Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIn OBS, open Settings → Output and set Video Bitrate. Then choose your stream’s resolution and frame rate under Settings → Video, and use YouTube’s live-ingest recommendation for that combination and your encoder codec. For H.264, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 8 Mbps for either 720p setting. Your connection must sustain the bitrate with room to spare; a published target is not a guarantee that your upload will be stable.
Where to set bitrate in OBS
- Open Settings → Output. In Simple output mode, set the streaming Video Bitrate field directly. OBS notes that the right value depends on your upload speed and the streaming service’s limits. If you use Advanced output mode, check the streaming output settings there.
- Set the stream’s resolution and frame rate. Go to Settings → Video. Choose Output (Scaled) Resolution for the resolution sent to YouTube and set Common FPS Value for the output frame rate.
- Match bitrate to the actual ingest codec, resolution and frame rate. Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings table for the codec OBS will send. The H.264 values below are live-ingest recommendations, not the separate encoding guidance for prerecorded uploads. YouTube’s live encoder settings also lists separate recommendations for AV1 and H.265.
- Use CBR and set keyframes to two seconds. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for live ingest and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Check your upload capacity, then test. Leave bandwidth headroom and test with representative audio and motion. Watch the Live Control Room preview, stream health and messages before and during the event. If the connection is unstable or frames drop, lower the bitrate and reassess the connection.
H.264 bitrate recommendations for YouTube Live
These are YouTube’s live-stream ingest recommendations for H.264, accessed October 3, 2026. They are starting points for the specified output settings—not universal settings for every stream or connection.
| OBS output resolution | Frame rate | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p | 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p | 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p | 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p | 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
Use the recommendation for the ingest codec you actually send. Do not apply these H.264 figures automatically to AV1 or H.265; check the matching row in YouTube’s current live encoder guidance. Higher output resolution or frame rate may call for a different bitrate, but a lower stable setting is preferable to a target your connection cannot maintain.
How much upload speed should you leave available?
YouTube advises: “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” Its guidance also says the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth. OBS’s troubleshooting guide offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when setting bitrate against upload speed. Treat that as an estimate, not a stability guarantee: available capacity can fluctuate, and other devices or applications may share the connection. See YouTube’s network setup tips and OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For example, do not select a bitrate just because a speed test briefly showed enough upload capacity. Test the connection under conditions similar to the event, including any normal household or workplace network use. If your connection does not reliably support the recommended bitrate with headroom, reduce the OBS bitrate or choose a lower output resolution or frame rate, then test again.
Test the stream before going live
- Start a test stream using the same OBS scene, encoder, audio and motion you expect during the event.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and check the preview, stream health and any status messages. Allow time for the preview and health information to appear.
- Watch OBS for dropped frames or connection warnings. OBS explains: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server is not stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.”
- If you see dropped frames or poor stream health, lower the bitrate. If needed, reduce resolution or frame rate as well, then run another representative test. Consult the OBS troubleshooting steps and YouTube’s live streaming tips.
Common bitrate problems and fixes
Dropped frames or an unstable connection
The bitrate may exceed what your connection can sustain, or the upload may be unstable or shared. Lower the bitrate and test again; if necessary, reduce output resolution or frame rate to use a matching YouTube recommendation. Check whether other network activity is consuming upload capacity.

The stream looks poor despite using the recommended bitrate
Confirm that the OBS output resolution, frame rate and ingest codec match the YouTube recommendation you selected. A recommendation for one codec or frame rate does not automatically apply to another. Test the actual content: fast motion and detailed scenes can make compression more noticeable than a mostly static scene.
The bitrate field is in a different place than expected
OBS has Simple and Advanced output modes. In Simple mode, the streaming Video Bitrate field is under Settings → Output. In Advanced mode, inspect the streaming output settings on that same page. Resolution and frame rate remain under Settings → Video. OBS’s overview and quick-start guide describes these controls.

Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules
Bitrate only controls the data rate of the video stream; it does not grant rights to the footage, music or other material in a documentary or broadcast. Use content you have the right to stream and check YouTube’s live streaming guidance for current technical requirements. A technically healthy stream can still be interrupted or restricted for reasons unrelated to bitrate.
