You can run a prerecorded video to YouTube from FFmpeg inside a Docker container, but the container is only the host for the encoder: YouTube Live Control Room still provides the ingest URL and stream key, and you must check that YouTube receives the feed. The steps below show a self-managed setup and its limits. No single FFmpeg command or Docker setting guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast.
How the Docker and FFmpeg setup works
Docker packages and runs a process; it does not make a broadcast continuous by itself. FFmpeg reads your media, optionally transforms it, and sends a live feed to YouTube. YouTube provides the ingest details in Live Control Room and shows whether the feed has arrived. The host can be a computer you already have or a remote host, but it must remain available while the container is running.
This walkthrough uses a generic FFmpeg-enabled container image called your-ffmpeg-image. It is a placeholder for an image you build or otherwise select; it is not a tested image recommendation. The source material here does not establish a universal Dockerfile, Compose configuration, host specification, or restart policy.
Prepare your channel and source video
Check that the channel can livestream
YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified, must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16 years old. Check eligibility before building the container workflow. (YouTube Help, “Get started with live streaming.”)

Create the live stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room. Create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Open the stream’s settings and copy the server URL and stream key. Use the RTMPS server URL shown there when available; do not substitute a guessed ingest address.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put it in a public repository, screenshot, shared Dockerfile, or article. If it is exposed, reset it in stream settings and update the encoder. (YouTube Help, “Manage live stream settings.”)
YouTube’s encoder workflow is to connect with the server URL and key, start the encoder, and check the incoming preview. With a scheduled stream, wait for the preview and use Go live when the stream settings require that step. Auto-start and auto-stop behavior depends on the stream settings. (YouTube Help, “Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder” and “Manage live stream settings.”)
Check the media before sending it
- Confirm the file is readable and has the audio and video you intend viewers to receive. A file that ends will not automatically become an endless programme unless your FFmpeg input or playlist workflow is designed to continue.
- Decide whether FFmpeg can copy the existing audio and video streams or must re-encode them. Copying avoids a transformation, but is appropriate only when the source streams and output are compatible with the ingest workflow. Re-encoding requires suitable choices for the media and destination.
- Do not rely on a generic bitrate, resolution, codec, or keyframe recipe here: the current YouTube encoder settings table was not established in the sources used for this article. Consult YouTube’s current guidance for your chosen output and confirm the result in Live Control Room.
- Make sure you have the rights to stream every video, music track, image, and other element. A loop does not make copyrighted material safe to broadcast. Repeated or reused material may also raise separate monetization concerns; livestream eligibility and monetization review are not the same thing.
Use FFmpeg to send the feed to YouTube
FFmpeg documents real-time input pacing with -re and RTMP output through the FLV muxer. YouTube supports RTMPS, which is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL; choose the RTMPS URL displayed in Live Control Room when your FFmpeg build supports it. (FFmpeg, “FFmpeg Protocols Documentation”; YouTube Help, “Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.”)

For a file input and stream-copy workflow, the documented pattern is:
ffmpeg -re -i /media/program.mp4 -c copy -f flv "$YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL"
YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL must resolve to the ingest address formed from the server URL and stream key according to the details YouTube gives you. The example uses a placeholder environment variable, not a real key. If stream-copy is unsuitable for your file, replace -c copy with encoding options appropriate to the media and current YouTube guidance; no universal values are specified here.

FFmpeg’s protocol documentation lists reconnect controls for certain TCP and TLS errors. Those options can help with particular connection failures, but they do not guarantee recovery from every interruption, restore every live event, or prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed. Add reconnect options only after checking the current FFmpeg documentation for your build and the failure you need to address.
Run FFmpeg inside Docker
First make an FFmpeg-enabled image available on the host. The following generic invocation assumes that the image contains FFmpeg and can run it with the supplied entrypoint; it is a starting point, not a tested deployment or a production-ready configuration.

YOUTUBE_INGEST_URLin the environment of the shell that launches Docker. Form it using the current server URL and stream key from Live Control Room; never paste a real key into a public script or repository. - Run the command, inspect the container’s FFmpeg output, and check Live Control Room for the incoming preview. The read-only mount lets FFmpeg read from the host directory without using the container to change the source file.
- When you stop the container, the encoder process stops. A new container run is not proof that the original YouTube event has resumed; check the preview and stream controls again.
Environment variables are a convenient placeholder for the example, not a complete secrets-management design: users with access to the host or container management may be able to inspect process configuration. Restrict access to the stream key, and remove or rotate it if exposed.

- Watch the encoder: inspect FFmpeg logs for input, output, and connection errors.
- Watch YouTube: confirm the incoming preview in Live Control Room, check audio and video quality, and verify playback from the watch page or channel page and on a mobile device.
- Keep an archive when preservation matters: YouTube’s live-stream tips recommend checking that a local archive file is growing and testing encoder failover. A local recording is a separate safeguard from YouTube’s archive.
- Test recovery deliberately: verify what happens after a network interruption or encoder exit, and monitor both the process and the YouTube preview. FFmpeg reconnect options address certain errors only; Docker restart behavior alone does not establish that the same live event will recover correctly.
These checks follow YouTube’s “YouTube live streaming tips.” The exact supervision and alerting design depends on the host and setup; no universal Docker restart policy or health check is established here.
Will YouTube save a 24/7 livestream?
Do not depend on a single stream that runs longer than 12 hours to produce a YouTube replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, while a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends making a local archive as a backup. (YouTube Help, “Archive live streams.”)
DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. (YouTube Help, “Turn on DVR on live streams.”)
If an on-platform replay matters, plan sessions comfortably shorter than 12 hours, with a deliberate stop-and-restart procedure, and record locally. Splitting a broadcast does not by itself guarantee particular viewer, notification, or replay behavior; verify the stream settings and resulting archive rather than assuming continuity across sessions.
Choose where to run the stream
- StreamNeo: the cloud keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running without a computer at home; any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps is streamed at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free. See StreamNeo.
- Your own computer or remote host: gives you control over the host and FFmpeg workflow, but you are responsible for keeping it available, monitoring the process and preview, and handling interruptions. An existing computer or remote host may be enough; no minimum CPU, memory, or network capacity is established for this prerecorded workload.
- Another managed service: YouTube’s encoder guidance lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos. Check its current capabilities and terms directly; no current pricing or service comparison is established here. (YouTube Help, “Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.”)
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want to avoid maintaining the Docker host, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping uploaded videos live on YouTube. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Its cloud runs the loop, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera.
