Jean Reno plays Léon, a hired assassin in New York who reluctantly takes in Mathilda, a 12-year-old whose family has been murdered by corrupt DEA agent Norman Stansfield. Natalie Portman plays Mathilda, Gary Oldman plays Stansfield, and Danny Aiello plays Tony. Sony classifies the film as drama, suspense and action, and rates it R. It is a violent thriller, not a lighthearted mentor story; the relationship between its adult protagonist and child character is often considered unusual and troubling.
Luc Besson wrote and directed the film. Its U.S. theatrical release date was November 18, 1994, according to Rotten Tomatoes. Runtime depends on the version and listing: Rotten Tomatoes gives 1 hour 55 minutes, while Prime Video lists a 1 hour 45 minute original version and a 2 hour 12 minute extended cut.
What is The Professional about?
Léon lives alone and works as a contract killer. After Stansfield murders Mathilda’s family, she seeks refuge with Léon. He reluctantly lets her stay, and the two form an uneasy bond as Mathilda pursues revenge. The setup leads into a crime story shaped by violence, grief and their starkly different circumstances.
The film is sometimes called Léon or Léon: The Professional. This article refers specifically to Luc Besson’s 1994 film, not Georges Lautner’s 1981 French film Le professionnel, the 1966 western The Professionals, or the 2003 Serbian film also titled The Professional.

How can you watch it, and what formats are listed?
Prime Video’s U.S. page lists rental or purchase access and separates the original and extended versions. Sony lists digital, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD formats. These listings do not establish current availability, price, a particular disc edition’s contents or streaming rights in every country.
Sony’s 4K HDR playback note specifies a 4K UHD television with HDR, an Ultra HD Blu-ray player and high-speed HDMI 2.0A cables. A 4K disc is a physical format, so confirm that your player supports Ultra HD Blu-ray; a standard Blu-ray player alone does not meet Sony’s stated equipment requirements for its 4K HDR playback note.
