On Windows 10 or Windows 11, go to Start > Settings > Apps > Default apps. Select the current app beside Music player, then choose iTunes. Test the change by double-clicking an audio file. If some formats still open elsewhere, assign iTunes to those file extensions individually.
Apple’s current Windows guidance distinguishes iTunes from the newer Apple Music app, so first confirm which application you actually need.
Set iTunes as the default music player
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Default apps.
- Under Music player, select the application currently shown.
- Choose iTunes.
This is Apple’s documented route for Windows 10 or later. Menu labels can vary slightly by Windows build, language, and installation. See Apple’s iTunes instructions and Microsoft’s Default apps guidance.

Assign iTunes to specific file types
Use this method when you want particular formats—rather than every registered audio type—to open in iTunes.
- Open Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- Search for a file extension, such as
.mp3. - Select the application currently associated with that extension.
- Choose iTunes.
- Repeat for any other formats you use.
Common formats include .mp3, .m4a, .aac, .wav, .aiff, .aif, and, where supported, .m4p. The available choices depend on the installed iTunes version and whether it has registered itself as a handler for that extension. Protected or unusual files may not behave like ordinary audio files.
Use “Open with” for one file type
You do not have to make iTunes the general default. To change the association from a file itself:

- Right-click a music file.
- Select Open with > Choose another app.
- Select iTunes.
- Enable Always use this app to open [file type] files.
- Select OK.
This is useful when iTunes appears in the context-menu list but not under the general Music player category, or when you want only one format to use iTunes. Apple also documents opening an audio file with iTunes without making it the default.
If iTunes is not listed
- Confirm that iTunes is installed.
- Open iTunes once, close it, and return to Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- Search for the exact extension you want to change.
- Try the right-click Open with > Choose another app method.
- If iTunes remains unavailable, repair or reinstall it through Apple’s official Windows distribution route, including the Apple support page for Windows apps.
iTunes may be installed but not registered for a particular extension. Alternatively, the application you are looking for may now be Apple Music. On supported current Windows PCs, Apple identifies Apple Music—not iTunes—as the app for listening to and managing a music library.

Apple says users who previously used iTunes for music should use Apple Music on supported PCs. iTunes remains relevant for podcasts, audiobooks, older workflows, and computers that do not meet the requirements for Apple’s newer dedicated apps. See Apple’s Windows app overview and its iTunes guide.

Default playback is not the same as importing
Changing Windows’ default player only tells Windows which application should open a supported file or link. It does not:

- Move or copy the original file.
- Subscribe you to Apple Music.
- Change your audio output device.
- Transfer music to an iPhone or iPod.
- Make every browser-based streaming service open in iTunes.
To add files manually in iTunes, choose File > Add File to Library or File > Add Folder to Library. You can also drag files into the iTunes window. Depending on your preferences, iTunes may store a reference to the original location rather than copy the file. If you later move or rename that original, playback can fail.
To have iTunes copy added files into its media folder, open Edit > Preferences > Advanced and enable Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library. The original remains in its existing location while iTunes creates its copy. Apple explains these options in its guide to importing existing media.

Internet radio and browser streaming
Apple’s iTunes documentation describes setting iTunes as the default internet-radio player. In practice, Windows associations apply to registered file types, link types, and protocols. They do not force every music website or streaming service in a browser to launch iTunes. Browser-based services generally remain in the browser or use their own Windows application.

Return to Settings > Apps > Default apps. Select the Music player category or search for each affected file extension, then choose another installed application. Changing the default again does not alter your music files or iTunes library.

Can I set iTunes as the default on Windows 11?
Yes, if iTunes is installed and registered as an available handler. Use Settings > Apps > Default apps, then choose iTunes for the Music player category or individual extensions.

Why does Apple Music appear instead of iTunes?
Apple Music is Apple’s current Windows app for music-library playback and management on supported PCs. Choose iTunes only when you specifically need its legacy, podcast, audiobook, or compatibility workflows.
Why does iTunes open some files but not others?
Windows assigns defaults by extension, and iTunes may not be registered for every format. Set the desired extensions individually and check whether the file is supported.
Can I open a song in iTunes without making it the default?
Yes. Right-click the file, choose Open with, and select iTunes without enabling the “Always use this app” option.
Will this make online music open in iTunes?
Not generally. The Windows association affects supported files and registered links or protocols, not every streaming website running in a browser.
