Create a custom, reusable stream key in YouTube Studio, enter YouTube’s stream URL and that key in OBS, then use OBS’s VLC Video source to play your playlist. A reusable key lets you reconnect an encoder without creating a new key each time; it does not keep one YouTube event or watch page live forever. You still need to start the broadcast and manage its event settings.
What a reusable stream key does—and doesn’t do
YouTube’s custom stream key is a credential that an encoder such as OBS uses to send video and audio to YouTube. YouTube allows a custom key to be reused. That makes it useful for recurring broadcasts from a saved OBS setup, but the key is not itself a continuously live broadcast: it does not create a permanent watch page, start every event automatically, or keep an event open after the encoder stops sending.
YouTube also offers Reuse settings when creating a stream. This can carry forward settings and the stream key from a previous stream. Stream-key reuse and event setup are separate decisions; verify the title, privacy, and active or scheduled event each time. See YouTube’s Manage live stream settings.
Create a custom key in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room, then select the Stream tab.
- In the stream key area, choose Create new stream key. Enter the settings YouTube presents and create the key. Choose a custom key if you want to reuse it for later encoder sessions.
- Copy both the stream URL and the stream key. Store the key securely; YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not put it in a public document, post, or video.
- Set the stream’s title, privacy, and other event details in Live Control Room. YouTube’s privacy choices include public, private, and unlisted. Check the selection rather than assuming a default: YouTube says the default differs by age group—private for ages 13–17 and public for ages 18 and older.
- If you want encoder signals to start or stop a broadcast, review YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls. These selections are copied when you use Reuse settings; do not assume that creating a reusable key enables them automatically.

Connect OBS to YouTube
- Open OBS and go to its streaming settings. If a YouTube integration is available in your OBS version, select YouTube and enter or authorize the account as prompted.
- If configuring the encoder manually, enter YouTube’s copied stream URL in the server field and paste the key into the Stream Key field. YouTube’s encoder guide identifies these as the connection fields; labels and integration details can vary across OBS versions and operating systems.
- Save the OBS settings or profile so you do not have to re-enter the credential for each session. Keep access to that profile restricted because it contains the stream key.
- Before a scheduled stream, follow YouTube’s event workflow: start the encoder, wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room, and select Go live when the preview is ready. Starting OBS alone does not necessarily publish a scheduled event.

Build an ordered, repeating playlist in OBS
Install VLC if OBS does not show VLC Video
OBS distinguishes a basic Media Source, which plays an individual file, from VLC Video, which can play a playlist. VLC Video requires VLC to be installed. Match the architecture: with 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. If the source is missing after installation, close and reopen OBS and check the source menu again.

Add and configure the playlist
- In the OBS scene that will be used for the broadcast, add a VLC Video source. The exact source-menu wording can vary by version.
- Add the video files to the source’s playlist and arrange them in the intended order.
- For a fixed sequence, leave Shuffle Playlist disabled. Enable Loop Playlist if you want playback to restart at the beginning after the final file; leave it off if the list should end.
- Review Visibility Behaviour. This setting controls what happens to playback when the source is hidden, such as when you switch scenes. Choose behavior deliberately so a scene change does not unexpectedly pause or stop the playlist.
- Make the playlist source visible in the active scene, then check the OBS preview and audio before streaming.
OBS’s Media Sources documentation explains the difference between Media Source and VLC Video, playlist controls, and the VLC requirement. Its Sources Guide covers adding and managing sources. OBS describes VLC Video this way: “Unlike Media Source, you can create a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.”
Go live and verify the broadcast
- Confirm the intended scene is active and the VLC playlist source is visible.
- Start streaming from OBS.
- Check Live Control Room for the incoming preview. For a scheduled event, wait for that preview and select Go live in YouTube when ready.
- Verify picture, audio, playlist order, loop behavior, event title, and privacy from the actual broadcast setup before relying on unattended playback.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after the encoder stops sending content. That archive behavior is not a promise that a reusable key preserves one event or one continuous live session. See the YouTube encoder instructions.

Secure or replace a compromised key
If someone else may have obtained the key, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old value in OBS. YouTube says a channel owner or manager can reset a key; editors and viewers cannot. Until OBS has the replacement key, it will not be using the newly reset credential. Follow YouTube’s key reset instructions.
Troubleshooting

Rights and playlist responsibility
Only include video and audio you have the rights and permissions to stream. A reusable key and OBS playlist setup do not grant permission to rebroadcast material or determine whether a channel meets YouTube’s monetization rules for reused content. Review the rights and platform rules that apply to your material before scheduling a recurring stream.
