The loop option keeps FFmpeg reading the file again; it does not restart FFmpeg after a crash or guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast. This guide covers the YouTube and FFmpeg setup, settings, monitoring, and the separate recovery problems involved in keeping a stream online.
Before you start: account, media, and server
- Your YouTube channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and meet YouTube’s minimum age requirement of 16. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance before scheduling.
- Use audio and video you own or are licensed to stream continuously on YouTube. A general music subscription or license should not be assumed to cover a 24/7 public livestream; check the specific rights and terms for your tracks.
- Install an FFmpeg build that includes the codecs and network protocols required by your chosen input and YouTube ingest endpoint. The commands below are illustrative, not a tested Windows Server deployment recipe. Confirm options against the FFmpeg version installed on your server.
- Keep the media file accessible to the Windows account that runs FFmpeg, and confirm the server has sufficient upload capacity for the stream.
Create the YouTube encoder stream
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow.
- Find the ingest URL and stream key in the stream settings. YouTube describes the key as both a password and address for the stream; store it as a secret, do not publish it, and reset it if exposed. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
- Use the RTMPS endpoint shown in Live Control Room when available. Do not assume an RTMP endpoint is encrypted; RTMPS carries RTMP over TLS/SSL.
Prepare a file to loop with FFmpeg
For a single video file, FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option requests indefinite input looping. The -re option reads the input at its native rate, which is commonly useful when sending a file as a live stream. Put input options before the input file, then place encoding and output options before the destination.

Do not expose the real key in logs, screenshots, scripts shared with others, or public repositories. The exact output options depend on whether your asset contains video, audio, or both, the codecs in the file, the FFmpeg build, and the selected ingest protocol. This example shows the loop and connection structure, not a complete command proven to work for every file.
Audio-only or a playlist
If the broadcast is intended to be audio-only, choose an output format YouTube accepts and options appropriate to that audio source; do not copy a 1080p video profile onto an audio-only stream. For a playlist or multiple files, validate the playlist format, paths, timing, and transition behavior with your installed FFmpeg build before leaving it unattended. The loop option alone does not manage a playlist’s rights, repair missing files, or recover a failed process.

Choose encoder settings for the actual stream
Match output resolution and frame rate to the content and the profile you intend to send. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. For the specific H.264 profile at 1080p and 30 fps, YouTube Help lists a recommended video bitrate of 5 Mbps; that figure is not a universal recommendation for audio-only streams, other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs. Review the applicable YouTube encoder settings for the format you choose.

Check bandwidth, preview, and stream health
YouTube recommends at least 20% upload bandwidth headroom beyond the combined bitrate of primary and backup streams. If you send only one stream, leave capacity above its bitrate rather than running the server connection at its ceiling. The measured upload capacity must be reliable in the server’s actual network conditions, not merely a best-case speed-test result. Before starting the public broadcast, inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators, then continue monitoring them while live. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Keep the stream running: looping is not recovery
-stream_loop -1 repeats the input while the FFmpeg process remains able to read and send it. It does not restart FFmpeg if the process exits, restore a failed network connection in every case, or ensure YouTube still considers the broadcast live. Treat these as separate failure points: the media input, FFmpeg process, server, network path, and YouTube stream state.
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation gives an RTMP output example using -f fifo, -fifo_format flv, -attempt_recovery 1, and -recovery_wait_time 1. This is a building block to validate with the deployed FFmpeg version and desired behavior, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. A Windows Server service, Task Scheduler, restart policy, power configuration, or watchdog needs to be designed and tested for the specific server and operating environment. No single FFmpeg loop flag configures those Windows behaviors. Plan how you will notice a stopped process, restart it safely, and check whether YouTube has accepted the resumed connection before relying on an unattended broadcast.
Plan replay expectations for an all-day broadcast
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on a single 24-hour broadcast becoming one complete replay. If a replay matters, plan deliberate stream rotation into segments shorter than 12 hours and verify the resulting archive in YouTube Studio; rotation itself requires operational handling and should be tested before you depend on it.
