What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes. You can save Snapchat pictures without taking a screenshot. Use Snapchat’s Save button for a new Snap, Export for a picture in Memories, or Save in Chat followed by export for an eligible received Snap. These methods create either Snapchat storage or a copy in your phone’s Photos/Camera Roll; they are not guaranteed to be invisible to other people.
Snapchat’s menu labels can vary by iPhone or Android model, app version, language, region and staged interface rollout. The paths below reflect Snapchat’s support instructions current in August 2026.
Choose the right kind of save
| Option | Where the picture goes | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Save to Memories | Inside Snapchat | You want to edit, organize or share it in Snapchat later. |
| Save to Camera Roll/Photos | Your phone’s native photo library | You need a local file for editing or another app. |
| Memories & Camera Roll | Both locations | The image matters and you want two accessible copies. |
| Save in Chat | Snapchat’s servers, visible in the conversation | An eligible received Snap needs to remain available in the chat before export. |
| Export | A destination you select, such as Photos, Camera Roll, Files or another app | You are downloading an item already in Memories or an item saved in Chat. |
A screenshot is therefore optional, not the standard way to keep a copy. It may also produce a different crop or quality from the original.
Save a new Snap directly to your phone
- Open Snapchat’s Camera screen and take the photo.
- Before sending it, tap the download/save icon at the bottom.
- Snapchat saves the picture according to your current Save Button setting.
To change that default, open your Profile and follow My Account (or My Profile) → Settings → App & Privacy → My App → Memories → Save Button. Choose Memories, Memories & Camera Roll, or Camera Roll. If your labels differ, open Memories and look for Save Button; Snapchat says the wording can vary by interface rollout.

Save a received picture
Received Snaps have different controls from pictures you created. If Snapchat permits retention of the item:
- Open the conversation and view the Snap.
- Press and hold it, then choose Save in Chat if that option appears.
- Open the saved item in the conversation.
- Use the available export or save-to-Camera-Roll control to create a device copy.
Save in Chat is not a download. Snapchat says the saved item remains on its servers until you export it. Everyone in that Chat can see what has been saved, and saved content is visually marked in the conversation. The storage explanation is at When I save a Snap in Chat, where is it stored?; Snapchat’s Chat guidance is available at Snapchat Support.
There is no universal route for every received Snap. Sender settings, content type, expiry and whether the item was already saved can determine which controls appear.
Does saving notify the sender?
Do not treat Snapchat’s save and export tools as a guaranteed stealth method. Snapchat confirms that recipients can take screenshots, while its support guidance confirms that saving in Chat is visible to Chat participants. The official material does not provide one universal rule covering every Camera Roll export, device, sender, recipient and app version.

If privacy or consent matters, ask the sender to share the original through Chat, text, email or another agreed channel. Do not rely on airplane mode, modified clients, screen-recording tricks, reinstalling the app or third-party downloader services to suppress notifications. Such methods are unreliable and can expose your account or private content.

Keep your own saved pictures private inside Snapchat
My Eyes Only is a passcode-protected area in Memories. It is for private storage inside Snapchat, not a secret way to download somebody else’s Snap.
Set up My Eyes Only
- Swipe up from the Camera screen to open Memories.
- Press and hold a Snap, then tap More.
- Tap Hide Snap (My Eyes Only), then Quick Setup.
- Create and confirm a passcode.
- Acknowledge that Snapchat cannot recover the content if you forget the passcode, then tap Finish.
Move existing items
- Open Memories and tap the selector.
- Select the Snaps or Stories.
- Tap Hide Snaps (My Eyes Only), then Move.
- Enter the passcode if requested.
Snapchat says only photo Snaps and videos shorter than 10 seconds can be moved. Resetting a forgotten My Eyes Only passcode deletes the previously protected Snaps. See How does My Eyes Only work? and Snapchat’s Memories privacy information.

If Save or Export is missing
Work through these checks in order:
- Update Snapchat from your device’s app store.
- Check available phone storage.
- Open phone settings and confirm Snapchat has Photos or Media permission.
- Reopen the conversation or Memories.
- Try exporting one item instead of a batch.
- Confirm the item is actually in Memories or saved in Chat.
- Do not delete the original until the copy appears in Photos or Gallery.
A received disappearing Snap may simply be ineligible for retention, expired, or controlled by settings that do not expose a save option. Stories, My Eyes Only items and other Memories sections can also show different controls.
If the exported picture is hard to find
- Check the newest items in Photos/Gallery.
- Look for a Snapchat or Downloads album if your phone creates one.
- Search by the date and time of export.
- Check whether Snapchat asked you to choose a destination instead of automatically using Camera Roll.
- Make sure you completed the export rather than only opening a share sheet.
Protect saved pictures from data loss
Before logging out, changing phones, uninstalling Snapchat or deleting content, confirm that Memories are fully backed up. Export irreplaceable pictures to your phone or another storage location; Memories should not be your only copy.
Snapchat’s support guidance says deleted Memories generally cannot be recovered, and Support may be unable to restore Memories that remain missing. Do not uninstall or log out while a backup problem is unresolved. For account-access situations, Snapchat also documents a desktop accounts-portal route: open My Data, select the data and date range, submit the request, then download it when ready. This is a recovery/data-access option, not the quickest way to save one image. See Snapchat Support.
When asking the sender is the better option
Request the original image when you need its best quality, clear consent or certainty that no disappearing-content restriction applies. The sender can send the picture from their Camera Roll through Snapchat Chat or another agreed service. This usually avoids compression, cropping and uncertainty about what other participants can see.
