To play different prerecorded videos at set times on a 24/7 YouTube channel, schedule a YouTube Live event in YouTube Studio, then use an encoder or cloud service that can select playlist items and switch them on a timetable. YouTube Studio schedules the event; it does not itself switch between video files. For a do-it-yourself setup, a computer-based encoder must stay running and online. For a cloud option, StreamNeo runs an uploaded video or playlist without keeping your computer on.

What you need to schedule video changes

There are two separate jobs: YouTube creates and presents the live event, while an encoder sends the video feed. The encoder or streaming service must also provide the timed playlist automation that changes from one prerecorded file to another. YouTube’s published encoder guidance explains scheduling and connecting an encoder, but does not describe a clock-based switcher for prerecorded files. Check that your chosen encoder or service explicitly supports scheduled playlist changes before building your workflow.

  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream.
  • Prerecorded video files and a playlist or schedule describing what should play and when.
  • An encoder or cloud service that supports playlists and timed transitions, and can send a continuous feed to YouTube.
  • A stream URL and private stream key from YouTube Studio.
  • A plan for monitoring, interruptions, restarts, and archive handling.

Check that the channel can go live

YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance for current requirements. Availability and rules can change, so check the channel and current help page before planning a launch.

Build a do-it-yourself scheduled playlist

1. Create the YouTube Live event

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
  2. Open Manage and schedule a stream. Set its title, visibility, description, and other event details. Scheduling gives viewers an upcoming event page where they can find it and, where available, opt into reminders; it does not schedule changes to the video feed.
  3. Open the event’s stream settings and copy its stream URL and stream key. The URL is the destination for the encoder; the key identifies the stream. Treat the key like a password. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder. See YouTube’s live stream settings help.

2. Configure an encoder to switch files

Choose software that can play a playlist and switch items at the times you specify. Enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in its streaming or output settings, and configure the playlist schedule in that encoder. The exact controls depend on the software: YouTube’s documentation does not prescribe an encoder interface or a universal method for timed file changes. Confirm whether schedules use your computer’s local time or another time zone, how a transition behaves if a file runs long, and what happens when the playlist ends.

A software encoder is an option YouTube documents, but a computer running it must remain powered, connected to the internet, and able to supply the media continuously. YouTube does not specify a minimum computer model or configuration for this workflow. A hardware encoder is another option; YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events, but dedicated hardware is not required for every scheduled stream. Before buying a hardware encoder for YouTube Live, verify that its protocol, supported resolution, playlist scheduling, and restart behavior fit your specific setup.

3. Choose the ingest protocol and quality

YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Set the encoder to a protocol it and YouTube both support. Match resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings to YouTube’s current recommendations and to the capabilities of your upload connection and encoder. The supported values depend on the chosen quality and configuration; consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guide rather than applying a single bitrate to every video.

YouTube transcodes live streams for viewers on different devices and network conditions. Test the actual files and output before relying on the channel around the clock. HLS is an alternative ingest path for certain codec or HDR requirements, not something a timed playlist needs by default. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP and documents requirements including TS segments, a rolling playlist, and segment durations between 1 and 4 seconds. Use it only when the encoder and use case require it; see YouTube’s HLS setup guide.

4. Test the schedule and start streaming

  1. Load the planned videos into the encoder or service playlist and set the intended change times.
  2. Start sending the feed before the scheduled event. In Live Control Room, check that the preview appears and that the event is receiving video and audio.
  3. Watch at least one transition between files. Check that the next item starts as intended, audio is present, and the feed does not freeze or go black during the switch.
  4. Confirm that the event is accessible with its intended visibility and that the schedule is using the expected time zone.
  5. When the preview and settings are correct, go live according to the encoder and event workflow. Keep an operator or alerting plan in place to catch problems.

YouTube advises testing before an event, checking the preview, monitoring audio and video quality, and confirming accessibility. Its practical guidance is in the encoder settings guide and YouTube live-streaming tips.

Plan for a true 24/7 operation

Do not assume one event will archive indefinitely

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that a single uninterrupted 24/7 event will automatically produce an archive in the same way, nor does it describe a method to extend that archive condition. Plan how you will handle stream restarts and recordings, and confirm current YouTube behavior before depending on an archive. The encoder workflow help covers scheduling and archiving.

Decide how the system will recover

A 24/7 schedule needs more than a playlist. Decide how you will detect a dropped YouTube connection, restart the encoder, resume the correct playlist item, and notify someone if recovery fails. Keep backup content or a fallback source available if uninterrupted programming matters. The implementation differs by encoder or service; YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe a complete 24/7 monitoring or recovery design.

Choose where the encoder runs

Approach Playlist scheduling What must stay running What to verify
Software encoder on a computer Only if the selected software supports timed playlist changes; YouTube Studio does not provide this switcher. The computer, encoder, media files, and internet connection. Schedule controls, time zone, transition behavior, reconnection, and restart handling.
Hardware encoder Depends on the device; confirm it supports the required timed playlists. The encoder and network connection, plus whatever storage or media source it uses. Protocol, resolution, playlist automation, and behavior after a network or power interruption.
Cloud streaming service Depends on the service; verify timed switching and playlist support directly. The service handles the streaming operation in the cloud; you still need to configure and monitor the channel. Supported YouTube workflow, schedule controls, storage, recovery, and costs for the required duration and quality.

YouTube lists software, hardware, and third-party services as encoder options, including AWS Elemental MediaLive. Being listed does not establish that a particular service supports your exact timed playlist, suits your budget, or includes a specific recovery feature. Check the vendor’s current documentation before choosing. For a computer-based setup, plan for the cost and effort of keeping the machine and connection available; YouTube’s sources do not quantify those costs or compare reliability among these approaches.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • The event is not eligible to go live: Check channel verification, age eligibility, and any live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days against YouTube’s current eligibility guidance.
  • The encoder will not connect: Confirm you copied the correct event’s stream URL and key, selected a supported protocol, and did not reset the key without updating the encoder. Keep the key private; reset it in Live Control Room if compromised.
  • The preview is black or has no sound: Confirm the encoder is actually sending the intended file and audio, then check its output settings and the Live Control Room preview before going live.
  • The video stutters or drops frames: Check the upload connection and encoder load, then compare the selected resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with YouTube’s current recommendations and the connection’s capacity. Run another test at the intended settings.
  • The playlist changes at the wrong time: Check the encoder’s schedule time zone, clock, and transition rules. YouTube Studio schedules the event but does not control the playlist switch time.
  • The stream stops or resumes at the wrong place: Inspect the encoder or service’s reconnection and playlist-resume behavior, and decide how an operator or alert will detect a failed recovery. YouTube does not document a universal recovery procedure for third-party encoders.
  • There is no expected archive: Check the event duration and current YouTube archive guidance. YouTube’s stated automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours; do not assume it guarantees an archive of a 24/7 event.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

Scheduling a video as a live feed does not remove the need to have rights to the video, music, images, and other material it contains. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream policies for every item in the playlist, and do not assume that permission to upload a recording automatically covers every use or territory. Repeatedly streaming reused material can also raise channel-monetization questions; eligibility and enforcement depend on YouTube’s current policies and review of the channel. A checklist can help you assess rights before scheduling: StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist.
