HandBrake converts a video file; it does not broadcast it or keep a YouTube stream live. To loop a video on YouTube Live, convert it to a compatible file, add that file to an OBS Studio Media Source with Loop enabled, and stream from OBS to YouTube. Set the live bitrate and other encoder settings separately from HandBrake’s export settings, and test using the upload connection you will actually use.
What HandBrake does—and what it does not
HandBrake prepares a local video file for playback and streaming. OBS Studio sends that file as a live stream; YouTube receives the stream. In this workflow, HandBrake is the converter, OBS is the live encoder, and YouTube Live is the destination.
HandBrake’s current Creator presets use MP4, H.264 video and AAC stereo audio, and are described as suitable for video-hosting services including YouTube. Its default Fast 1080p30 preset is a reasonable starting point for beginners, but a preset can change resolution, frame rate or audio layout. Convert the video in HandBrake
1. Install HandBrake from an official source
HandBrake’s download page listed version 1.11.2 as current when checked; the latest version can change, so confirm the version on the official HandBrake downloads page before installing. The HandBrake team identifies handbrake.fr, its GitHub project and Flathub as official download locations. HandBrake is free and runs locally without an account; you do not need a paid converter for this workflow.

2. Open the source and select a preset
Open your video in HandBrake, then choose a preset suited to its source quality and intended stream. Fast 1080p30 is a straightforward starting point. For a YouTube-oriented output, Creator presets provide MP4 with H.264 video and AAC stereo audio. Choose a resolution and frame rate that make sense for the original footage and the stream you can reliably send; selecting a preset may downscale the picture or limit its frame rate.
3. Check the export before encoding
Before starting the encode, confirm the output dimensions, frame rate, audio tracks and save location. Pay particular attention to audio: a preset that does not include surround sound may encode only stereo and discard discrete surround channels. If you need a particular audio layout, verify the selected preset and output settings before encoding.

The HandBrake export bitrate or quality setting controls the local file encode. It is not the same as the live bitrate OBS sends to YouTube. Pick export settings for a file that plays reliably and retains the quality you need; set the live encoder separately.
Add the converted file to OBS and enable looping
- Open OBS Studio and create or select the scene you will use for the stream.
- In the scene’s Sources panel, add a Media Source.
- Select the converted video file stored on your computer.
- Enable the Media Source’s Loop property so playback starts again when it reaches the end.
- Confirm the video appears in the preview and that its audio is reaching the OBS audio meters.

Configure OBS and YouTube Live separately
Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard if you need help with an initial setup, then verify your selected stream service, audio and video. OBS’s quick-start guide recommends testing before a first stream. OBS Quick Start Guide
For the live connection, YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 for video; AAC or MP3 for audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended keyframe frequency of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. For H.264, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are live ingest recommendations, not HandBrake file-export targets. Use the settings appropriate to your encoder and check YouTube’s current guidance for other resolutions, frame rates and codecs. YouTube Live encoder settings

These recommendations do not guarantee a stable stream at a given location or on a particular Indian ISP plan. Test the real upload connection you will stream from, and choose a live bitrate and quality it can sustain reliably.

- Start a short private or otherwise suitable test stream using the intended OBS scene and connection.
- Watch the video through the loop point to confirm playback restarts as expected.
- Check the OBS audio meters and listen to the stream to confirm the audio plays and remains in sync.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health and adjust the live settings if the connection is unstable.
YouTube advises testing audio, video motion and stream health. A test is especially useful for spotting a file that will not play as expected, a missing audio track, or a live bitrate the connection cannot sustain. YouTube Live encoder settings

Common problems and fixes
- The video ends instead of looping: Open the Media Source properties in OBS and enable Loop. Confirm you selected the intended file.
- The stream is unstable or YouTube reports health problems: Test upload capacity on the connection you will use, then lower the live bitrate or choose a less demanding resolution or frame rate. A HandBrake export bitrate does not set OBS’s live bitrate.
- The output looks softer or moves less smoothly than the source: Check the HandBrake preset’s output dimensions and frame rate. A preset may downscale or limit frame rate; select settings appropriate to your source and intended stream.
- Surround channels are missing: Check whether the selected preset encodes only stereo. Presets that do not include surround sound may discard discrete surround channels.
- The picture plays but the stream is silent: Confirm the exported file has the intended audio track, check OBS audio meters, and listen during the test stream.
- The file is too large for available storage: Check the space available for both the original and converted files before encoding. An external SSD is optional if local storage is insufficient; it is not required for conversion or looping.
