capture window | Do not depend on a stream longer than 12 hours for an archive; retain the original and make a verified local recording if needed. |
