You can send video from a Raspberry Pi running Bookworm to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, but the exact command depends on whether your source is a Pi camera, USB camera, file, or network stream—and on which encoders your Pi and FFmpeg build support. The signal path is source capture or input, stream selection and any needed encoding, FLV muxing, then delivery to YouTube over RTMPS. Use the current ingest details shown in YouTube Live Control Room, keep the stream key private, and test the complete setup before relying on it.

Choose the right input and processing path

First identify the source and Raspberry Pi model. A Pi camera uses Raspberry Pi’s camera tools; a USB camera commonly appears as a Video4Linux2 (V4L2) device; a video file or network stream can be read by FFmpeg directly. These inputs do not share one universal command or encoding path.

Source Typical starting point What to verify
Pi camera Capture with Bookworm’s rpicam-vid, or use its documented libav integration where appropriate. Camera detection, capture format, installed backend and the Pi model’s encoder support.
USB camera Read the camera through the installed FFmpeg build’s V4L2 input support. Device path, supported pixel formats, resolution, frame rate, and whether audio comes from a separate device.
Video file Read the file with FFmpeg and stream it in real time. Whether its video and audio codecs suit YouTube and whether they can be passed through or need conversion.
Network stream Use FFmpeg’s input support for the actual source protocol. Input URL, authentication, reconnect behavior, timestamps, and compatibility of the incoming codecs.

When the source is already compatible, copying its streams may avoid a costly encode; when it is not, FFmpeg must encode or otherwise transform it. The correct decision depends on the input codecs, the installed FFmpeg build, and available Pi resources. Raspberry Pi documents rpicam-vid as the camera capture application and notes that its libav backend uses hardware H.264 encoding when available. The exact availability is model- and software-dependent. See the Raspberry Pi camera software documentation.

Check Bookworm tools and capabilities

On Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm, Raspberry Pi camera applications use the rpicam-* names. Older instructions built around raspivid may not apply; check what is installed rather than assuming a legacy command exists.

FFmpeg’s options depend on its build and the source. In its command line, input-specific options belong before the corresponding -i; output options belong after the inputs they affect. The Debian Bookworm FFmpeg manual describes command-line behavior, but it does not guarantee that every Raspberry Pi OS image exposes identical codecs or device support.

Set YouTube’s output profile before building the command

YouTube’s current encoder guidance accepts RTMP or RTMPS and recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and frame rates up to 60 fps. These are YouTube’s published service specifications, not a promise that your Pi or installed FFmpeg build can encode every listed format in real time. For the current requirements, see YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

  • Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Choose a bitrate appropriate to your resolution and available upload capacity using YouTube’s current table; do not guess from a generic preset.
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Frame rate: Stay within the content and hardware capability; YouTube lists support up to 60 fps.
  • Audio: YouTube recommends AAC or MP3. For stereo it recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps.
  • Picture characteristics: YouTube’s advanced guidance recommends square pixels and progressive scan.

These settings must also be achievable by the chosen input and encoder. In particular, an encoder option accepted by one FFmpeg build may be unavailable or named differently on another.

Capture from a Pi camera with Bookworm

Use rpicam-vid for Pi-camera capture rather than copying an old raspivid recipe. Raspberry Pi documents several output paths, including encoded H.264 capture and libav integration. Which is appropriate depends on whether you need FFmpeg to process the video, which codecs are available, and whether the device supports the required hardware path.

Before wiring capture to a live output, inspect rpicam-vid --help and the Raspberry Pi camera documentation for the installed version’s options. Confirm the camera works on its own, select a supported resolution and frame rate, and establish how audio will enter the pipeline. A Pi camera provides video; if the production needs sound, connect and configure an audio source separately.

Do not paste a guessed pipe command into a public stream as if it were universal. The capture format, output mode, FFmpeg input declaration, encoder, audio mapping, and muxer have to agree. Raspberry Pi’s documentation distinguishes the camera application from the encoding and delivery work FFmpeg may perform: rpicam camera software.

Build the FFmpeg command for the actual source

There is no single reliable command for every Bookworm Pi, camera, audio source, and FFmpeg build. Build and validate the command in layers rather than treating a forum recipe as a universal setup.

  1. Prove the input works. Capture a short local sample or inspect the file/network input first. For V4L2, identify the device and modes available on your system. For a Pi camera, verify capture with rpicam-vid.

  2. Map the intended streams. Decide which video and audio inputs should reach YouTube. Use FFmpeg stream mapping deliberately, especially when video and audio come from separate devices.

  3. Choose copy or encode. Copy compatible streams to reduce CPU load; encode only when the source is incompatible or needs resizing, frame-rate conversion, or another transformation. Check encoder availability locally.

  4. Apply output settings. Select a YouTube-supported video/audio format, CBR target, frame rate, and two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds), based on YouTube’s current guidance and your input.

For a file, make sure FFmpeg sends it in real time rather than transmitting the file as fast as it can be read. For a camera or live network input, account for capture timing and buffering. Use the installed FFmpeg help and encoder listings to confirm every option before deploying it.

Protect the stream key and test privately

Create or select the live stream in YouTube Live Control Room and use the active ingest settings shown there. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it in a script, screenshot, forum post, or shared log. If a key is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s controls.

  1. Start with a private or unlisted test broadcast, as appropriate for your channel and event.

  2. Check the YouTube preview for both video and audio. Confirm that the intended source is mapped, movement is smooth, and sound is present at the expected level.

    • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
    • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  3. Review YouTube’s stream-health feedback and messages. Correct warnings before making the broadcast public.

  4. Test representative motion and audio for long enough to reveal load or network problems, then monitor stream health during the event.

YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring its stream-health messages. Measure available upload capacity and leave headroom above the configured bitrate; a speed test alone does not establish that a connection will remain stable throughout a broadcast.

Account for Raspberry Pi model and workload

Encoding load depends on resolution, frame rate, filters, audio handling, and encoder choice as well as the Pi model. Earlier Raspberry Pi models may have a hardware H.264 path, but availability depends on the device and software. Do not assume that a Pi 5 uses the same hardware encode path: Raspberry Pi documents software video encoders on Pi 5.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Raspberry Pi documents a --low-latency option for Pi 5’s software encoding that changes encoder behavior to emit frames sooner. The tradeoffs include slightly reduced coding efficiency, potentially lower maximum frame rate, and less efficient multicore use. Raspberry Pi says Pi 5 still easily achieves 1080p30, but that is a vendor statement—not an independent test of this YouTube workflow. Use the option only when lower latency matters and validate the result on your own source and stream.

If encoding cannot keep up, reduce resolution or frame rate, remove expensive filters, or investigate a hardware-supported H.264 path if the specific Pi and build expose one. Test the actual scene: a static view can conceal problems that appear with movement.

Troubleshoot by layer

  • YouTube preview stays blank: Check capture first, then FFmpeg input selection and stream mapping, then output codec/container settings, and finally the ingest endpoint and key. Logs and the preview are needed to distinguish these causes.
  • FFmpeg rejects an option or encoder: Check ffmpeg -h and ffmpeg -encoders on that Pi. Options from another build or an older forum post may not exist in the installed version.
  • Video stutters or encoding falls behind: Reduce resolution or frame rate, avoid costly filters, and verify whether the chosen encoder is supported by the device. On Pi 5, account for software encoding; test low-latency behavior only if latency is a priority.
  • Stream starts but buffers or drops: Compare measured upload capacity with configured bitrate, use a more reliable network connection where possible, and check YouTube’s stream-health messages. Test representative content before the event.
  • Video works but audio is missing: Verify that the audio device is available, mapped into the output, and encoded in a format YouTube accepts. A Pi camera capture by itself does not supply a separate microphone feed.
  • Old instructions do not work: Check for Bookworm’s rpicam-* tools and current local encoder support rather than assuming legacy raspivid commands or flags apply.

Optional camera hardware

The Raspberry Pi Camera Module 3 is one possible input for a camera-based build, but it is not required for streaming a file, USB camera, or network source. Before buying any camera, confirm compatibility with your exact Pi model, cable arrangement, case, and local availability. The Raspberry Pi camera documentation covers supported camera software and setup: camera documentation.

Or let it run in the cloud
