For a genuinely continuous channel, decide whether you mean one long live event or a sequence of shorter scheduled broadcasts—YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, so a 24/7 feed needs an explicit continuity and archive plan.
Choose what “continuous” means for your church
A scheduled service and an always-on channel are different operating plans. YouTube’s event gives viewers a scheduled watch page; an encoder or hosted service supplies the live video and audio. You need both pieces.
- One scheduled service: Start a sermon playlist at a set time, then end the broadcast after the final message and closing slate.
- Continuous programming: Keep a feed running by looping or sequencing recordings. Confirm how your playback tool handles the end of a file or playlist, reconnection, and interruptions. YouTube’s guidance that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived means you should not assume a single 24/7 event will be archived as one complete video.
- Repeated broadcasts: Schedule separate events for recurring services if you want distinct watch pages and archives. This requires a process for starting each event and managing gaps between them.
Prepare the sermon playlist
Before configuring YouTube, make the files and playback sequence ready. This is a production step: YouTube Studio does not provide the playlist-loop function for a scheduled live event.
- Arrange the recordings in the intended order and confirm that the playback tool supports sequential playback. If the feed should repeat, confirm it supports looping.
- Play every file through before broadcast. Check that picture and sound remain present, speech is intelligible, levels are reasonably consistent, and the beginning and end do not cut off important words.
- Review title cards, transitions, captions, and any closing slate. Make sure the sequence will not unexpectedly stop or expose a desktop, control panel, or unrelated material when a recording finishes.
- Inventory the rights in each recording, including sermon contributions, worship performances, backing tracks, lyrics, photographs, video clips, and graphics. Confirm that your church has permission for the intended YouTube live use and any replay archive.

For a local encoder, plan who will monitor the computer, network connection, and playback. For hosted or dedicated options, verify what happens after a disconnection or at the end of the playlist rather than assuming unattended recovery or looping.

Enable live streaming and schedule the YouTube event
- Enable live access if needed. YouTube says first-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours. Complete this before the day of the service.
- Open YouTube Studio. Go to Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule Stream.
- Create or reuse an event. YouTube lets you create a new stream or reuse settings. Set the title, description, thumbnail, date and time, visibility, and audience details that apply to the broadcast.
- Share the event page. Send the scheduled watch-page link to the congregation so viewers can find the event and opt into reminders.
- Check start behavior. Review the event’s stream settings, including auto-start and auto-stop if available. Do not assume reused settings are right for this event.
Connect the playlist and start the broadcast
- In YouTube Live Control Room, locate the event’s stream URL and stream key.
- Enter those details in your chosen encoder or hosted service. Treat the stream key as a password: YouTube says it enables the encoder to send content to the channel. If you reset the key, update the encoder or service too.
- Start the prerecorded feed early enough to inspect the incoming preview. Check that the correct recording is playing and that both video and audio reach YouTube.
- When the event is ready, start the broadcast in Live Control Room if the event configuration requires a manual start. YouTube’s workflow calls for waiting for the incoming preview before manually starting a scheduled stream.
- For a scheduled service, watch the ending and end the live broadcast deliberately after the final sermon and closing slate. For a continuous feed, monitor the encoder or service and verify its playlist-end and reconnection behavior.
Protect the church’s rights and the live feed
The church is responsible for obtaining the rights needed for its live content, including music rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches; it may replace matched material with a placeholder, interrupt the stream, or terminate it if the material continues. A license does not necessarily prevent a live interruption: YouTube says a rights holder may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. A Content ID claim may also appear on an archived live stream after it ends.
Before airing material, confirm the license covers the actual use, territory, and any archived replay, and ask the rights administrator about channel allowlisting where applicable. Do not assume that a worship or music license automatically clears YouTube Content ID. YouTube’s live-stream terms state that the content provider must have the necessary rights for exploitation of the live content on Google services worldwide, including music licensing rights.

Common problems and practical fixes
- The event page exists, but viewers see no live video: Scheduling does not transmit media. Start the encoder or hosted playlist, confirm it is sending to the event’s stream URL and key, and check for the incoming preview in Live Control Room.
- The encoder connects, but the event has not started: Check whether the event requires a manual start. Wait for the preview, then use the Live Control Room control when ready.
- The feed stops when a sermon ends: The playback tool may not advance or loop automatically. Check its playlist-end settings and test the full sequence before the service.
- YouTube stops or replaces part of the broadcast: A third-party content match may be involved. Review the Live Control Room notice, confirm the church has the required rights, and contact the rights administrator about Content ID allowlisting.
- The encoder stops sending after a stream-key change: Replace the saved key in the encoder or service with the current one.
- A continuous broadcast is not available as one complete archive: YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours. Plan how the church will preserve recordings and present an ongoing feed rather than relying on one indefinitely archived live video.

Can I use this process for a live camera service instead of prerecorded sermons?
