To reduce black screens and freezes between videos in an FFmpeg YouTube stream, make the playlist compatible before sending it: use the concat demuxer only when the files have matching stream layouts and properties, or normalize and re-encode them with the concat filter when they differ. Then send one continuous, correctly paced output to YouTube, match its current ingest recommendations, and test every transition. No FFmpeg option can guarantee gapless playback across arbitrary files, networks, and viewer players.
Why a playlist can freeze or go black between files
A playlist is not automatically one continuous media stream. The files may differ in codecs, dimensions, frame rates, pixel formats, time bases, audio sample rates, or channel layouts. The concat demuxer does not convert those differences; incompatible inputs can fail or produce a broken transition. A September 2024 FFmpeg-user discussion about files with different formats, sizes, and aspect ratios illustrates the problem, but is not a guarantee that any one remedy fixes every playlist (FFmpeg-user thread).
Even compatible files can have irregular timestamps, unequal audio and video durations, or endings that do not align. Re-encoding can also overload the machine, while a weak or disrupted upload connection can interrupt delivery. Finally, viewers’ players buffer and display the feed differently, so a transition that is clean in the generated output is not a promise of literally zero delay for every viewer.
Choose the right FFmpeg concat method
| Method | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer | The files have the same streams and compatible properties, including codecs and time bases. | Can avoid re-encoding, but it does not normalize mismatched inputs. Verify transitions and timestamps. |
| Concat filter | Inputs need to be decoded, aligned, and encoded into a shared output format. | More flexible for mixed sources, but re-encoding costs processing time and CPU/GPU capacity. |
| Normalize, then use the demuxer | You want a consistent staging set and can afford preprocessing and temporary disk space. | Requires converting every item first; the resulting files still need transition testing. |
FFmpeg’s FAQ distinguishes the concat filter for re-encoding from the demuxer, which can avoid re-encoding when the formats permit it (FFmpeg FAQ: joining video files). Stream copy (`-c copy`) does not make mismatched inputs compatible.

Prepare the playlist and inspect each file
1. Inventory video and audio properties
Use ffprobe or another media inspector on every file. Compare video codec, dimensions, frame rate, pixel format, time base, and duration; compare audio codec, sample rate, channel layout, and duration as well. Check that each source has the video and audio streams you intend to include. Look for irregular timestamps or audio/video endings that do not coincide.
2. Build a concat-demuxer list for matching files
Create a plain text file such as playlist.txt with one entry for each item in playback order:

For paths that require it, the schematic input form is -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt. The -safe 0 option relaxes path safety checks; use it only with a playlist you control and trust. Confirm quoting and paths work on your operating system.
3. Normalize mismatched files or use a concat filter
If the sources differ, either transcode staging copies to a common profile before concatenating with the demuxer, or build a concat-filter graph that decodes, aligns, and re-encodes them. Standardize the chosen resolution, frame rate, pixel format, video codec, audio sample rate, channel layout, and audio codec. Pick an output mode the machine can encode continuously. Normalization addresses format differences, but may not repair every timestamp or content problem; test transitions after conversion.

Configure one continuous output for YouTube
Pace file input for live delivery
For file-based live delivery, FFmpeg’s real-time input pacing option -re may be appropriate; -stream_loop -1 can be used when the input should repeat. Their behavior and placement depend on the installed FFmpeg version and command structure. These options do not ensure that files are compatible or that transitions are gapless.
Match current ingest guidance
YouTube’s English-language encoder guidance retrieved October 3, 2026 supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Select a bitrate for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no single bitrate for every mode. For example, the page’s H.264 recommendations are 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are mode-specific platform recommendations, not universal requirements. Check YouTube’s current table for your selected mode at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. Retrieve the ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room for the event you intend to broadcast (Set up your encoder for live streaming; Stream using a custom stream key). Treat the key like a password: do not expose it in public scripts, screenshots, or logs. If it is exposed, reset it in Studio and update the encoder.

The encoder, stream mapping, rate control, output container, protocol URL, and flags depend on your FFmpeg build, source files, and YouTube event settings. If inputs do not match, preprocess them or use a concat-filter graph instead. Check the documentation for the exact installed version—FFmpeg documentation is regenerated nightly—and test the start, each transition, and the loop boundary before relying on the stream (FFmpeg documentation).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test transitions and monitor stream health
- Start a private or unlisted test event in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Include representative audio and motion, and test the actual playlist, including its most different files and the loop boundary.
- Watch the Control Room preview and stream-health messages as each file changes. Check both picture and sound for black frames, freezes, silence, or abrupt cuts.
- Watch encoder load during re-encoding and confirm the machine can sustain the selected resolution and frame rate.
- Check upload stability. YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth with 20% headroom, and monitoring the stream for network problems (Streaming tips).
Troubleshoot a gap, freeze, or failed stream
| Symptom or cause | What to check and do |
|---|---|
| Failure or broken picture at a file change | Compare stream properties. Use the demuxer only for compatible inputs; otherwise normalize the files or decode and re-encode with a concat filter. |
| Brief black frame, audio cut, or abrupt transition | Inspect timestamps and actual audio/video durations around that boundary. Test each transition; the available guidance does not establish one general-purpose flag that repairs all timestamp or alignment issues. |
| Stutter or encoder errors during re-encoding | Check CPU/GPU load and choose a resolution and frame rate the machine can sustain. No hardware benchmark establishes a universally suitable machine. |
| Stream health reports network trouble | Check sustained upload capacity against the total stream bitrate and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. A wired Ethernet connection may help connection reliability if Wi-Fi is unstable, but cannot fix incompatible media or timestamps. |
| Video does not reach the intended live event | Confirm the Live Control Room event, ingest URL, protocol, and stream key. If a key has been exposed, reset it and replace it in the command. |
| Loop or real-time pacing behaves unexpectedly | Check option behavior and ordering against the documentation for your installed FFmpeg version, then test a short run before going live. |
Copyright and YouTube channel rules still apply
Technical continuity does not grant rights to the videos or audio in a playlist. Use content you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules and live-stream requirements before broadcasting. Repeatedly replaying material does not make it original or resolve rights issues. YouTube’s policies can change, so check the rules that apply to your account and content before a public stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel rather than managing an FFmpeg pipeline yourself, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos and playlists from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams uploaded video to YouTube, not from a live camera.
