1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo stream from Wowza Streaming Engine on a VPS to YouTube Live, send your encoder’s feed to a Wowza live application, then configure a Generic RTMP Stream Target to forward it to YouTube over RTMPS. You’ll need a supported Linux VPS, a valid Wowza license, a YouTube stream URL and key, and enough outbound bandwidth for the encoded stream.
How the relay works
Your encoder sends its live feed to Wowza Streaming Engine, which runs on the VPS. Wowza then forwards that feed to YouTube Live. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP, for this connection. Wowza’s Stream Targets guide describes the forwarding setup; YouTube’s encoder guidance covers destination settings.
This setup relays a live encoder feed; it is not a method for streaming uploaded videos as a continuous loop. The exact steps for sending the incoming feed depend on your encoder protocol and Wowza application configuration.
Choose and prepare the VPS
Wowza lists Red Hat, Ubuntu and SUSE Linux as supported operating systems, with x86_64 and ARM64 (aarch64) supported architectures. 32-bit ARM is unsupported. The current release supports Java 17 or 21. Verify the OS, architecture and Java requirements against the Wowza release you plan to install before provisioning. Wowza’s system requirements are the reference for supported platforms.

Size for the actual workload
Wowza’s 2026 hardware guidance recommends, at minimum for production, a single quad-core CPU at 3.00 GHz or better, 4 GB RAM, a SATA hard drive and a 1 Gbps network connection. Its high-load recommendation is 6 cores at 3.00 GHz or better, 16–32 GB RAM, a SATA SSD and 10 Gbps Ethernet. These are vendor recommendations, not guarantees for an individual VPS.
Choose a VPS based on the stream’s encoded bitrate, number of streams, and whether Wowza will transcode or create multiple renditions. The outbound connection from Wowza to YouTube must sustain the stream bitrate with capacity to spare. YouTube recommends 20% headroom beyond the combined primary and backup bitrate. Provider bandwidth limits and firewall rules also matter; there is no universal VPS plan or viewer-count formula established by these specifications.
Allow only necessary network access
Wowza lists TCP 1935 for RTMP and TCP 443 for TLS streaming, including RTMPS. Configure only the paths required by your deployment and restrict access to administration ports rather than exposing them broadly to the public internet.

Install Wowza Streaming Engine
Wowza’s installation guide references the 4.12.0 Linux installer. The following is its x64 example; Wowza also provides an ARM64 installer. Have a valid license key and choose admin credentials during installation. See Wowza’s Linux installation instructions for the current installer options.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Provision a supported Linux VPS and connect using an account with permission to install software.
- Download the installer appropriate to the VPS architecture. For the Linux x64 4.12.0 example, make it executable and run it:
sudo chmod +x WowzaStreamingEngine-4.12.0-linux-x64-installer.runsudo ./WowzaStreamingEngine-4.12.0-linux-x64-installer.run - Follow the installer prompts, providing your license key and setting the administrator credentials.
- Use the installer’s system-service option if you want Wowza to start automatically after reboot and continue running after you log off.
Verify the service and secure the Manager
The installer defaults to starting the service automatically. Wowza’s guide verifies the server by opening http://[wowza-ip-address]:1935/ServerVersion. Its Manager interface is available at /enginemanager on port 8088 by default. Treat Manager as an administrative interface: restrict who can reach it, and do not leave it open to the public internet without access controls.
Set up the incoming encoder feed
Create or select a Wowza live application and configure your encoder to send its live feed to that application. The incoming setup depends on the encoder’s protocol and the application settings you choose, so confirm the source URL, application and any authentication against your particular configuration. Enable source authentication where appropriate.

Wowza lists RTMP input support for H.264 video and AAC/AAC-LC audio. For a straightforward relay, H.264 video with AAC audio is a broadly compatible choice. Once the encoder is sending, check Wowza’s Incoming Streams view and confirm that the source is active before configuring or diagnosing the YouTube destination.
Create a YouTube destination and protect its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the RTMPS URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube’s URL field may show RTMP until you use the lock control to reveal RTMPS.
- Keep the stream key private: it functions like a password for publishing to your stream. Do not include it in public documentation, screenshots or messages. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.
YouTube’s stream-key guidance explains how to manage the key. Its troubleshooting instructions also emphasize checking that the protocol and server are rtmps, not rtmp. A port can be specified if needed.
Configure the Wowza Stream Target
- In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, open the live application receiving the encoder feed and go to Stream Targets.
- Add a Generic RTMP target. Give it a descriptive name and enter the source stream name and destination details supplied by YouTube in the fields available in your installed Wowza release.
- For an RTMPS destination, open the target’s Advanced settings and set SSL Encryption to True.
- Enable Stream Targets for the application, then save the target.
- Start the source encoder and check the target’s publishing status.
Wowza’s target documentation describes destination application, instance and stream-name fields, while YouTube supplies a URL and key. The field mapping can differ by release or interface; do not assume a universal string-concatenation rule. Use the exact current YouTube RTMPS URL and key in the fields supported by your installation, then confirm publishing in Wowza and check for the preview in YouTube Live Control Room.

Match encoder settings to YouTube
YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video options, up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. For this relay, H.264 with AAC audio is a practical compatibility choice with Wowza’s listed RTMP input formats.
Recommended H.264 video bitrates
The following figures are YouTube’s current recommendations on its encoder settings page, reviewed October 3, 2026. They are guidance for the listed resolution and frame rate, not a requirement that every stream use precisely that bitrate.
| Resolution and frame rate | YouTube recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table also specifies AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. Its advanced guidance lists 128 Kbps stereo audio at a 44.1 kHz sample rate. Choose a video bitrate the encoder and network can sustain; lower resolution or frame rate reduces bandwidth demand.

Test before the event
- Send a test feed with representative movement and sound. A static test image or silent feed can miss problems that appear in real content.
- In Wowza, confirm the incoming stream is Active and the Stream Target is publishing.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, wait for the preview and inspect stream health before going live to your audience.
- Check that outbound capacity remains steady at the chosen bitrate, including the headroom needed for the stream configuration.
Use the Wowza Stream Targets instructions and YouTube encoder guidance if interface labels or available fields differ in your release.
Troubleshoot common failures
The target times out or cannot connect
- Check that you copied the RTMPS URL, not the RTMP URL, and that the destination protocol/server is set to
rtmps. - Confirm the VPS can make outbound TLS connections and that the destination port is reachable. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance notes that port 443 can be specified if needed.
- In the Wowza target’s Advanced settings, verify SSL Encryption is set to True.
The Wowza target is not active
- Confirm Stream Targets is enabled for the live application.
- Check that the incoming source is active and the configured source stream name is correct.
- Review the destination fields against the exact URL and key from YouTube; field mapping is version-dependent.
YouTube preview is missing or unhealthy
- Recheck the stream key and RTMPS URL in Live Control Room.
- Verify the encoder codec, bitrate, keyframe interval and audio settings against YouTube’s recommendations.
- Check both the encoder-to-Wowza path and Wowza-to-YouTube outbound bandwidth; test with representative motion and audio.
The stream key may have been exposed
Reset the key in YouTube Live Control Room and update the Wowza target with the replacement. Do not reuse a compromised key.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing uploaded videos rather than relaying a live camera or encoder feed, StreamNeo is a simpler cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. You can stream at the quality you uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required.
