Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To loop a local video on YouTube Live from a Mac, copy a stream key from YouTube Studio, enter it in OBS under Settings > Stream, then add the video as an OBS Media Source and enable Loop. Start the OBS stream and check the incoming preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room before making a scheduled broadcast public.
Before you start: check YouTube Live access
Your channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. In YouTube Studio, choose Create > Go Live to open the Live Control Room. YouTube’s eligibility and setup details are in its live streaming tips and encoder instructions.
- Have the video file available locally and confirm that it plays with the audio you intend to broadcast.
- Use a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your chosen stream settings.
- Keep the Live Control Room open so you can verify the incoming preview and stream health.
Find and copy your YouTube stream key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live.
- Open the Stream tab in the Live Control Room. Create a stream or select an existing one, then copy the displayed stream key.
- Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not show it in a screenshot, recording, or public chat.
YouTube supports custom keys for reuse. The exact account screen can vary, so use the key shown for the stream you are setting up. If the key is exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in the Live Control Room; replace the old value in OBS afterward. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
Enter the key in OBS Studio on macOS
- Open OBS Studio and choose OBS Studio > Settings > Stream (the menu label may vary slightly by version).
- If YouTube is available in the service list, select it and follow the displayed connection options. Otherwise, select a custom service, enter YouTube’s stream server URL, and paste the key into the Stream Key field.
- Choose RTMPS when the available server options support it. RTMPS encrypts the stream connection; YouTube explains the setup in its RTMPS guide.
- Apply the settings and close the dialog. Do not share a screenshot that reveals the key.
OBS’s overview guide describes the service, server, and key fields. YouTube’s encoder workflow likewise instructs encoder users to enter its server URL and stream key.

Add a video and make it loop
For one video file
- In the OBS Scenes dock, select the scene you want to broadcast, or create one with the + button.
- In Sources, click + and choose Media Source.
- Name the source if you wish, then select the local file in its properties.
- Enable Loop and confirm the source. The file should appear in the OBS preview; resize or reposition it to fit the canvas.
OBS documents Media Source support on macOS, common file types such as MP4 and MOV, and the Loop option, which replays the file after playback completes. See OBS Media Sources.
For a playlist of files
Use OBS’s VLC Video source when you need multiple files in sequence, then enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed for this source. For a single recording, Media Source is the simpler setup. OBS documents both options in its Media Sources guide.

Set stream quality and audio deliberately
There is no single bitrate that fits every resolution, frame rate, and internet connection. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, with 4 seconds as the maximum. Choose a bitrate suited to your target resolution and frame rate, and make sure your available upload capacity can sustain it. Use YouTube’s current tables for the specific settings: encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- In OBS, check that the selected video and output settings match the quality you intend to send.
- Listen to the source audio and watch OBS’s audio meters while the file plays. Confirm that the correct audio is reaching the stream.
- A local Media Source does not require macOS Screen Capture; that source is for capturing the screen, not playing a local video file.
Actual playback can vary with the file’s encoding, macOS permissions, decoding load, audio routing, and network stability. Test the exact file on the Mac you plan to use rather than assuming every setup will loop or transmit without interruption.

Test the incoming stream, then go live
- Start the file in OBS and confirm that the image and audio look and sound right in the preview.
- Click Start Streaming in OBS.
- In YouTube’s Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and check the stream status and audio/video quality.
- For a scheduled event, click Go live in the Live Control Room when you are ready for viewers to see it.
- Monitor the broadcast after it begins. OBS recommends a short test stream or recording before a first broadcast; YouTube also recommends testing and checking the preview. See the OBS Quick Start Guide and YouTube live streaming tips.
End the stream cleanly
Stop sending content from OBS to end the encoder stream. For a scheduled broadcast, use End Stream in the Live Control Room as appropriate, and confirm the YouTube broadcast has ended before closing OBS. YouTube says some streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; archive behavior depends on the workflow and YouTube’s current policies, so check the resulting video rather than assuming every stream will be archived. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.
Troubleshooting: OBS is not reaching YouTube
YouTube does not receive a signal
- Check the key and server: confirm that OBS has the key for the selected stream and the correct YouTube server URL if using a custom service. Re-copy the key from the Live Control Room if needed.
- Check for a reset or exposed key: a reset invalidates the old value, so update OBS with the new key.
- Check the stream destination: confirm the service, server, and connection options in Settings > Stream, then start streaming again and allow time for the Live Control Room preview to appear.
The preview is black or the video does not play
- Confirm the Media Source points to the correct local file and that the file plays on the Mac.
- Check that the source is visible in the selected scene and fits within the canvas.
- If using VLC Video for a playlist, make sure VLC is installed and the playlist files are accessible.
- Test another supported file if decoding fails; OBS lists supported media details in its Media Sources guide.
There is no audio or the stream is unstable
- Check the file’s audio, OBS audio meters, and the intended audio routing before broadcasting.
- Reduce the selected bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the chosen output, using YouTube’s encoder settings guidance to select an appropriate target.
- Run another short test and check YouTube’s incoming preview and stream health before going live.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a prerecorded YouTube stream to keep running without leaving a Mac or home connection on, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos and playlists from the cloud. Upload your video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
