In OBS, open Edit > Advanced Audio Properties and choose an Audio Monitoring mode for each source. Use Monitor Off when the sound should reach the stream but does not need local playback, Monitor Only when you need to hear it locally but not send it to the stream, or Monitor and Output when you need both. Then select the intended monitoring device in OBS and test the actual routing before leaving the stream unattended.

Choose the right monitoring mode for each source

Audio monitoring is configured per source. The choice controls whether OBS plays a source through the configured local monitoring device and whether the source is included in stream output.

Mode Heard locally Included in stream output Use it when
Monitor Off No Yes, if the source is otherwise routed to the stream You want the audio on stream but do not need to hear it through OBS locally.
Monitor Only Yes No An operator needs to listen locally, but this source should not be part of the stream output.
Monitor and Output Yes Yes You need both local playback and stream audio.

These settings do not by themselves make a stream reliable or continuous. OBS’s mixer control plays a source through the monitoring device configured in OBS; it is a local audio-routing choice, not an uptime feature. OBS Audio Mixer Guide

Set up and verify monitoring in OBS

  1. Identify the audio source. Confirm which source supplies each sound and that it appears in the OBS mixer. If you add a device as a scene-specific Audio Input/Output Capture source, check whether that same device is also enabled globally.
  2. Choose a mode. Open Edit > Advanced Audio Properties. In the Audio Monitoring column, select Monitor Off, Monitor Only, or Monitor and Output for each source as needed.
  3. Select the monitoring device. In OBS audio settings, choose the device you intend to listen through. Connect the intended headphones or speakers and play the source. OBS describes monitoring as playing the source through this configured device. Menu wording and device behavior can vary by operating system and OBS version, so verify the result on the machine you will use.
  4. Check meters and listen. Confirm that the mixer meters move when audio is present, then listen to the monitoring output. The OBS Project advises listening at the device and again inside OBS using Audio Monitoring. OBS Audio Mixer Guide
  5. Make a representative test recording. Use the intended scene and routing, play back the recording, and separately confirm that local monitoring is audible as intended. OBS recommends recording and listening before going live; meter activity alone cannot confirm that the audio sounds right.

Prevent echo and feedback

A common cause of echo is capturing the same device globally and again as a scene-specific source. OBS warns that selecting a device in both Settings > Audio and an Audio Input/Output Capture source can cause echo; if you use the scene-specific source, disable the duplicate global device. Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If you still hear a hollow duplicate, trace the signal path: check for duplicate captures and make sure the monitoring output is not being fed back into another OBS audio input. Test the corrected routing with both local listening and a recording.

Set levels without treating meter references as a loudness target

OBS defines dBFS against digital full scale and warns that recorded or streamed audio above 0 dBFS can clip. Its technical guide lists an Alignment Level of -20 dBFS and a Permitted Maximum Level of -9 dBFS; these are meter-reference values, not universal programme loudness targets for every children’s video. Keep the signal below 0 dBFS and judge it by listening as well as watching meters. OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details

The OBS Audio Mixer Guide describes green as a broad zone for background music and effects, yellow for speech or other content depending on the mix, and red as close to clipping. Two sources that look similarly loud on the meters may not sound equally loud to viewers, so check actual playback rather than relying on color alone. OBS Audio Mixer Guide

What this setup does—and does not—cover for a 24/7 stream

Monitoring settings determine local listening and source output; they do not supply a 24/7 preset or guarantee that OBS, the computer, or the stream will remain online. OBS’s cited format guidance covers local recording formats, not a continuous-stream uptime configuration. Hardware, operating system, OBS version, platform routing, and restart or failover needs vary, so test the finished setup on the machine and configuration that will actually run the stream. Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep uploaded children’s videos looping on a YouTube channel without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on; uploads stream as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.

StreamNeo is not an OBS monitoring control: choose it for cloud playback of uploaded videos, not to change how a local OBS source is monitored. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
