How to Schedule a YouTube 24/7 Playlist with a Linux systemd Timer

A systemd timer can start FFmpeg on schedule, but YouTube’s broadcast and live transition still need separate verification. Here’s how to plan the service, timer, playlist, and checks.

You can use a Linux systemd timer to start an FFmpeg service at a chosen time, with FFmpeg sending a playlist to a scheduled YouTube broadcast. These are separate jobs: the timer starts your local encoder, but that alone does not prove the YouTube event is live to viewers. YouTube’s encoder workflow says to wait for the preview and click Go live. Plan for that platform-side step, verify the result in Live Control Room, and decide how your broadcast will handle event endings and recovery.

Understand what the timer will—and will not—do

A 24/7 broadcast involves three parts:

  • YouTube broadcast: the event and watch page viewers visit.
  • FFmpeg encoder: the process that reads your media and sends a live feed.
  • systemd timer and service: the timer activates a service; the service runs your encoder command.

Google’s Live Streaming API distinguishes a liveBroadcast resource from a liveStream resource, with a stream bound to a broadcast. In practical terms, starting FFmpeg does not by itself establish that the correct event is receiving the feed, that YouTube has previewed it, or that viewers can watch it. See the YouTube Live Streaming API reference.

YouTube’s documented encoder workflow is to schedule or select a stream in Live Control Room, connect the encoder using the current server URL and stream key, wait for the preview, then click Go live. Account workflows and interface labels can change, so confirm what your own event shows before relying on an unattended start. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Schedule the broadcast and get its current ingest details

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, then Manage, and choose Schedule stream.
  2. Set the event’s title, visibility, start time, and other applicable event settings. The scheduled event gives viewers an upcoming watch page and a chance to set a reminder.
  3. Open the event’s stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key currently shown there. Do not reuse a URL or key from an old tutorial or a different event without checking.
  4. Use the RTMPS endpoint shown by Live Control Room when supported. YouTube describes RTMPS as an encrypted ingest option and advises creators to use the RTMPS URL provided there. Its RTMPS help page also covers connection troubleshooting.
  5. Treat the stream key like a password. Keep it out of public examples, source control, screenshots, and broadly readable files. Use a restricted credential file or the credential mechanism supported by your Linux distribution, and ensure logs and backups containing connection details are not publicly accessible.

Prepare and test the playlist with FFmpeg

Do not put an untested command straight into a timer. First test the exact media and FFmpeg build you intend to run, interactively, while watching the scheduled event’s preview. FFmpeg options and supported components vary by build; its official documentation and all-in-one reference are the places to check the options available on your host.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose how to represent the playlist

  • One assembled file: prepare the intended sequence as a single media file, then have FFmpeg read it. This makes ordering explicit, but requires preparing and storing the assembled file.
  • Several files: use a playlist or concat approach appropriate to the formats and codecs. Confirm ordering, transitions, audio continuity, and how updates to the list will be applied. Do not assume files with different codecs or stream layouts will join cleanly.

Looping behavior depends on the input method, media, and installed FFmpeg build. Choose and test the method that fits your files rather than copying a generic loop command. Confirm the video and audio remain present through a full cycle, that the output is accepted by YouTube, and that the stream does not stop at the end of the playlist.

Check the outgoing feed

  • Use the exact server URL and stream key from this event, in the destination format your FFmpeg setup requires.
  • Check that the selected output container, codecs, resolution, frame rate, and audio are compatible with the media and the ingest workflow.
  • Confirm the playlist’s end-of-file behavior: it should continue in the way you intend, not exit after one pass or leave a frozen frame or silent feed.
  • Keep the command in the foreground when testing. Record the actual command and its working directory, but redact the key before saving or sharing logs.

There is no single FFmpeg playlist command that is safe to prescribe for every combination of media, codec, and FFmpeg build. For the same reason, a configuration that starts successfully is not sufficient validation: inspect the YouTube preview and playback as well.

Create a systemd service for the tested encoder

The service is the long-running process. A timer does not play the playlist or check its media; it only activates the associated service. The following unit is a structural example, not a drop-in encoder configuration. Replace the wrapper path and service account with values for your host. The wrapper should retrieve credentials securely and run the exact FFmpeg command you tested.

Have /usr/local/bin/start-youtube-playlist run FFmpeg in the foreground rather than backgrounding it. Keep the playlist and wrapper readable by the service account, but restrict access to credentials. The illustrative Restart=on-failure and delay request a restart after a process failure; they cannot detect every case where FFmpeg remains running but YouTube playback is unhealthy.

Check your distribution’s installed systemd documentation before using or extending unit directives. Timer syntax, missed-run behavior, and other details can depend on the installed version and configuration.

Create a timer for the intended start time

Save a timer unit beside the service with the same base name—for example, youtube-playlist.timer for youtube-playlist.service. This example shows a single calendar start; change the date and time to your intended local schedule and validate the expression on your system.

Description=Start the YouTube playlist encoder

[Timer]
OnCalendar=2026-10-05 09:00:00
Unit=youtube-playlist.service

[Install]
WantedBy=timers.target

When you need recurring starts instead, choose an OnCalendar expression that matches the intended schedule and test how it behaves on the target host. A timer firing again does not create a new YouTube event, stop an already-running encoder, or hand off between broadcasts. A continuous service and repeated scheduled events are different operating plans.

Load and enable the units

  1. Put the service and timer files in the systemd unit directory used by your distribution.
  2. Run sudo systemctl daemon-reload after adding or changing unit files.
  3. Use systemd-analyze calendar '2026-10-05 09:00:00' if available on your installation to inspect how systemd parses the example calendar expression; confirm the result against your installed manual and intended timezone.
  4. Enable the timer to activate it at boot with sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-playlist.timer.
  5. Inspect the schedule with systemctl list-timers youtube-playlist.timer and the unit state with systemctl status youtube-playlist.timer youtube-playlist.service.

The sample expression is an absolute date and time, not a recurring daily schedule. If the host is off at the scheduled time, whether and when a missed activation is handled depends on timer configuration and systemd behavior; verify that on your host rather than assuming the event will start later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify the broadcast at YouTube

When the timer fires, check both Linux and YouTube. A successful service state or active FFmpeg process only confirms local activity; it does not prove the event is playable to viewers.

  1. Check systemctl status youtube-playlist.service and inspect recent service messages with journalctl -u youtube-playlist.service.
  2. Open the scheduled event in Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed and that the preview shows moving video and audible, continuous sound.
  3. Follow the event workflow shown in the account. YouTube’s help instructions say to wait for the preview and click Go live; do not assume the systemd timer performs that platform action.
  4. Open the viewer-facing watch page from a separate device or network and confirm that playback works there. Check it again after the playlist loops or changes content.

A public operator report describes FFmpeg continuing to run while platform playback was frozen. That is an individual incident report, not evidence that every deployment behaves this way, but it illustrates why local process checks alone are not end-to-end monitoring. See the operator’s 24/7 streaming repository.

Plan event length, recovery, and rights

Do not assume one event runs forever

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive statement, not a guarantee that an event near that duration will remain uninterrupted, nor proof that one broadcast can stay live indefinitely. The available platform guidance does not establish a universal event handoff strategy for 24/7 operation. Decide whether you will operate one long event or multiple events, and confirm current duration and restart behavior in your own account before depending on it.

Separate process recovery from stream recovery

A systemd restart policy can respond when the FFmpeg process exits in a way the policy treats as a failure. It cannot necessarily detect a frozen or otherwise unhealthy platform feed while the process stays active. Decide who will inspect YouTube stream health, what should happen after a failed event, and how a new event will be selected and taken live. A timer alone is not a complete recovery or monitoring plan.

Documentary content needs rights checks

Before looping a documentary, archive recording, soundtrack, or other material, confirm that you have the necessary rights for the content and its audio. Review YouTube’s current copyright and reused-content rules for your intended use; neither a timer nor a successful ingest grants permission or guarantees monetization. StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist can help you organize a pre-stream review.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely issue What to check
Timer is enabled but the service did not start Calendar expression, unit loading, host state, or timer activation Run systemctl list-timers, inspect timer status and logs, confirm the host was on at the scheduled time, and check the installed systemd manual for missed-run behavior.
Service starts but FFmpeg exits Wrong executable or paths, permissions, unsupported media, or invalid ingest configuration Read journalctl -u youtube-playlist.service; verify the service user can read the playlist and wrapper, and repeat the tested command interactively with the current event values.
FFmpeg runs but YouTube has no preview Wrong or stale server URL/key, protocol mismatch, connectivity, or wrong event binding Compare the endpoint and key with the event’s current Live Control Room settings. Use the supplied RTMPS endpoint when supported and consult YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance, including its advice about protocol, server address, and port 443 where applicable.
Preview appears, but viewers cannot watch The event may still be awaiting the platform-side live transition, or playback may be unhealthy Follow the event workflow in Live Control Room, including Go live if required, then check the viewer-facing watch page rather than relying only on FFmpeg output.
Playlist stops or becomes silent after a cycle The chosen loop or playlist method does not fit the media or FFmpeg build Test a full cycle interactively, check ordering and audio continuity, and revise the playlist method for the actual files and build.
systemd restarts FFmpeg but the watch page remains frozen The process may still be active while platform playback is unhealthy Check YouTube stream health and viewer playback, not just service status; define an operator response and event-restart procedure.
