To change what plays at different hours during one continuous YouTube livestream, schedule the content in your encoder—not in YouTube’s broadcast scheduler. In OBS, create a scene for each time block, add the appropriate media, then use Advanced Scene Switcher date/time conditions to switch scenes automatically. For a single continuous sequence, an OBS VLC Video source can play an ordered playlist instead.
What YouTube’s schedule controls—and what it does not
YouTube treats a broadcast event and the stream carrying its audio and video as separate objects: the liveBroadcast is the event, while a liveStream carries the feed. Scheduling a broadcast start time controls when that event is due to begin; it does not tell YouTube to rotate playlists or change the video inside an already-running feed. Plan the content changes in OBS or another playout layer.
When creating a scheduled broadcast through YouTube’s API, a scheduled start time is required. The broadcast reference says that if an end time is omitted, the event is treated as indefinite. Those event settings do not create a daypart schedule for OBS content.
Choose a playlist setup for your dayparts
One ordered sequence: use a VLC Video source
If the stream should play one sequence from beginning to end, add an OBS VLC Video source and select an ordered media playlist. VLC must be installed on the computer running OBS. OBS provides loop and shuffle options, and its source visibility settings affect what happens to playback when the source is hidden. Choose the behavior you want and test it: depending on the setting, playback may stop, pause, or continue while hidden.

Different content at different hours: use separate scenes
If morning, afternoon, and evening need different playlists—or different graphics, captions, or other scene elements—make a separate OBS scene for each daypart. Add the relevant media sources to each scene. This lets a time rule select a whole prepared layout rather than relying on one playlist to represent every block.
- Use one VLC playlist when the content is a single continuous sequence.
- Use separate scenes when a daypart needs a different playlist or other visual elements.
- Decide whether a scene change should preserve a source’s playback position or restart it, then test the selected visibility behavior.
Set up automatic scene changes in OBS
Advanced Scene Switcher uses macros that combine conditions and actions. For a time-based schedule, create a date/time condition for each daypart and pair it with an action that switches to the corresponding scene.

- Prepare the scenes. In OBS, create a scene for each scheduled block, such as “Morning” and “Evening.” Add the media sources and any other scene elements each block needs.
- Install and check the plugin. Install Advanced Scene Switcher for your operating system. Before installation, check its current listing for compatibility with your OBS version. At the time the documentation was accessed on October 3, 2026, the listing identified release 1.36.1, a minimum OBS Studio version of 31.1.1, and Windows, macOS, and Linux support. These details can change.
- Create a macro for each block. In Advanced Scene Switcher, add a macro with a date/time condition for the intended boundary and a scene-switch action targeting the prepared scene. Repeat for the other dayparts and boundaries in your schedule.
- Check clock and timezone. Confirm the computer’s clock, timezone, and the times entered in the conditions agree. A correct rule evaluated against an unexpected local clock can switch at the wrong hour.
- Test the schedule before relying on it. Verify the scene selected at each boundary, whether media continues or restarts, audio continuity, and source visibility and playback behavior. Keep OBS connected to YouTube during the test.
Keep the stream connected and verify the handoffs
A scene-switch rule changes the OBS program output; it does not guarantee that the encoder or YouTube connection will remain uninterrupted. The documented settings describe configurable behavior, not a guarantee that a particular computer, plugin setup, or network will run unattended without interruption.
- Check that each scene shows the intended source and that the source is playing as expected.
- Listen across each boundary for missing, overlapping, or abruptly restarted audio.
- Confirm the encoder remains connected to the intended YouTube stream while the scene changes.
- Test the actual loop, shuffle, and source visibility settings you plan to use; do not assume a hidden source will keep its place.
Common scheduling problems and fixes
A scene does not change at the expected hour
Check the computer clock and timezone, then review the macro’s date/time condition and its scene-switch action. Confirm the plugin is compatible with the installed OBS version and that the macro is enabled.

The playlist restarts or stops after a scene change
Review the VLC source’s visibility behavior and test whether hiding the source stops, pauses, or continues playback under the chosen setting. If a scene transition must preserve playback, configure and test that behavior before the stream is unattended.
The picture changes but audio is interrupted
Inspect the audio sources in both scenes and listen to a test handoff. If the same program audio should span scenes, make sure the scene design and source behavior preserve it through the transition.

The scheduled content is right but the YouTube event is not live
Scene macros do not start or schedule the YouTube broadcast. Check the broadcast’s event schedule separately and confirm that OBS is sending its feed to the intended stream.
