Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIn OBS, configure YouTube delivery and local recording separately: open Settings → Output, set Output Mode to Advanced, then choose a streaming encoder and a recording encoder. For YouTube, use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; choose recording quality settings for the archive you need and the CPU, GPU, and disk space available. Test the full setup before leaving it unattended: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured in its automatic archive.
Configure OBS output for streaming and recording
OBS can use one set of encoder settings for both outputs or give the live stream and local recording their own settings. A separate recording encoder gives you more control over local quality and file size, but can add system load. Start by choosing the output resolution and frame rate your computer can sustain continuously; a higher setting is not better if it causes dropped frames or an unstable stream.
- In OBS, open Settings → Output.
- Set Output Mode to Advanced.
- Use the Streaming section for YouTube ingestion settings.
- Use the Recording section to choose whether the local file uses the stream settings or an independent encoder and quality level.
- Click Apply, then run a representative test before relying on the configuration.
Encoder choices and options vary by operating system, GPU, and driver. Use an encoder and codec actually available in your OBS installation and supported by the YouTube stream setup.

Rate control, keyframes, and codec
YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS delivery and H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1. It recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Its bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so do not apply H.264 figures to HEVC or AV1.

For H.264, YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists these examples:
| Ingestion resolution and frame rate | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 or 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s H.264 guidance figures, not a guarantee that a particular connection or computer can sustain them. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings page for the current recommendations for your chosen codec and output mode: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Resolution, frame rate, and upload capacity
Match the live output to the material and what your system can encode reliably. YouTube recommends testing with representative movement and audio, checking upload speed, and leaving about 20% network headroom above the stream bitrate. If the connection cannot keep up, lower the bitrate rather than treating a brief speed-test result as evidence of continuous capacity. OBS’s troubleshooting guide also recommends lowering bitrate when the connection is insufficient: OBS stream connection troubleshooting.

Stream key and preview
In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube or the appropriate YouTube service option, and enter the ingest details and stream key provided for your broadcast. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel. Confirm the preview and stream health in YouTube Studio before depending on a long session. Official setup and bitrate guidance is available at YouTube’s live encoder settings page.
Choose local recording settings
Same as stream or a separate recording encoder
OBS’s Same as stream recording preset reuses the streaming encoder settings. It is simpler and avoids configuring a distinct recording encoder, but OBS says recordings set to Same as stream cannot be paused. A separate recording encoder lets you optimize the archive independently, though it can use additional CPU or GPU resources. See OBS’s guides to streaming and recording and recording output.
Quality-oriented recording starting points
For a separate local recording, OBS publishes encoder-specific baseline examples in its Advanced Recording Settings guide. These are starting points intended to match Simple output presets, not universal optimal settings or a promise of unattended stability.

Find the settings applicable to the encoder your system exposes in the OBS Advanced Recording Settings Guide. A lower CQP, CRF, or ICQ value generally favors higher quality and larger files; test the actual output and storage growth on your system.
Quality presets and storage implications
OBS describes High Quality as high quality at medium file size. Indistinguishable aims for higher quality, with larger files and possible performance impact on older or weaker hardware. Lossless uses the CPU encoder and can produce around 7 GB per minute, according to OBS’s 2023 guide—far too large for most continuous recording plans. Choose a preset with both system load and the duration of the archive in mind. OBS explains these options in its Recording Encoder Presets Guide.

Hardware versus software encoding
Hardware encoding shifts much of the work to specialized GPU hardware and may help reduce CPU load. OBS cautions that older hardware encoders can produce lower image quality at the same bitrate than software x264 using the default veryfast preset. The practical choice depends on your hardware and whether the system can stream and record together without overload. Check OBS’s hardware encoding overview and test the exact encoder available on your machine.

Plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive limitation
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not assume a single 24-hour-plus event will leave a complete YouTube archive. If preserving the full feed matters, record locally, confirm that the file is growing, and plan storage capacity and file handling before leaving the stream unattended. YouTube’s current guidance is on its Archive live streams page.
OBS can record while streaming, but the creator remains responsible for disk capacity and checking the result. YouTube also recommends checking local archive files. There is no universally guaranteed OBS rotation schedule established here; plan and test any event rotation and recovery process rather than assuming it will produce a complete platform archive.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test and monitor before leaving the loop unattended
- Run a test stream with the same resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and audio you intend to use.
- Check YouTube’s preview and stream health, and watch for dropped frames, connection warnings, and audio problems.
- Confirm that upload capacity has about 20% headroom over the selected bitrate under realistic network conditions.
- Start local recording and verify that the file grows; after the test, open the file and check that its video and audio are usable.
- Estimate storage for the intended recording duration from the observed file growth, then leave additional space for unexpected length or temporary files.
- Keep an eye on OBS status and system load during the test. Automatic reconnect can help after a disconnect, but does not guarantee that the PC, power, network, media source, or stream stays available.
YouTube’s encoder guidance explicitly advises testing before going live: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. OBS documents its reconnect control in the OBS Studio overview; it is one recovery aid, not an uptime guarantee.

Troubleshoot common failures
YouTube reports a weak or unstable connection
Likely cause: The bitrate is too high for sustained upload capacity, or the connection is fluctuating. Fix: Lower the stream bitrate, test again, and preserve the recommended network headroom. Prefer a stable wired connection where practical, while recognizing it cannot fix an unstable ISP or guarantee uptime.
OBS reports encoding overload or the video stutters
Likely cause: The selected resolution, frame rate, encoder preset, or simultaneous recording workload exceeds the computer’s capacity. Fix: Test streaming without the separate recording encoder, reduce output resolution or frame rate, or try an available hardware encoder. Re-test the complete stream-and-record setup before leaving it running.
The recording is too large or the disk fills
Likely cause: The recording quality setting generates more data than the available storage can hold, or Lossless was selected. Fix: Stop using Lossless for continuous recording, choose a more manageable quality setting, and estimate capacity from a test recording’s actual file growth. Do not start an unattended recording without enough free disk space.
The YouTube archive is missing or incomplete
Likely cause: The live event exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour automatic archive guidance. Fix: Maintain a local recording if a complete copy matters and verify the file. Test any planned event rotation rather than assuming it will preserve the whole feed.
