To send one FFmpeg feed to several YouTube Live destinations, configure a separate output URL and matching stream key for each destination. FFmpeg’s HLS variant playlists are a different thing: they create multiple quality variants within one HLS presentation, not separate YouTube live events or keyed destinations.
Choose the YouTube destinations first
Set up each destination in YouTube Studio before configuring FFmpeg. A destination may be a live stream you create or select in Live Control Room. For each one, obtain the ingest server URL and its corresponding stream key. YouTube describes a stream key as the encoder’s credential and address; treat the URL and key as a matched pair, not interchangeable pieces of configuration. YouTube: Manage live stream settings · YouTube: Stream with an encoder
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the live stream for the destination.
- Copy the Live server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Repeat for every destination, keeping each URL paired with its own key.
- Keep keys private. A channel owner or manager can reset a compromised key in Live Control Room. To reuse a key, YouTube supports creating a custom stream key.
Check the protocol shown by YouTube for each destination. For RTMP or RTMPS, use the supplied RTMP(S) server URL and key. For HLS ingestion, configure an HLS stream key and use the HLS URL YouTube supplies; the key may already be embedded in that URL. Do not assume an RTMP command can be changed to HLS by swapping only the URL. YouTube: Use HLS ingestion
Decide what “separate playlists” means
Separate YouTube live destinations
If you mean separate live streams or destinations, define one FFmpeg output for each destination’s URL/key configuration. Each output sends to its own YouTube ingest target. A single output or local playlist does not create additional YouTube Live events.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Multiple HLS quality variants
If you mean several HLS playlists at different bitrates or resolutions, FFmpeg’s HLS muxer can package variants into one HLS presentation using repeated -map options and var_stream_map. Those are variant playlists within one presentation; they are not separate YouTube events with distinct keys. FFmpeg HLS muxer documentation
Configure FFmpeg outputs
Fan out the same encoded feed with tee
The tee muxer can send the same encoded audio and video packets to multiple outputs, so the feed can be encoded once when one encoding is suitable for every destination. Tee does not automatically choose the streams or infer every output format: explicitly map the streams and specify output format options where necessary. FFmpeg documents tee as a way to send the same data to several outputs; its conventional multiple-output approach can initiate parallel encoding operations instead. The structural pattern is one tee output target per YouTube destination. In each target, use that destination’s correct ingest URL and key, and configure the muxer/protocol required by YouTube. Exact tee syntax depends on whether the endpoint is RTMP(S) or HLS and on the FFmpeg build and its supported muxer options; there is no single generic HLS command that is valid for every YouTube ingest setup.
Use conventional multiple outputs when outputs differ
Define separate outputs when destinations need different transformations, encodings, or muxer settings. This gives each output its own configuration, but FFmpeg’s conventional multiple-output behavior may start parallel encoding operations and use more compute than tee. Choose based on whether one encoded feed fits all destinations and whether separate settings are actually needed, not on an assumed quality or reliability advantage.

Map streams deliberately
FFmpeg’s -map option controls which input streams go into an output. It can be repeated, and an input stream can be mapped more than once. With tee in particular, select the required audio and video streams explicitly and check that every output uses the intended streams. Consult the documentation for the installed FFmpeg version: the online documentation is rolling and may describe options absent from an older binary. FFmpeg stream mapping
HLS ingestion requirements are not ordinary playlist settings
When YouTube’s HLS ingest option is selected, follow its endpoint-specific instructions rather than pointing YouTube at a locally hosted .m3u8 file. YouTube’s guidance calls for an HTTPS server URL, TS segments, HTTP POST or PUT, no byte ranges, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and segments lasting 1–4 seconds. Its HLS ultra-low-latency option is off. HLS sends segments rather than a continuous stream and has higher latency than RTMP. These are YouTube ingestion requirements, not universal rules for all HLS use. YouTube HLS ingestion guidance

Check YouTube’s active-stream limits
YouTube Help currently states a limit of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key; both limits apply. These are changeable service limits, and the surfaced Help page does not provide a publication date, so verify the current limit in YouTube Help before planning a larger setup. YouTube Help on streaming limits
Troubleshoot common setup failures
- The output is rejected or does not connect: check that the URL and key belong to the same YouTube destination, then confirm that FFmpeg is using the ingest protocol shown for that stream.
- One output works but another does not: inspect each output’s URL/key pair and protocol independently. A successful first destination does not validate the other destinations’ credentials or settings.
- Tee reports an output-format or stream-selection problem: explicitly map the input streams and supply any required output format options; tee does not automatically select streams or infer all formats.
- An HLS target fails despite a working local playlist: a locally served playlist is not a substitute for YouTube’s HLS ingest URL. Recheck the YouTube-provided HTTPS URL, HLS key configuration, segment and HTTP requirements.
- An option in an example is unrecognized: check the installed FFmpeg build and its supported muxer options; the online documentation may not match an older binary.
- You cannot start another destination: check the channel-wide and per-key active-stream limits in YouTube Help, as well as whether another stream is still active.
- A key may have leaked: have a channel owner or manager reset it in Live Control Room, then update the encoder configuration using the replacement.
