You can start a screen recording on Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, or Android, but that does not mean you can capture a Disney+ movie or episode. Protected playback may appear black, omit audio, or fail to record. If that happens, it is usually a content-protection limitation—not a setting you can safely fix by disabling protection. For offline viewing, use Disney+’s in-app downloads on an eligible plan and supported mobile device.
Can you screen-record Disney+?
Device recording tools can capture your screen, but Disney+ playback may be protected from capture. Depending on the title, app or browser, operating system, and display setup, a recording might show the Disney+ interface but not the video, capture audio without the picture, or fail altogether. Menus may record normally even when playback does not.
Disney does not provide a built-in screen-recording feature. Its U.S. Subscriber Agreement describes access as a limited personal-use license and restricts copying content or circumventing content-protection systems without express written permission. A subscription is not a license to export or republish episodes and films.
How to start a normal screen recording
The steps below start ordinary device or app recording; they are not guaranteed methods for capturing Disney+ video. Use them for recording your own screen, interface, or commentary. Protected playback may still be missing from the resulting file.

Windows 10 and Windows 11
- Open Disney+ in a supported browser or app.
- Press Windows key + G to open Xbox Game Bar. In the Capture widget, select Start recording, or press Windows key + Alt + R.
- Press Windows key + Alt + R again to stop. Find the file in the Captures location shown by Game Bar.
Windows may capture the surrounding interface while leaving Disney+ video black. Snipping Tool also has a screen-recording function on supported Windows builds: press Windows key + Shift + R, select an area, then start and stop from its controls. Feature availability and labels can vary by Windows version.
Mac
- Open Disney+ and press Shift + Command + 5.
- Choose Record Entire Screen or Record Selected Portion. Select Options if you need to choose a microphone or save location.
- Select Record. Stop with the menu-bar control or press Command + Control + Esc.
The recording tool may capture the desktop but exclude protected Disney+ video or audio.

iPhone and iPad
- Go to Settings → Control Center and add Screen Recording if it is not already there.
- Open Control Center, tap Screen Recording, and wait for the countdown.
- Stop from the red status indicator or Control Center. Look for the recording in Photos.
Protected streaming playback may be blocked or appear black. Turning on microphone recording captures microphone input; it does not make protected video recordable.
Android phones and tablets
- Open Quick Settings and choose Screen recorder, Screen recording, or a similarly named control.
- Choose whether to record device audio, microphone audio, or both, then start recording.
- Stop from the notification or floating control. Check the Gallery or Files app for the result.
Controls and capture behavior differ among Android manufacturers and devices, so these steps may not match every phone or tablet.

OBS Studio
OBS Studio is a free general-purpose recording and streaming application, not a reliable way to capture Disney+ playback. For a tutorial or other non-protected material:
- Download OBS from its official website and create a scene.
- Add Display Capture or Window Capture, then select the display or window.
- Set a save location and format under Settings → Output.
- Start recording, then stop and inspect the resulting file.
OBS may record the desktop, browser controls, or other windows while the Disney+ video remains black. Switching capture modes can help diagnose ordinary capture problems; it is not a way to bypass content protection.

Why is my Disney+ recording black or silent?
- Protected playback: The recorder may capture interface elements but not the protected video layer.
- Separate audio and video paths: A file may contain sound without a picture, or neither. This does not necessarily mean the recorder is misconfigured.
- App or browser conflict: Capture utilities, overlays, remote-desktop tools, browser extensions, content filters, or security software can interfere with playback. Disney’s blank-screen and playback troubleshooting guidance notes that third-party applications can cause problems.
- Display-chain issue: An external monitor, dock, adapter, projector, or older component can affect playback. Disney’s HDMI guidance warns that older video or audio components may reduce quality or prevent playback.
- App-managed downloads: Disney+ downloads are for offline playback in the app, not ordinary video files to open in a recorder.
What to try if Disney+ playback goes black
- Stop recording and check whether Disney+ plays normally with the recorder closed.
- Close OBS, Game Bar, capture extensions, overlays, remote-desktop tools, and other recording software.
- Restart the browser or Disney+ app and close unnecessary applications.
- If you use an external display, check its cable, dock, or adapter and test normal playback without that connection if practical.
- Update the Disney+ app and operating system, then try playback on a supported device.
- If the screen remains blank or frozen during ordinary playback, follow Disney’s troubleshooting steps or contact Disney+ support.
If Disney+ works normally until playback begins but the recording shows black video, treat that as a capture limitation. Do not disable DRM, bypass HDCP, use a capture-card workaround, or install a downloader intended to defeat protection.

Can you download Disney+ movies instead?
For offline viewing, Disney+ offers in-app downloads on selected mobile devices and eligible plans. The current U.S. download help page lists iPhone and iPad, Android phones and tablets, Amazon Fire tablets, Apple Vision Pro, and Meta Quest. It says downloads are not available on TV-connected devices, computers, or Windows 10/11 tablets. The U.S. download troubleshooting page lists Premium and certain Premium bundle or legacy plans as eligible; ad-supported plans and some lower-tier bundles do not support downloads. Eligibility can vary by country, title, plan, and app version.

Downloads remain inside the Disney+ app and are not exportable MP4 files. Disney says the subscription must remain active and the device must connect to the internet at least once every 30 days; titles may expire or become unavailable, and downloads are removed if you log out. The help page also states a limit of up to 10 supported mobile devices.
Is screen-recording Disney+ legal?
There is no single answer that applies everywhere. Disney’s U.S. agreement restricts copying its content and bypassing content protection without express written permission. Copyright law and exceptions such as fair use or fair dealing depend on jurisdiction and the particular facts—including purpose, amount used, and market effect. Personal use alone does not automatically grant permission. For a review, lesson, presentation, or publication, seek permission or use material that is licensed for your intended use.
