Scheduling a YouTube Live event does not schedule or play the video. YouTube Studio sets up the event; OBS must send the prerecorded file or playlist to YouTube when it is time to start, and the computer and internet connection must stay available for the broadcast. For an always-on channel, configure the OBS source, connect it to the event’s encoder settings, and test the event’s start behavior and looping before relying on it unattended.
What scheduling an always-on stream actually involves
There are two separate jobs: YouTube Studio creates the broadcast event, while OBS supplies the video and audio. YouTube describes an encoder this way: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” YouTube Help explains encoder setup, stream URL and key, and scheduled events.
A scheduled start time is not a playout schedule. OBS must be running and sending the feed, and the YouTube event must be configured to transition live as intended. If you want programming to continue around the clock, you also need a source or playlist that keeps supplying content after each file ends.
Prepare the YouTube Live event
-
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and schedule a broadcast. Set its title, description, visibility, thumbnail, and start time. Choose the event settings appropriate to your channel and test setup.

-
Open the event’s encoder settings and note the stream URL and stream key. In OBS, use the event’s connection details as directed by YouTube. Treat the key as a password: do not show it in screenshots, recordings, or published material.
-
Check the event’s auto-start behavior. Starting to send data from OBS and making the broadcast live are distinct states; depending on the event settings, a separate go-live action may be required. Verify this with an unlisted or private test event before scheduling a public unattended stream.

Set up prerecorded video in OBS
Add the recording as an OBS media source, or prepare the playlist arrangement you intend to use. Confirm that the chosen source is visible and audible in the OBS preview, then connect OBS to YouTube using the scheduled event’s encoder settings. Exact OBS and Studio labels can change, so use the current controls shown in your installed OBS version and YouTube Studio rather than relying on older screenshots.
Before treating the setup as continuous, determine what happens when the media reaches its end: whether it loops, advances to the next item, or stops. Test the actual source and playlist behavior. Also test a brief disconnection and recovery, and confirm that OBS remains open and the source resumes as expected.

Keep the local OBS broadcast running
With this method, OBS is a local encoder. The computer, OBS process, power, network connection, and usable upload capacity are all part of the delivery chain for as long as you want the broadcast to run. A scheduled YouTube event cannot keep sending video if the computer is shut down or OBS stops.
- Before the start: confirm the correct event and stream key are selected, the media source is loaded, and the computer has power and network access.
- At the start: check that OBS is sending data and that the YouTube event has actually become live. If it has not, follow the event’s configured start process.
- During playback: monitor YouTube stream health and the broadcast itself. A green or active encoder state alone does not establish that the intended video and audio are playing correctly.
- For longer runs: test end-of-file behavior, playlist transitions, OBS restarts, and reconnection before leaving the setup unattended.
For a recurring schedule, Google’s API documentation treats stream settings separately from broadcast events. A stream configuration can be reused for events at different times; separate streams can be created for concurrent programs with different settings. The documentation also describes running a 24/7 broadcast while creating an additional broadcast from the same incoming feed. Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API documentation is useful context if you are automating event management, but the API model does not itself play files or keep an OBS computer running.

Common problems and what to check
- The event is scheduled, but no video appears: Studio created the event, but OBS may not be sending data. Check that OBS is running, the correct source is active, and the event’s stream URL and key are configured.
- OBS is sending data, but the broadcast is not live: Check the event’s auto-start setting and whether YouTube expects a separate go-live action. Test this transition in advance.
- The stream stops when a video ends: A scheduled event does not automatically repeat the source. Check the media source or playlist’s end-of-file behavior and test a full cycle.
- The stream stops after a local interruption: OBS and the local computer are responsible for the feed. Check power, network availability, OBS status, and what happens after a restart or disconnect; do not assume recovery without testing it.
- The wrong program appears: Verify that the intended OBS source or playlist is active and that you connected to the correct YouTube event’s encoder settings.
Choose local OBS or cloud playout
Local OBS is appropriate when you want direct control over the encoder and can keep the computer and connection available. A cloud playout service can remove the local computer from the delivery chain, but compare how it handles scheduling, uploaded files, playlists, recovery, event control, privacy, and cost. Provider features and terms can change; check the provider’s current documentation rather than assuming a service will behave like OBS.
YouTube’s encoder help lists cloud tools for continuous prerecorded streaming, including Gyre and Upstream. Their inclusion is not a guarantee of any particular reliability or audience outcome. Check YouTube’s current verified encoder options.
