For YouTube H.264 at 30 fps, Google’s current live-encoder guidance lists 3 Mbps for 360p, 5 Mbps for 480p, 8 Mbps for 720p and 10 Mbps for 1080p. Leave at least 20% upload headroom beyond the stream’s total bitrate, including audio, and test during the hours your church broadcasts. If your connection cannot sustain that margin, lower the resolution and bitrate.
Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain
A live stream uses your connection’s outbound capacity. Download speed is not a useful substitute: Google notes that inbound bandwidth is often higher than outbound upload and advises testing realistically. Run an upload-speed test on the connection the streaming computer will use, at the time of day the service normally goes live. A brief peak is not proof that the connection can sustain a stream.
YouTube’s live-encoder recommendations for H.264 at 30 fps are video bitrates. Audio and transport overhead add to the total. YouTube also recommends leaving 20% room in available upload bandwidth; treat that as a minimum planning margin, not a guarantee against fluctuations.
| YouTube output | Recommended H.264 video bitrate | Practical fit |
|---|---|---|
| 360p30 | 3 Mbps | Starting point when upload is constrained; check that faces, lyrics or signs remain legible. |
| 480p30 | 5 Mbps | Consider if 360p lacks needed detail and sustained upload has sufficient margin. |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | Use only when the connection reliably supports the complete stream plus headroom. |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | Requires more sustained upload capacity; do not select it just because the camera records at 1080p. |
These are Google / YouTube Help recommendations for YouTube live ingestion; the current pages were checked in 2026 and do not show a publication year. They are not measurements of an Indian ISP or a guarantee for your church. Scene motion, encoder, shared network use and service-time conditions affect what works.

Translate the target into an upload requirement
Count video and audio together, then allow at least 20% additional available upload capacity. For example, 3 Mbps video plus 128 kbps audio is about 3.13 Mbps before transport overhead. With 20% room, the stream calls for roughly 3.76 Mbps of sustained available upload as a calculated planning minimum; more is sensible if the connection varies or other devices upload at the same time. This is arithmetic from the target settings, not a measured result or guarantee.
If the tested connection cannot support the target with margin throughout the normal streaming window, choose a lower video bitrate and resolution. For a mostly static pulpit, a lower resolution may remain acceptable; camera movement and busy scenes can make compression more visible. Check the result on an ordinary viewer’s phone or computer, especially for distant faces and projected text.

Configure FFmpeg for YouTube live ingestion
The example below reads a video file in real time and sends H.264 video with AAC audio to an RTMPS ingest endpoint. It illustrates a 360p30 bitrate target; it does not resize the input. If the source is not already the intended dimensions, add an appropriate scale filter. Replace the endpoint and key with the values shown in your YouTube live-control setup.
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 3000k -maxrate 3000k -bufsize 6000k
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
YouTube’s live-encoder guidance specifies H.264, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio and a 2-second keyframe interval. The example uses a 60-frame GOP at 30 fps to make the keyframe interval two seconds, and constrains the x264 rate with matching target and maximum rates. FFmpeg’s -b:v sets video bitrate and -b:a sets audio bitrate. Rate-control behavior depends on the encoder: do not assume these flags behave identically with every codec or build.

For the same illustrative settings at other YouTube 30 fps targets, change the bitrate and buffer values as follows, and set the output dimensions to match your intended resolution:
| Target | -b:v and -maxrate |
-bufsize |
|---|---|---|
| 480p30 | 5000k |
10000k |
| 720p30 | 8000k |
16000k |
These are example encoder values based on YouTube’s recommended video bitrates, not tested network results. Check that your FFmpeg build has the chosen encoder and protocol with the applicable local help, for example ffmpeg -h encoder=libx264. FFmpeg documents its options at ffmpeg Documentation and ffmpeg-all Documentation.

Use the right input mode
-re is appropriate here because FFmpeg is reading a file and should feed it at real-time speed. FFmpeg cautions against imposing a low read rate on a real capture device or other live input; doing so can cause packet loss. For a live camera or capture source, use the input’s normal real-time behavior instead of blindly copying this file-playback command.
Protect the stream key
Your stream key grants access to the ingest stream. Do not publish it, place it in a public script repository or share a command containing the real key. Use YouTube’s actual ingest address and key for the scheduled broadcast, and follow YouTube’s current live-stream and copyright requirements for the material you show.

Test before the service and monitor the stream
- Measure the real connection. Test sustained upload over the same wired or Wi-Fi connection and at roughly the same time as the church service. Account for other people and devices using the network.
- Start conservatively. Choose the lowest resolution that keeps essential details readable, using YouTube’s bitrate guidance as a starting point rather than a fixed rule.
- Run a representative test. Check speech and music levels, camera movement, text legibility and stream stability from a viewer’s device. A static test image will not reveal how motion affects the picture.
- Watch stream health during the event. If the connection becomes unstable, reduce the video target or resolve competing uploads; increasing the target bitrate will make a capacity problem worse.
Account for a data cap separately
Upload speed and monthly data allowance are different constraints. At a sustained 1 Mbps, a stream uses about 10.8 decimal GB over 24 hours before overhead. Estimate data by multiplying the total bitrate in Mbps by the streaming hours, then by about 0.45 GB per hour per Mbps. Include video, audio and overhead, and compare the estimate with your provider’s current fair-use and monthly data terms. The relevant provider and plan are not specified here, so no particular Indian broadband cap or continuous-use policy can be assumed.
Troubleshoot common bitrate problems
- Stream drops or buffers although the plan advertises high speed: advertised speed may describe download, not sustained upload. Measure upload during the service window, include audio and overhead, and lower the target if the margin is inadequate.
- Connection is fine in a speed test but unstable live: a short test may miss variation or competing household uploads. Test for longer under realistic conditions and reserve more capacity than the 20% minimum when the line fluctuates.
- Picture looks soft or text is hard to read: bitrate and resolution are a trade-off. Test 480p or 720p only if upload supports its target plus headroom; also check camera focus and how small the text appears on a phone.
- FFmpeg rejects an encoder or output URL: confirm the installed build supports
libx264and the selected protocol, inspectffmpeg -h encoder=libx264, and check the ingest URL format and stream key against YouTube’s current setup. - Data runs out despite a stable stream: a low bitrate still accumulates substantial use when streamed continuously. Estimate usage from total bitrate and duration, then verify the provider’s actual plan terms.
