To send a video or camera feed to YouTube Live from Dockerized FFmpeg, create or select a stream in YouTube Studio, copy its server URL and stream key, make the input available inside the container, and have FFmpeg publish to the supplied endpoint. Check the Live Control Room preview before making the event public. Docker changes where FFmpeg runs; it does not change how YouTube’s stream key works.
Before you start: make sure YouTube Live is available
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so check YouTube Studio before treating a failed connection as an FFmpeg or Docker problem. These eligibility and activation details are from YouTube Help; the pages do not state a publication year.
You will also need FFmpeg in a container build that includes the codecs and protocols used by your command, an input the container can access, and sufficient outbound network access to reach YouTube’s ingestion server. The exact image, mount syntax, and secret-delivery method depend on your Docker setup; there is no single Docker command that applies to every image or deployment.
Create or select a YouTube stream and get its key
- Open YouTube Studio. Choose Create → Go Live, then use the Stream tab to create a stream or select a scheduled one. YouTube may reuse settings and keys when you reuse stream settings.
- Copy the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. The server URL identifies the ingestion endpoint; the key is the credential that authorizes your encoder to publish. YouTube describes stream keys as like a stream’s “password and address.”
- Choose the event’s visibility and timing. A scheduled stream provides a preview and Go Live workflow. For a test that should not be public, use private or unlisted visibility as appropriate to the event.
Keep the key private. Do not put a real key in a public repository, screenshots, shared logs, or a container configuration that others can read. Treat it as a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to publish to the stream.

Make the input available inside the container
For a video file
FFmpeg resolves file paths from inside its own environment. A file on the host is not automatically visible at the same path inside a container. Configure your chosen Docker deployment to make the media available to the container, then use the corresponding in-container path as the FFmpeg input. Confirm the file is readable there before starting the stream.
For a camera or other live source
The container must be able to access the particular capture device, network source, or other input. Device permissions and networking are deployment-specific. Confirm that FFmpeg can open the source from inside the container; the YouTube key cannot solve an input-access problem.

Publish with FFmpeg
For a file input, this is an illustrative command pattern, not a tested command for a particular Docker image:
ffmpeg -re -i /media/input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv "$YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"

Replace the example input path and endpoint/key variables with values available to FFmpeg in your deployment. The URL may be supplied as separate server and stream-name fields by some clients; FFmpeg’s RTMP publishing pattern commonly combines the endpoint and stream name in the output address. Check the exact URL/key format shown for your YouTube stream and supported by your FFmpeg build. Do not paste a real key into a command that will be saved in shell history or exposed in process listings or logs; use an appropriate secret-handling method for your deployment.
-re reads a file at its native rate, which is useful when publishing prerecorded media in real time. -i specifies the input, the codec options select video and audio encoding, and -f flv selects the FLV output format commonly used with RTMP publishing. The selected FFmpeg build must support the requested codecs and protocol. Adapt encoding options to the source and YouTube’s current encoder requirements; this example does not prescribe a bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or keyframe interval.

Choose RTMP or RTMPS using the supplied endpoint
Use the ordinary RTMP endpoint if that is what Live Control Room provides. If you want encrypted transport, select the RTMPS endpoint explicitly. YouTube’s RTMPS documentation specifies TLS/SSL and port 443; the default displayed URL may still be ordinary RTMP. FFmpeg documents RTMPS as encrypted RTMP. Do not change the scheme, port, or endpoint by guesswork: use the endpoint supplied for the stream and ensure the FFmpeg build supports it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Start, preview, and take the stream live
- Start FFmpeg in the container and inspect its output for input, encoding, and connection errors. Avoid sharing logs until you have checked that they do not expose the key.
- Wait for the stream to appear in YouTube Live Control Room. Verify the preview, picture, and audio before starting a public event.
- For a scheduled event, use the YouTube Studio workflow to confirm the event is accessible and select Go Live when ready. For a test, keep the visibility appropriate to your audience.
- Plan outbound capacity for the encoded stream. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom after the stream bitrate. A simultaneous primary and backup feed needs additional capacity.
- Stop transmission according to the event workflow when finished. YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive behavior for streams longer than 12 hours.
YouTube recommends testing in advance, checking the preview, confirming event accessibility, and monitoring audio and video quality.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not accept the stream or no preview appears | Wrong server URL or key, an unready channel, or a connection problem | Confirm the selected stream’s endpoint and key in Live Control Room, check channel eligibility and activation status in Studio, and inspect FFmpeg’s connection output. |
| FFmpeg reports that it cannot open the input | The path exists on the host but not inside the container, or the source is inaccessible | Check the exact in-container path, file readability, and any deployment-specific device permissions or network access. |
| The container connects but video or audio is absent or wrong | Input stream selection, source format, or encoding options do not match the media | Check FFmpeg’s input and mapping output, confirm audio/video are present, and adjust encoding options for the source and YouTube’s current requirements. |
| Connection fails when switching to RTMPS | The URL, port, or FFmpeg build does not support the selected encrypted endpoint | Use the RTMPS endpoint shown for the stream, including its specified port, and verify RTMPS support in the FFmpeg build. |
| Video buffers, drops, or becomes unstable | Insufficient or inconsistent outbound bandwidth | Measure available upload capacity under actual network conditions and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom; allow extra capacity for a backup feed. |
| An unexpected publisher appears or the key may have leaked | The stream key was exposed or reused somewhere unsafe | Reset the key in Live Control Room, then update the encoder. YouTube says only channel owners or managers can reset keys. |
