How to Keep an Event Replay Available on YouTube After a Live Stream Ends

An ended YouTube live stream is not kept replaying by DVR. Check for an archive in YouTube Studio, set its visibility, and keep a local backup for important events.

To keep an event replay available after a YouTube live stream ends, make sure YouTube has an archive, then set the recording’s visibility for the viewers you want to reach. DVR does not preserve a finished broadcast: it lets viewers pause and rewind while the stream is live. For important events, record a local backup too.

Make sure YouTube has an archive

YouTube can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so do not rely on YouTube as the only copy of an important event. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. YouTube Help: archive live streams

An external SSD is one optional place to keep a local recording. It is not a YouTube requirement or a way to fix playback on YouTube; choose storage capacity based on your recording format and event length.

Find the replay and set its visibility

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select Content.
  2. Open the Live tab and select the event recording.
  3. Open the video’s details and check Visibility. Set it to the audience you intend to reach, then save.
  4. Confirm the archive is still present and that it has not been deleted. Test the replay link with the intended audience or account access before sharing it widely.

YouTube replays and highlights appear as videos on the channel. Share the replay’s watch link; you can also organize it with other event videos in a playlist. YouTube Help: archive live streams YouTube Help: live streaming tips

Know what DVR, Live Redirect, and a replay do

Feature When it works What it does What it does not do
YouTube archive After the stream, once an archive is available Makes the recording a channel video, subject to its visibility setting. It does not guarantee capture of streams over 12 hours or make a private or deleted archive accessible.
DVR During the live broadcast Lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume the live stream. It does not preserve the ended event as a replay. DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours; Apple TV, Apple AirPlay, and older app versions have lower limits. YouTube Help: DVR on live streams
Live Redirect As the current live broadcast ends Can send viewers to a Premiere or another live stream. It is an audience redirect, not a documented way to keep the ended event’s own replay playing. YouTube Help: Live Redirect
Local recording During the event, if you record a separate copy Preserves a backup under your control. It does not publish that copy to YouTube or change playback on the channel.

Troubleshoot a replay that is missing or unavailable

  • The event was longer than 12 hours: YouTube may not have captured it. Check for an archive in Studio; if none exists, use your local recording if you made one.
  • The replay exists but viewers cannot watch it: Check the video’s Visibility in Studio, save the intended setting, and share the replay’s watch link.
  • The replay disappeared: Check whether the archive remains in Studio. YouTube allows the creator to delete an archive; a deleted recording will not be available as that replay.
  • Viewers expected to rewind the finished stream: Direct them to the archived video. DVR controls live playback and is not the post-event recording.
  • Viewers were sent to a different video: Live Redirect sends an audience to a Premiere or another live stream; it does not continue playback of the finished event itself.
