That sequence makes the pairing feel full circle, though neither artist is documented using that phrase—and the reporting does not establish that “Better Now” inspired “Fortnight.”
How did Taylor Swift and Post Malone end up collaborating?
Swift had previously praised the hook of Malone’s “Better Now.” Later, Malone said Swift contacted him with a direct invitation. Recounting the exchange to Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, as reported by Rolling Stone Canada, Malone said: “She hit me up and said, ‘Let’s do it.’ And I was like, hell yeah.”
The earlier compliment and the later invitation give the collaboration its full-circle quality: an artist whose work Swift had admired became her collaborator. That is a way to frame the sequence, not a documented quote from either musician. The available reporting does not say that “Better Now” was a direct musical blueprint for “Fortnight.”
What is “Fortnight,” and where does it appear?
“Fortnight,” featuring Post Malone, is the opening track and lead single from Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department, released April 19, 2024, according to the Associated Press. The official Taylor Swift song listing credits Taylor Swift, Jack Antonoff and Austin Post as writers; Swift and Antonoff as producers; and Swift and Post Malone on lead vocals.

What does the “Fortnight” video mean?
Swift directed the video and described it as a way to show the imagined world behind the album. In an April 20, 2024 announcement, Universal Music Japan quoted her saying, “Pretty much everything in it is a metaphor or a reference to one corner of the album or another.” That description invites viewers to connect scenes to the record without requiring every image to have one fixed meaning.
The label’s announcement describes a surreal hospital setting, medication marked “FORGET HIM,” a tattoo connection between Swift and Malone’s characters, and scenes that reflect opposing emotional states. Those details support a reading of the video as a stylized extension of the album’s imagined world, rather than a literal account of the song’s creation.
