How to Schedule a Compute Engine VM to Start and Stop a YouTube 24/7 Stream

A Compute Engine schedule starts and stops the VM—not the YouTube broadcast. Here’s how to configure both systems, allow for delays, and troubleshoot failures.

You can schedule a Google Compute Engine VM with a regional instance schedule policy, but that policy controls only the VM’s start and stop times. It does not start the encoder, confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed, or necessarily take a scheduled YouTube broadcast live. Set up both sides, allow time for startup and preview, and monitor them separately.

What the schedule does—and what it does not

A Compute Engine instance schedule is a recurring policy attached to a VM. It can start and stop that VM on a schedule, but the encoder running on the VM and YouTube’s Live Control Room have their own states and controls. A VM that has started is not proof that the encoder is running or that a broadcast is live.

For a stream that must remain continuously available, a daily stop schedule will interrupt it. Use start and stop schedules only when you intentionally want the stream and VM to be off for part of the day, or when you are coordinating a defined broadcast window. A schedule is an automation mechanism, not an end-to-end availability guarantee.

Choose the scheduling approach

Approach Best suited to How it works Trade-off
Compute Engine instance schedule policy Recurring start and stop times for specific VMs Create a regional policy with recurring schedules and attach it to each VM. Direct and purpose-built for attached instances; each VM can have only one instance schedule.
Cloud Scheduler with Pub/Sub and Cloud Functions More customized orchestration, such as selecting groups of VMs by labels or coordinating other resources A scheduled job triggers logic that performs the VM operations. More components and setup. Google Cloud described this pattern in a June 6, 2019 blog post; check current service documentation before deploying it.

For a straightforward recurring schedule on one or more known VMs, use the native instance schedule policy. The older orchestration pattern is worth considering only when its extra flexibility is needed.

Before you configure the schedule

  • Confirm the VM’s region. The schedule policy is regional and must be in the same region as the VM.
  • Check the disk configuration. Google advises against using an instance schedule to stop a VM with Local SSD disks. Check the current Compute Engine documentation for other instance-specific restrictions before rollout.
  • Choose a time zone deliberately. If you omit a time zone when configuring the schedule through gcloud or the API, the documented default is UTC. UTC avoids seasonal clock changes if fixed UTC timing suits your operation. In a daylight-saving-time zone, skipped or repeated local times can affect when a scheduled operation occurs.
  • Plan the encoder’s startup behavior. Decide how the encoder process will start when the VM boots and how it will behave when YouTube disconnects. The instance schedule itself does not configure that process.
  • Allow a startup buffer. Google says a scheduled operation can begin up to 15 minutes after its nominal time and recommends scheduling 15 minutes early when timing matters. VM boot and encoder startup add time that depends on your image and configuration.

Create and attach a Compute Engine instance schedule

  1. Grant the required permissions. The Compute Engine service agent needs the Compute Instance Admin (v1) role, or equivalent permissions that include compute.instances.start and compute.instances.stop. The user or service account managing schedules also needs the appropriate schedule-management permissions. Do not remove the service agent’s permissions: Google warns that doing so can silently disrupt schedules.
  2. Create the schedule in the VM’s region. In the Google Cloud console, open the Compute Engine instance-schedule workflow, create a schedule policy in the VM’s region, and set the recurring start and stop times. The gcloud CLI and Compute Engine API are also supported; their schedule definitions use cron expressions.
  3. Set the time zone and recurrence. Select the intended time zone rather than relying on the UTC default when using gcloud or the API. Check the recurrence against the actual operating calendar, including daylight-saving transitions where applicable.
  4. Keep operations far enough apart. Google warns that start and stop events less than 15 minutes apart can fail. Leave at least that interval between them, and allow additional time for the VM and encoder to start or shut down.
  5. Attach the policy to the VM. A policy does nothing to a VM until attached. A VM can follow only one instance schedule, while one schedule can be attached to as many as 1,000 VMs.
  6. Validate the first scheduled run. Check the VM’s state and the Cloud Audit Logs for the scheduled operation. Confirm that the encoder process starts as expected; do not treat a successful VM start as confirmation that YouTube is live.

Compute Engine cannot guarantee that a scheduled VM will start if the resources it needs are unavailable. For a broadcast with a fixed public start time, schedule early enough to cover the documented operation delay, VM boot, encoder startup, YouTube preview, and any recovery time. The extra boot and recovery buffer is configuration-dependent rather than a fixed value established by Google’s scheduling guidance.

Configure YouTube and the encoder separately

  1. Create or select the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Choose the appropriate YouTube live stream and its scheduled event settings. A scheduled stream may require you to preview the incoming feed in Live Control Room and select Go live; starting the VM alone does not perform that action.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder. The stream key is credential-like information that directs the encoder’s feed to the correct YouTube destination. Keep it private. If you reset the key, update the encoder configuration to match.
  3. Set the encoder’s output to match the source and YouTube’s current guidance. Choose the stream settings shown for your format in YouTube’s live setup, and make sure the encoder is configured to send to the selected YouTube stream. The sources cited here do not establish one bitrate, resolution, or keyframe interval suitable for every source and account, so do not copy arbitrary values from another stream.
  4. Start the encoder before the intended public start. YouTube recommends starting encoders at least 15 minutes before an event, checking the preview, and monitoring stream health. The VM schedule’s possible delay is separate from this YouTube preparation time.
  5. Decide how YouTube auto-start and auto-stop should work. YouTube provides auto-start and auto-stop options that let the encoder control stream start and stop behavior. These settings are separate from the Compute Engine policy. Confirm the intended behavior in Live Control Room rather than assuming the VM’s start or stop will produce the desired broadcast state.

For a recurring pre-recorded program, make sure the encoder’s playback or playlist behavior is configured independently of the VM schedule. A restart of the VM or encoder can affect playback position and continuity; validate that behavior with your own setup before relying on it for a timed program.

Timing and continuity for a 24/7 channel

  • Do not schedule a stop if the feed must be continuous. A stop operation ends the VM’s work and can cut off its encoder feed. If you need an around-the-clock stream, plan for a continuously running VM or another operating model rather than a daily shutdown.
  • Budget for two systems. Compute Engine’s schedule governs the VM; YouTube’s stream controls govern the broadcast. Allow time for both to become ready and verify each separately.
  • Plan recovery beyond the schedule. A start policy is not a failover system. Monitor the encoder and YouTube stream health, and decide how the encoder will resume sending if the connection or broadcast is interrupted.
  • Do not assume a 24/7 stream will be archived automatically. YouTube’s cited help guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement does not establish automatic archiving for a 24-hour stream. Make a separate recording and archive plan if preserving the full program matters.
  • Check content rights and channel eligibility. A schedule does not change YouTube’s copyright rules or Live streaming requirements. Use material you have the rights to broadcast, and check YouTube’s current policies for reused content and live-stream eligibility before publishing.

Troubleshoot a scheduled YouTube stream

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
The VM did not start at the listed time Scheduled operations can start up to 15 minutes late; required resources may also be unavailable. Allow the documented delay, inspect the VM state and Cloud Audit Logs, and verify the schedule is attached and in the VM’s region.
The schedule exists but does not operate on the VM The policy may not be attached, or the service agent may lack start/stop permissions. Confirm the attachment and region, then verify the Compute Engine service agent has the required role or equivalent permissions. Review audit logs for permission errors.
The VM is running but YouTube shows no incoming feed The encoder may not have started, may be misconfigured, or may be sending to the wrong URL or key. Check the encoder process and its output configuration, verify the YouTube stream URL and key, and inspect Live Control Room’s preview and stream health.
The preview is visible but the scheduled broadcast is not public The YouTube event may still require a Live Control Room action, or its auto-start behavior may not match the encoder settings. Check the event’s current status and follow the applicable preview and Go live steps; verify YouTube auto-start settings separately from the VM policy.
A start or stop operation fails when events are close together Google warns that start and stop events less than 15 minutes apart can fail. Increase the interval and account for the schedule’s possible delay and the VM’s startup or shutdown time.
The stream stops when the VM is scheduled to stop The VM’s encoder feed has been interrupted by the stop operation. Remove or change the stop schedule if continuous operation is required; do not use the VM stop as a stream-management substitute.
The stream fails after a stream key change The encoder may still be using the old key. Update the encoder with the current key and protect the new key as a credential.

Cost and operational notes

This setup uses Google Cloud resources, but the cited materials do not establish current prices for VM compute, disks, IP addresses, network egress, or free-tier eligibility. Check the current Google Cloud pricing pages for your region and configuration before estimating cost. A VM schedule can reduce the time a VM runs when downtime is acceptable; it does not remove charges that may apply to other resources, and a shutdown is incompatible with a continuously running feed.

For scheduled-operation validation, use Cloud Audit Logs. For the YouTube side, use Live Control Room’s stream status and health information. They answer different questions: whether the cloud operation ran, and whether YouTube is receiving the broadcast properly.
