You can schedule separate weekday and weekend YouTube Live broadcasts, but YouTube Studio does not schedule a YouTube playlist to become the live video feed or automatically switch between playlists by day. Schedule the broadcasts in YouTube Studio, then use an encoder or other production workflow to send the correct, rights-cleared cartoon lineup for each one.
What YouTube scheduling does—and does not—do
A scheduled YouTube Live broadcast is an event with its own watch page, date, time, and settings. A YouTube playlist is a collection of videos; it is not a live playout schedule. YouTube’s scheduling guidance describes creating a broadcast and connecting an encoder, but does not document a native weekday/weekend switch that takes videos from selected YouTube playlists and puts them into a live feed. Adding episodes to playlists alone will not create a timed cartoon channel.
You therefore need two parts: scheduled broadcast events in YouTube Studio, and a program feed produced by an encoder or other playout system. For a small number of slots, you can prepare the appropriate lineup and select it before each broadcast. For unattended switching, verify that any chosen playout system can run the required day-and-time schedule and send the resulting feed to YouTube Live. The YouTube Live Streaming API can manage scheduled broadcasts and lifecycle settings; that fact alone does not mean it selects playlist items or provides media playout.
Prepare the schedule and program feed
1. Confirm live streaming is enabled
Check that the channel can go live before building the schedule. YouTube says first-time live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the day of the first broadcast.

2. Create separate weekday and weekend broadcasts
- In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule Stream.
- Create the weekday event with its intended date and time, title, description, privacy, and audience setting.
- Create a separate weekend event with its own date and time and the weekend-specific details.
- Reuse settings from a prior event where appropriate, then review the details for each event rather than assuming the weekday information is right for the weekend.
Make the schedule clear to viewers, including the time zone. YouTube recommends keeping a consistent, sustainable schedule and communicating changes.
3. Prepare the correct lineup outside the YouTube playlist
In your encoder or production system, arrange the episodes that should play during each slot. Confirm the order, transitions, audio, and intended end point. The exact controls depend on the encoder or playout system you choose; do not assume that creating a YouTube playlist configures those controls. If using custom software, treat broadcast management and media playout as separate functions unless the software documentation explicitly establishes both.

4. Connect the encoder to the scheduled event
Use the stream URL and stream key shown for the intended broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room, following YouTube’s encoder instructions. A stream key grants access to send a feed to the channel: keep it private, and do not place it in a public document or share it with people who should not control the stream.
5. Preview and start with time to check the feed
YouTube advises setting up encoders at least two hours before a scheduled event and starting them at least 15 minutes before it. Check the Live Control Room preview before the event begins: confirm that the right weekday or weekend lineup is playing, the picture and sound are present, and the selected broadcast is the one you intended. This is particularly important when two recurring events have similar titles.

6. Decide how the broadcast and archive should end
Set an end plan in your production workflow and check the broadcast after the show. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; streams longer than that may not be archived. Do not rely on an archive as the only copy of a program you need to retain.
Choose a workflow for recurring switches
- Manual operation: Prepare each lineup and select it before its scheduled broadcast. This gives you direct control but requires someone to perform and verify the change.
- Automated playout: Use a system only after confirming that it supports the required weekday/weekend times, time zone, episode order, YouTube delivery, and recovery after a machine or connection failure. Scheduling the YouTube event alone does not establish any of these media-playout capabilities.
- Custom integration: The YouTube Live Streaming API can manage scheduled broadcasts and lifecycle settings. A separate component still needs to provide the cartoon program feed unless the chosen implementation documents that capability.
Clear rights and set the audience accurately
Confirm live-stream rights for every episode
Only stream cartoons you own or are authorized to broadcast, with rights that cover the intended territory, duration, and live use. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. If it identifies content, a placeholder may replace the stream; if the issue remains, the stream can be interrupted or terminated. YouTube advises creators with licensed third-party material to ask the rights holder to add their channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming if the channel is not allowlisted.

Set made-for-kids status based on the actual program
Do not classify a stream as made for kids merely because it contains cartoons. Set the audience designation based on the content and intended audience. YouTube lists live chat and reminder notifications among the features disabled for live streams made for kids, and personalized ads are disabled. Account for those limits when describing the event to viewers.
Keep playlist labels accurate
YouTube’s playlist policy can apply when titles or descriptions mislead viewers about the videos or when videos are collected in a prohibited way. Describe the schedule and lineup honestly, and do not use a playlist or event title that promises episodes the stream will not show.

Troubleshoot common scheduling problems
- The broadcast starts, but the wrong episodes play: The YouTube event and media lineup are separate. Check the encoder or playout system’s selected playlist, schedule, and time zone before sending the feed.
- A YouTube playlist appears on the channel but is not live: A playlist organizes uploaded videos; it does not supply the live program feed. Configure an encoder or playout workflow to send the episodes.
- The event is scheduled but has no incoming video: Check that the encoder is running and that it is using the stream URL and key for the intended event. Check the Live Control Room preview before the start time.
- A licensed cartoon is replaced or the live stream is interrupted: YouTube may detect a third-party match. Confirm that your rights cover live streaming and ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting for your channel.
- Viewers cannot use chat or reminders: Check the audience designation. YouTube disables live chat and reminder notifications for streams made for kids.
- The archive is missing after a long broadcast: YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours; longer streams may not be archived. Plan to keep a separate recording if retention matters.
