To keep an FFmpeg stream live during a scheduled power cut, back up the entire chain that carries it: the Raspberry Pi, any camera or capture equipment, the modem or fibre ONT, router, and required switches. Then test that complete setup on battery for the longest outage you need to cover. A powered Pi cannot publish if its internet path loses power or connectivity, and no single UPS capacity can be recommended without measuring your actual load and runtime needs.

What needs to keep working

A YouTube stream depends on more than the Raspberry Pi. Map every device between the video source and the internet, then check which ones need local power and whether the internet service itself remains available during a power cut.

  • Video source: camera, capture device, or video file on the Pi. Include any separately powered camera or capture hardware.
  • Encoder and publisher: the Pi running FFmpeg and its boot medium.
  • Local network: router, modem or fibre ONT, and any switch or PoE equipment required for the route to the internet.
  • Internet service: local backup power does not guarantee that the ISP or building-level equipment will remain online.

Check current outage notices from your local distribution company (DISCOM). “Scheduled power cuts” does not specify a location or duration; plan for the longest credible interruption in your area, plus reserve, rather than relying on a national schedule. If you are considering mobile tethering as a fallback, test coverage, data allowance, upload stability, and latency at the installation site.

Prepare the Pi and check FFmpeg

Confirm the board, operating system, and source

Identify the exact Raspberry Pi model and operating system, and decide whether FFmpeg will encode the source or copy an already compatible stream. The right input options and encoding load depend on the source and hardware; there is no universal camera command. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation covers initial setup and connectivity.

Verify the local FFmpeg build

Install or build FFmpeg with support for your input device and the required streaming protocol. Check the installed build’s available protocols and encoders:

ffmpeg -protocols

ffmpeg -encoders

The FFmpeg protocol documentation explains RTMP URL syntax and publishing, but a particular packaged build may not include every required capability. Confirm that your build supports the endpoint and encoder you intend to use.

Create the YouTube stream and protect its key

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the live stream.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the RTMPS endpoint when your FFmpeg build supports it.
  3. Keep the key private. Avoid placing a real key in a public script, screenshot, or shell history. Store it in a protected configuration or environment file, or a suitably permissioned service configuration.
  4. Use the endpoint and key in the format supported by your FFmpeg build, then confirm that YouTube receives the stream and reports healthy ingest before relying on it.

YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and recommends it. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance for the Live Control Room endpoint and key steps. Its advice to try port 443 applies to certain SSL errors and only where the endpoint or configuration calls for it; do not change ports speculatively.

Choose a resolution and bitrate your setup can sustain

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports H.264, H.265, and AV1, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval with four seconds as the maximum. H.264 is a documented option, but that does not mean every Pi can encode every resolution and frame rate smoothly. Test the actual board and source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
H.264 stream setting YouTube recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

These figures are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a promise that your connection can sustain them. YouTube advises choosing quality based on the connection and testing upload bitrate. Measure the actual connection from the streaming location under realistic conditions, leave headroom for variation, and lower the target if the upload is unstable. The current settings and testing advice are in YouTube’s live encoder guidance.

Set the GOP length to roughly two seconds at your chosen frame rate: for example, -g 50 at 25 fps or -g 60 at 30 fps. Ensure the encoder’s frame rate and resolution match the source and stay within what the Pi can sustain. Hardware H.264 encoding may reduce CPU use if the board, FFmpeg build, and input workflow support it; verify locally and test rather than assuming.

Example command for looping a video file

This illustrative command replays a file in real time and sends H.264 video with AAC audio. Replace the input, frame rate, resolution, bitrate, and endpoint details to match your source, tested upload, and YouTube stream. It is not a universal Raspberry Pi command.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune zerolatency -b:v 2500k -maxrate 2500k -bufsize 5000k -g 50 -keyint_min 50 -sc_threshold 0 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "$YOUTUBE_URL/$YOUTUBE_KEY"

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • -re reads a file at real-time speed; it is appropriate for file replay, not generally needed for an already-real-time camera source.
  • -stream_loop -1 loops the input indefinitely. Remove it if you do not want looping.
  • The example’s 2,500 kbps video target is illustrative, not a YouTube recommendation for a particular resolution. Set bitrate for your chosen output and measured connection.
  • At 25 fps, -g 50 and -keyint_min 50 represent a two-second interval. At 30 fps, use 60 for both.
  • For a camera or capture device, replace the file input with the correct device input and options; remove file-looping options and validate audio and video synchronization.

Check that the final URL syntax matches your installed FFmpeg build and the endpoint YouTube provides. Do not paste the placeholder variable names as credentials.

Back up power for the full path

Match the supply to the Pi model

Raspberry Pi’s current documentation recommends these supply ratings: 5 V at 5 A for Raspberry Pi 5 and Pi 500; 5 V at 3 A for Pi 4 Model B and Pi 400; and 5 V at 2.5 A for the listed Pi 1, 2, 3, and Zero models. These are supply recommendations, not measurements of FFmpeg’s power draw or estimates of stream runtime. Raspberry Pi says, “We recommend using an official Raspberry Pi power supply suitable for the Raspberry Pi model you’re powering.” Its voltage requirement is measured at the plug; allow for cable voltage loss, particularly with removable cables. See the Raspberry Pi power guidance.

Choose a backup approach from your load list

A Pi-focused 5 V UPS or HAT may suit a Pi-only load if its output, connectors, and model compatibility are adequate. A conventional AC UPS may be more convenient if it must also power the router, ONT, and several adapters. These are categories, not endorsements of specific products. Compare the options against the whole setup:

  • Supported Pi model and regulated output voltage and current.
  • Which networking and capture devices can connect, and their combined draw.
  • Usable battery energy at the actual load and the runtime measured in a full-system test.
  • Switchover behavior: a transfer interruption may drop the stream even if the Pi stays on.
  • Shutdown or status signaling compatibility, temperature limits, recharge time, and battery replacement terms.

First measure the complete system’s draw and define the required runtime; then verify the UPS’s usable capacity under that load. A board’s supply rating is not its measured consumption, and battery capacity alone does not establish how long your setup will run. Do not assume that an unverified UPS can shut down the Pi safely when its battery is nearly depleted.

Test the stream and recovery before an outage

  1. Start with an unlisted or private test stream, or another safe test arrangement, and confirm that YouTube receives it.
  2. Test the actual video and audio source at the intended resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
  3. During a sustained run, monitor FFmpeg logs, CPU temperature and throttling, dropped frames, upload stability, and YouTube stream health.
  4. Disconnect or interrupt the network in a controlled test. Check whether FFmpeg reconnects and whether the YouTube event returns to a live state; reconnection may not automatically restore the same event.
  5. Test a power transfer under load, the runtime on battery, and a clean shutdown while reserve remains. After power returns, confirm boot, service startup, and whether you must restart the YouTube event manually.

YouTube’s encoder page says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” No general claim about a Pi’s achievable frame rate or a UPS runtime can replace a sustained test of your particular source, board, network, and backup system.

Run FFmpeg as a supervised service

Once the manual command works reliably, run it under a service manager configured to start at boot and restart after a transient failure. Avoid rapid restart loops; keep logs bounded and protect the key in the service configuration. Test service startup after power returns and recovery after a network interruption before depending on unattended operation.

If battery reserve is running out, stop the stream and shut down cleanly rather than waiting for an abrupt cutoff. Raspberry Pi documents sudo poweroff as the command-line shutdown action. Do not assume automated UPS shutdown works until you have tested the signaling and shutdown behavior with your selected hardware.

Or let it run in the cloud
