You need to configure both the YouTube event and the encoder host: schedule the livestream in YouTube Studio, then arrange for your encoder to launch and start streaming after the server reboots. With OBS, the documented --startstreaming launch parameter starts streaming when OBS opens. On Linux, an enabled systemd service can launch a process at boot, while a restart policy can handle certain process exits. These pieces do not guarantee that a scheduled YouTube event will go public without a manual action: YouTube’s encoder workflow calls for checking the preview and clicking Go live, while a separate Auto-start setting can allow encoder-controlled starting. Test the exact setup with a private or unlisted event before relying on it.
What has to happen automatically
There are two separate jobs. YouTube Studio creates and manages the scheduled event; the server must start an encoder such as OBS and send it video and audio after boot. Scheduling alone does not start an encoder on your server. Nor does an encoder process starting necessarily mean the scheduled event is already public: the YouTube workflow and Auto-start setting affect that final step.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted form of RTMP, when the encoder supports it. The protocol you can use depends on encoder compatibility. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup and troubleshooting instructions.
Schedule the YouTube event and configure the encoder
- Create the event: In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live → Manage, schedule a stream, and set the event’s title, privacy, date, time, and other details. Scheduling can create an upcoming page where viewers can opt in to notifications. Follow YouTube’s encoder workflow if labels or steps differ in your Studio interface.
- Get the ingest details: In Live Control Room, find the stream URL and key for the scheduled event. Use the event’s intended key and ingest settings in your encoder. YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private.
- Set the encoder output: Enter the URL and key in the encoder’s stream settings. Avoid putting the key in a public script repository, screenshots, shared command history, or logs that others can read. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Choose the YouTube start behavior: YouTube’s scheduled-stream encoder instructions describe waiting for the preview in Live Control Room and clicking Go live. The separate live stream settings documentation describes Auto-start & auto-stop, which can let the encoder control start and stop. Do not assume scheduling alone removes the manual Go live action. Confirm the behavior for your event and settings in a test.
Make OBS start streaming when the server boots
OBS documents --startstreaming as a launch parameter that starts streaming when OBS launches. The parameter solves the encoder-start action, not the whole server deployment: OBS still needs a usable user session, configured sources, available media and devices, network access, and a suitable encoder configuration.

- Configure OBS first: Set up the scene or media source, audio, encoder, and YouTube stream details. Confirm the intended output works before automating it.
- Use the launch parameter: Arrange for OBS to open with
--startstreaming. Follow the OBS launch-parameter documentation for your operating system. OBS notes a working-directory consideration for automated or scheduled launches on Windows; use its instructions rather than assuming a shortcut or task runs in the right directory. - Configure boot launch: On a Linux host, you can use systemd to arrange for a service to start at boot. The unit’s command and user/session setup depend on how OBS and its sources are installed on that host; the systemd and OBS documentation do not provide one universal, tested headless OBS service unit.
- Verify after an actual reboot: Check that the service and OBS started, that the expected scene and audio sources are available, and that YouTube receives a healthy preview for the intended scheduled event. Confirm whether the event still requires Go live or starts through the enabled Auto-start behavior.
On Linux, distinguish boot enablement from restart policy
These systemd settings address different events. Enabling a unit arranges for it to start at boot; a restart policy governs what systemd does after the managed process exits. A restart policy is not a replacement for enabling boot startup, and systemd documents exceptions, including an intentional stop requested through the service manager. See the systemctl manual and systemd.service manual.
For example, a unit may be enabled for boot and configured with an appropriate restart policy such as Restart=always. That is a configuration choice, not a complete recipe: the correct service command, account, session, environment, source availability, and network readiness vary by host. In particular, OBS may depend on a desktop session or capture devices that are not present after a headless reboot. Validate your own deployment rather than treating a service file as proof that the broadcast will work.

Choose the host and ingest setup that fit the job
| Choice | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS in a desktop or user session | Launches OBS with its configured scenes and sources; --startstreaming starts streaming when the application opens. |
Whether the user session starts after reboot, and whether media, audio/video inputs, graphics, and network are available to it. |
| OBS managed by a Linux systemd service | Can arrange process launch at boot and apply a restart policy to process exits. | The host-specific unit, session and device access, network readiness, logs, and the difference between boot enablement and restart behavior. |
| RTMP ingest | Encoder-compatible stream transport. | Whether the encoder requires or supports the encrypted RTMPS option. |
| RTMPS ingest | YouTube’s encrypted RTMP option. | Use it when supported by the selected encoder; consult YouTube’s RTMPS compatibility troubleshooting if it fails. |
Test the complete workflow before broadcasting publicly
A reboot test should verify the chain, not just whether OBS opens. Use a private or unlisted test event and check the event, encoder, preview, and start behavior together. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend setting up encoders at least two hours before a stream and starting them at least 15 minutes before the event; these are operational recommendations, not guarantees of recovery or successful unattended startup.
- Reboot the actual host and confirm the intended service or launch mechanism runs.
- Check that the correct scene or recording, audio, and other sources are present after reboot.
- Confirm YouTube receives a healthy preview for the correct scheduled event and key.
- Determine whether Auto-start removes the manual Go live step in your configuration; do not infer this from the scheduled time alone.
- Check the outgoing video settings against YouTube’s recommendations for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance rather than applying one bitrate to every output format.
- Monitor the stream once live, including audio, video, and stream health.
Troubleshoot common reboot and startup failures
OBS opens, but streaming does not start
Check that the launch includes --startstreaming and that the command is actually the one run at boot. Then verify OBS’s stream configuration and that its sources are ready. The parameter starts streaming when OBS launches; it does not configure YouTube or make unavailable devices appear.

The encoder is sending video, but the scheduled event is not live
Check Live Control Room for the stream preview and the event’s start behavior. YouTube’s encoder workflow includes a manual Go live step; confirm that Auto-start & auto-stop is configured and behaves as intended before expecting the encoder to start the public event by itself.
The process does not launch after reboot
Check whether boot startup is configured, whether the service is enabled, and whether the configured user and environment can run OBS. Inspect the host’s service logs and confirm the command, working directory, session, and source dependencies. A restart policy handles qualifying process exits; it does not enable a unit at boot.

The process starts, then stops or cannot access sources
Check whether OBS requires a desktop session, display, media path, audio device, capture device, GPU, or permissions that are unavailable to the boot-time service. Adjust the deployment for the actual host and repeat the reboot test with the sources you will use on air.
YouTube rejects the connection or the stream key
Confirm the event’s ingest URL and key in Live Control Room, and make sure the encoder is using the matching details. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update OBS. If using RTMPS, check encoder compatibility and YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance.
