To run different prerecorded loops at the same time, create a separate YouTube live stream for each feed and run a separately configured FFmpeg process for each one on the VPS. Size the server for the combined outbound bitrate and encoding workload; there is no universal number of streams a VPS can handle. This guide shows how to plan, configure, test, and monitor the setup.
How YouTube treats simultaneous live streams
YouTube distinguishes a broadcast, the viewer-facing live event, from a stream, the incoming audio-video feed. A broadcast is bound to a stream. Google’s API documentation describes using distinct streams for broadcasts that may run simultaneously with different settings: YouTube Live Streaming API: Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.
- Different loops at once: create a distinct stream for each show, then direct each encoder process to its matching ingest configuration.
- Recurring events at different times: a reusable stream can be associated with broadcasts that do not overlap.
- The same feed in concurrent broadcasts: YouTube documents binding one incoming stream to multiple simultaneous broadcasts when they intentionally carry the same content. This does not create separate loops.
For independent loops, use a separate FFmpeg process per feed, with its own media input, settings, destination, and logs. This is a practical arrangement for keeping inputs and outputs isolated; YouTube’s documentation defines the broadcast and stream relationships, not a required server process layout.
Plan the VPS before adding feeds
Estimate resources from the actual streams you intend to send, rather than from a fixed “streams per VPS” claim. OVHcloud’s plan page lists vCPU, RAM, NVMe storage, public bandwidth, and traffic terms; configurations are market-specific and can change, so check the current listing for your region: OVHcloud VPS.

Calculate aggregate outbound bitrate
Add the configured bitrate for every concurrent feed, including audio, then leave practical headroom for protocol overhead and variation. YouTube’s encoder guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its H.264 recommendations for 1080p are 10 Mbps at 30 fps and 17 Mbps at 60 fps; listed minimums are 4 Mbps and 6 Mbps, respectively. For AV1/H.265 at 1080p, recommendations are 8 Mbps at 30 fps and 12 Mbps at 60 fps, with minimums of 3 Mbps and 4 Mbps. Use the row matching your chosen codec and frame rate, and confirm current guidance at YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
For a rough egress estimate, multiply the sum of the stream bitrates by the hours streamed, then convert bits to bytes (divide by eight). The result is an estimate before protocol overhead and any differences between configured and actual traffic. Compare it with the plan’s published public-bandwidth and traffic terms.

Account for encoding, memory, and media storage
- CPU: copying a compatible pre-encoded feed generally requires less compute than encoding every frame. Transcoding multiple feeds increases the workload; actual demand depends on input formats and encoder settings. Do not assume a stream count without measuring on the selected plan.
- RAM: allow for the operating system and all concurrent FFmpeg processes.
- Storage: include the loop files and any retained logs. NVMe capacity varies by plan.
- Operations: separate service units, restart behavior, logs, and health checks help identify which feed has failed. A process supervisor can restart a crashed encoder, but cannot prevent network, provider, source-file, or YouTube-side interruptions.
Create one YouTube feed per loop
- Create the live events and streams in YouTube Studio. Set up each distinct broadcast and its corresponding stream, then note the ingest configuration for each feed. Check the current Live Control Room messages and account-specific live-stream requirements; the API and encoder references do not establish a universal simultaneous-stream allowance for every account.
- Match inputs to destinations. Make a simple mapping such as
documentary-a.mp4 → broadcast A → stream Aanddocumentary-b.mp4 → broadcast B → stream B. Confirm each process uses the intended input and distinct intended ingest target. - Protect stream keys. Treat keys as credentials. Avoid putting live keys in public scripts, shared files, or logs, and take care with shell history. Prefer a restricted environment file or service configuration with access limited to the account running FFmpeg.
- Choose stream settings. Select codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval using YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the Live Control Room health feedback. Avoid copying a setting from another stream without checking that it matches this video’s format and the VPS capacity.
Run a separate FFmpeg process for each loop
The following command is illustrative, not a tested command or a universal bitrate recommendation. Replace the paths, settings, ingest address, and key for the installed FFmpeg build and media. Keep the key private.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/loops/stream-a.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 2500k
-c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/$STREAM_KEY"
-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely.-repaces file input in real time rather than sending it as fast as the server can read it.-c:v libx264and-c:a aacencode video and audio. Re-encoding can provide control and compatibility, but uses CPU. The example’s bitrate is not a general recommendation.-f flvsets the output container commonly used for RTMP delivery. Confirm the ingest protocol and address shown for your stream.
Start a second process with its own input, settings, and matching YouTube destination for the next loop. Do not point both independent loops at the same key by accident. For unattended operation, run each feed as a separately supervised service and keep per-feed logs so a failure in one does not obscure another. Exact service-manager configuration depends on the Linux distribution and deployment choices.

Test and monitor before leaving it unattended
- Test every feed with representative motion and sound, not just a static opening frame.
- Watch each event in YouTube Live Control Room and review its stream-health messages. A running FFmpeg process does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- Inspect each FFmpeg log for input-read, encoder, and network errors.
- Check VPS CPU use while all intended transcodes are active, and compare total configured bitrate with actual egress and the plan’s published network terms.
- Let the loops run long enough to check audio, file permissions, and behavior at the loop boundary.
YouTube’s LiveStreams health reference includes issues such as unsupported codecs, low or high bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, missing or multiple audio/video streams, and video-ingestion starvation. It identifies H.264 as a supported video codec and AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs. Use its health feedback to diagnose the specific stream: LiveStreams API reference.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Check | Likely next step |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong loop appears on a broadcast | Compare the process input, broadcast, ingest target, and key in your feed mapping. | Correct the mapping and restart only the affected process. |
| YouTube reports low or high bitrate | Check the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, configured audio/video bitrates, and YouTube health message. | Adjust settings against YouTube’s guidance for the actual format, then retest. |
| Unsupported codec or media configuration warning | Review the input and encoder output formats, including whether audio and video tracks are present as expected. | Use a supported configuration; YouTube identifies H.264 video and AAC or MP3 audio as supported. |
| Ingestion starvation or late frames | Check network errors, VPS egress, and CPU saturation, especially when several feeds are being transcoded. | Reduce the workload or bitrate as appropriate, or move to a plan with resources suited to the measured load. |
| FFmpeg exits or cannot read a loop file | Inspect the per-feed log, file path, permissions, and available disk space. | Fix the input or permissions and configure the service supervisor to restart the process; verify the stream recovers at YouTube too. |
| Loop plays but sound or boundary is wrong | Listen through a full cycle and inspect the source file’s audio and edit points. | Correct or replace the media, then repeat the longer trial before unattended use. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not administer FFmpeg processes and services, StreamNeo is a managed option for looping uploaded videos to YouTube. The workflow is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Check whether the current offer fits your intended number of feeds before choosing a plan.
