What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes. A Mac mini can run encoder software that sends a continuous video feed to YouTube Live. To keep it running with the display off, prevent the Mac from sleeping, configure the encoder with your YouTube stream details, and test the Mac’s network, recording, and recovery behavior before relying on it. This is a do-it-yourself setup—not a guarantee of uninterrupted uptime: power loss, network outages, or an encoder failure can still interrupt the broadcast.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is eligible for live streaming. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- A Mac mini with compatible encoder software and the video and audio you want to broadcast.
- A stable internet connection with enough measured upload capacity for your total streaming bitrate.
- Enough local storage for recordings if you plan to keep a backup archive.
- A way to manage the Mac mini remotely if you intend to run it without a connected display.
A software encoder is a sensible starting point for one prerecorded feed. If you need multiple cameras, dedicated video or audio inputs, or a production setup beyond that, compare hardware encoders by their supported inputs, ingest protocols, codecs, monitoring, recovery features, Mac compatibility, and cost. YouTube’s verified encoder list identifies products that meet its verification criteria; YouTube says those products are not made by YouTube, and verification is not an endorsement. Confirm current product specifications before choosing an encoder.
Set up the YouTube live stream
- Enable live streaming. Check the channel’s current eligibility and activate live streaming. If this is your first activation, allow for YouTube’s stated setup time of up to 24 hours.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or schedule an event. For an event, YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead; its live-streaming tips also recommend starting the encoder 15 minutes before a scheduled event.
- Copy the stream URL and key. Find these in the stream’s settings in YouTube Studio. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Reset it in YouTube Studio if you think it has been exposed.
- Connect the encoder. In the encoder’s stream settings, select YouTube if it offers that option, or enter the YouTube stream URL and key as separate fields. Select the correct stream or event in Live Control Room where the encoder or YouTube workflow requires it.
Keep the stream key private. Avoid putting it in a public screenshot, video, shared document, or message, and do not leave it visible while recording a tutorial.
Choose video settings and check upload capacity
Choose a resolution and frame rate that suit the footage and the connection. Then use YouTube’s current live encoder settings and bitrate guidance for that combination, rather than copying a bitrate from an unrelated setup. Available codec and ingest options can change; YouTube’s general guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS and supported video and audio codecs.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Use constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube’s general encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Measure upload, not download. Compare the actual outbound capacity with the combined bitrate of all streams being sent, including a backup stream if you use one.
- Leave margin. YouTube recommends 20% of upload-bandwidth headroom above the total streaming bitrate. A shared connection may deliver less capacity to the Mac than the internet plan’s headline speed suggests.
There is no single upload-speed figure that applies to every continuous stream: the requirement depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, and whether you send a primary and backup stream. Test the actual connection at the time and place the Mac will run. A wired Ethernet connection can be a practical way to reduce dependence on Wi-Fi, but it is optional, not a YouTube requirement.
Keep the Mac mini awake with the display off
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Energy on the desktop Mac mini.
- If available on your Mac and macOS release, turn on Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off.
- Leave the display free to turn off if you do not need it. The goal is to keep the Mac and encoder awake, not to keep the monitor lit.
- If the Mac will run headless, set up and test remote management before disconnecting the display.
Energy settings vary by Mac model and macOS release. Apple’s Mac mini server guidance warns: “If your Mac mini goes to sleep, currently running tasks and processes may be interrupted.” Preventing or delaying sleep can increase power use.

Plan for power loss, restarts, and recovery
If the Energy settings on your Mac offer an option to start up after power is restored, enable it if you want the Mac to boot again after an outage. Apple’s Mac mini server guidance recommends arranging startup after power loss. This setting only addresses starting the computer; it does not guarantee that the encoder will relaunch or that YouTube will resume the same broadcast.
Test the entire recovery sequence before leaving the setup unattended: interrupt power safely, restore it, and check whether the Mac starts, the encoder opens, the correct stream is selected, and YouTube receives the feed. If any step needs manual intervention, plan for that limitation. A UPS can provide short-term power during some interruptions, but it cannot prevent a longer outage or network failure.

YouTube says connectivity disruptions can break a stream. An encoder’s reconnect behavior and any backup-encoder failover must be tested rather than assumed. Do not promise yourself or viewers uninterrupted uptime based only on the Mac’s sleep settings.
Test the broadcast and local recording
- Use representative video and audio, then start the encoder early enough to resolve setup issues before the intended broadcast.
- Confirm that a preview appears in YouTube Live Control Room and that the intended stream page is correct.
- Check stream health and watch for connection or encoding warnings while the test is running.
- If recording locally, confirm that the recording file is growing and that the destination has enough free space for the planned run.
- If you use a backup encoder, test the failover path instead of relying on it to work in an emergency.
Long recordings can consume substantial disk space. Choose storage based on the recording bitrate, how long you intend to retain files, sustained write capability, and compatibility with your particular Mac mini. YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup, but its guidance does not specify a required drive type or capacity. Decide how recordings will be rotated or deleted before storage fills up.

Will YouTube archive a 24-hour stream?
Do not count on YouTube saving one complete replay of a continuous broadcast. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; it also warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Those statements are not a guarantee that every shorter stream will produce a complete archive, either. Keep and verify a local recording if you need a dependable copy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The stream stops when the display turns off. | The Mac may be sleeping, or the encoder process may have stopped. | Check the desktop Energy setting for preventing automatic sleep while the display is off, then verify the encoder remains active with the display off. |
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed. | The stream URL or key may be wrong, stale, or entered in the wrong field; the stream may not be selected as expected. | Recheck the stream details in YouTube Studio, enter the URL and key in the matching encoder fields, and confirm the correct stream in Live Control Room. Reset the key if it may have been exposed. |
| The feed is unstable or YouTube reports connection issues. | Available upload capacity may be below the total bitrate, particularly on a shared connection. | Measure outbound capacity, reduce the encoder bitrate or choose less demanding video settings using YouTube’s current guidance, and leave the recommended 20% headroom. Test Ethernet if Wi-Fi stability is a concern. |
| The Mac restarts after an outage but the broadcast does not return. | Starting the computer does not necessarily relaunch the encoder or restore its session. | Test each recovery step separately and arrange the encoder’s startup and reconnect behavior only if the software supports it. Keep a manual recovery plan for steps that do not happen automatically. |
| The local recording is missing or incomplete. | The encoder may not have recorded, the destination may have filled, or the recording may have stopped with the process. | Check during a test that the file grows, inspect available storage, and plan recording rotation. Do not rely on a YouTube archive for a stream that runs beyond 12 hours. |
| The setup cannot be managed after the monitor is disconnected. | Remote access may not have been configured or tested. | Set up and verify a remote management method while the display is still connected. |
