Those details belong to the YouTube broadcast—the live event and its corresponding video. Set them in YouTube Studio or update the broadcast through YouTube’s Live Streaming API; the API method and fields are documented in the liveBroadcasts.update reference.
Which title and description should you change?
YouTube uses separate resources for the public live event and the media feed. The liveBroadcast resource represents the event and its associated video. Its snippet.title and snippet.description are the viewer-facing title and description. The separate liveStream resource represents the feed sent to YouTube; its title and description are not visible to YouTube users. The broadcast resource documentation describes the broadcast and its relationship to the video.
FFmpeg’s -metadata option sets a metadata key/value pair on an output, as in the documented example ffmpeg -i in.avi -metadata title="my title" out.flv. That is output or container metadata, not an update to YouTube’s server-side broadcast fields. See FFmpeg’s main options documentation.
Set the public title and description in YouTube Studio
If you are preparing a broadcast manually, edit the event’s details in YouTube Studio. The available evidence here does not establish a current Studio menu path, so use YouTube’s current interface guidance rather than relying on a possibly stale click-by-click sequence. Make sure you are editing the intended live event, not just configuring the stream or encoder.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Automate the update with YouTube’s API
For an automated workflow, use YouTube Data API’s liveBroadcasts.update method. It is a PUT request to https://www.googleapis.com/youtube/v3/liveBroadcasts. The part query parameter identifies the resource parts being updated or returned; the method requires OAuth authorization. The update reference lists supported scopes, including https://www.googleapis.com/auth/youtube and https://www.googleapis.com/auth/youtube.force-ssl.
- Authorize the channel. Obtain OAuth authorization for the YouTube channel that owns the broadcast, using a scope permitted by the current update method reference.
- Find the broadcast ID. Identify the live event whose public details you want to change. Use its broadcast ID—not the stream ID, stream name, or ingestion URL.
- Read the current resource and prepare the update body. The method documentation warns that existing properties omitted from an update request may be deleted. It also lists required request-body fields beyond the title and description, including
id,snippet.scheduledStartTime, and monitor-stream settings undercontentDetails. Check the current reference and preserve any existing values that must remain. - Send the update. Set
snippet.titleandsnippet.descriptionfor the target broadcast, along with the other request fields required by the current method documentation. The broadcast description limit is 5,000 characters. - Read the broadcast back. Retrieve the resource and confirm that its title and description now contain the intended values.
Because the update operation’s required request-body details can evolve, validate your implementation against the live method reference before deploying it. YouTube’s API revision history records documentation changes on August 17 and 18, 2026, including changes unrelated to the basic distinction between broadcast metadata and feed ingestion.

Keep the broadcast ID separate from FFmpeg’s stream details
FFmpeg’s job is to deliver audio and video using YouTube’s ingestion details. YouTube identifies an ingestion address and stream name; depending on the encoder, those may be entered separately or combined as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. The ingestion information routes the feed, while the broadcast ID identifies the event whose public title and description you update. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and the broadcast resource reference.
Do not put a real stream key in a script example, screenshot, or public post. Treat it as a credential that allows a feed to be sent to your channel. Use placeholders in documentation and keep the actual key private.

Limits and common mistakes
- Changing only
-metadata: this changes output metadata; it does not perform YouTube’s broadcast update. - Updating the wrong resource or ID: change the
liveBroadcastfields for the public event. A stream resource and its ingestion details serve a different purpose. - Sending a partial update carelessly: omitted existing properties may be deleted. Read the resource, preserve values you need, and follow the required-body fields in the current API reference.
- Using the wrong description limit: the broadcast description limit is 5,000 characters. The separate
liveStreamresource has a 10,000-character description maximum and a 1–128-character title range; those constraints do not define the public broadcast description. See the liveStreams reference. - Authorization or eligibility errors: YouTube may reject an update if the authorized account lacks the needed live permissions or live streaming is not enabled for it. Check the account, authorization scope, and API error details.
- Exposing the stream key: the key is for ingestion, not for changing event metadata. Redact it anywhere you share logs or configuration.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel rather than a one-off FFmpeg session, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud: upload a recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
